Seriously....I don't understand why the "journalists" are so quick to give them the rings...

......they do know the Celtics still have Doc Rivers as the coach right?....

It's not about giving them a ring. It's about contending for one.

The Celtics will contend.

Here, we are so far away that it is not even funny.

Once Kobe leaves, we will take another step back.

"Contention" is a word used very vaguely....

Was Cleveland even considered close to "contention" last season? They got into the Finals.....

.....if somebody had a gun to your head and asked you to pick 5 teams you felt were in "contention"...would you have said Cleveland?

Why is Garnett #5?

#21 is retired by the Celtics. Its Bill Sharman's number. Yes its the same Bill Sharman who led the Lakers to a 33 win streak and to the title.

The Celtics acquired Garnett, a 10-time All-Star and the NBA MVP in 2004, from Minnesota in exchange for Al Jefferson, Ryan Gomes, Gerald Green, Theo Ratliff, Sebastian Telfair, a 2009 first-round draft pick and a return of Minnesota's conditional first-round pick previously obtained in the Ricky Davis-Wally Szczerbiak trade.

By publicly demanding a trade or being fat, out of shape, and injury ridden for 4 years running?

The Celtics haven't won the tittle...

The games have to be played... Let's now see if those huge names can put it all together... They may not even be the best team in the east...

The Celts still have to deal with Bron Bron, the Pistons ofcourse, and possibly a different Knicks. They'll man handle Miami, and Indi, Chicago will still contend, and after three years together could be in the hunt...
The Celts may suddenly look invincible but, you never know what is going to happen... They could get a visit from the Lakers "mame and cripple demon" too...

Actually I think Chicago, with another year behind them to gell, get more experienced, and the maturation of Sefolosha/Thomas, will be even better. I expect Chicago to win the East next year. I think Detroit further fades. Cleveland should be about the same. I think, as of right now, it goes like this....

East - 1. Chicago 2. Boston 3. Detroit 4. Toronto 5. Cleveland 6. Miami 7. new Jersey 8. Orlando
West - 1. Phoenix 2. San Antonio 3. Dallas 4. Utah 5. Lakers 6. Houston 7. Denver 8. Golden State

As things stand now, I predict next year it will be San Antonio v. Chicago in the NBA Finals.

Boston has a two year window. I'd say three years, but the first year will be lost on Doc's ineptitude. The payroll will test management's patience, which means Doc will probably be shown the door.

The window is a joint-probability of health and age. As soon as one of the "Big 3" either gets injured or wears down to age, the window slams shut. There aren't any promising players in the wings.

Big ben will be respectable on KG, Boston has no one to defend all those quick guards. Pierce and Ray dont play defense, so thats going to be the big suprise come playoffs or finals. I think Boston has a great regular season, but who's going to guard LaBron come playoffs?

on paper Boston is top 4 in the east (not in order) with a healthy Miami not being counted out.

Detroit
Chicago
Cavs
Boston

He got an extension... so he is on contract for the next five seasons.

So the deal was Ratliff, Jefferson, Green, Gomes, Telfair, and 2 1st round picks. This would be the equivalent of the Lakers sending out Kwame, McKie (s/t), Bynum, Crittenton, Ronny, Sasha, Mo, and 2 1st round picks. Boston's deal is slightly better because it takes two less players to complete, offers a draft pick that is likely lower than anything we'd offer, and Jefferson and Green are more established (thus more valuable) than Bynum and Crittenton (regardless of the long-term potential).

However, if that deal would have went down for us, we would have had a 1st unit of Fisher/Kobe/Odom/Garnett/Mihm with a second unit of Farmar/Karl/Vlad/Cook/??. I'd take Kobe/Odom/KG over Pierce/Allen/KG.

Following your train of thought, I believe Boston will have the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 seasons as the years in which they could really win a title. My rationale is that it will take them two offseasons to properly round out their roster to have enough complimentary pieces to be a contender. It will also take at least one year and one year of playoffs and disappointment experience for the team to gell properly. I also think Rivers could botch it all up, but I would be surprised if he is fired at this point.... unless the Celtics don't make it to at least the Conference Finals this year. Second round and I think Doc is fired.

Finally, I see only two seasons of real contention, because after that players are getting too old and I think injuries will creep in too much. KG will be 34, Ray Allen will be 35, and Paul Pierce will be 32.

In 2008-2009 and 2009-2010, I am not sure who will be the real contenders, so who knows what chances they will have. They should be at least in the hunt though. However, for next season, no way do I think they win the title.
