Larry Legend was interviewed on Dan Patrick's show this morning and gave Kobe a lot of props. He acknowledged Kobe as the game's best player, but he went beyond that by saying (not a direct quote) "When I think about the fact that he (Kobe) has never won an MVP award, it makes me want to give back one of mine". He also said that he'd want the ball in Kobe's hands at the end of the game.

It's very impressive when one of the legends of the game can set aside his own allegiances to the proud Celtics franchise and share an honest opinion of a hated Laker. Big ups to Larry Bird!!!

Really must be flattering to read/hear something like that, in Kobe's shoes.

Now that's something you don't read every morning, a little Celtic love for a Laker.

I thought this was about Larry Bird giving Kobe a copy of "Mad Love" starring Drew Barrmore and Chris O'Donnell.

heard it. also said Coop was the guy he remembers because of defender.

Noted how they had a no layup rule and that reg season games were as/ if not more physical than post season games

it just shows you that the media is having too big of a role in the NBA today, there use to be fights everytime two teams clearly didnt like each other (not encouraging fighting ) and a hard foul was used to protect the paint, thats all.........now the NBA is too "image concious"

You could be waiting quite a while. Even after Game 4, Magic couldn't say how great Kobe played without adding that Kobe never made his teammates better before and he would have tried to do it all himself.

Guys like Jerry West and Larry Bird just flat out say how much they respect Kobe. Magic can't bring himself to do that.

and that is very frustrating, how Magic can't appreciate Kobe without adding back-handed compliments.

I'll love Magic til the day I die but for the life of me I don't understand why he seems cold towards Kobe. Maybe some stuff went down between the two of them at one point...?

As for Bird's comment, agree 100% about game recognizing game. Bird's always been his own man...I don't think he clings that much to the Celtic tradition that he wasn't a part of. I don't think things ended real well between Bird and the Celts.

Nice comments from Bird...thanks to the OP for posting them.

Maybe magic is downplaying Kobe's talent because he is a team owner on TV?????

On Dan Patrick today, after Bird said that Kobe never won an MVP made him feel like giving one of his back, he said, "That's how much respect I have for him."

Is it considered tampering when an owner talks about potential players in the press? I thought MJ got in trouble for talking about Kevin Durant in the press? What about what Jay-Z is doing with LeBron, basically wooing him?

Magic is...

1. A Shaq Jocker

2. Magic realizes Kobe could become #1 in Laker fandom...yes over the Magic Man.

Okay so let me see.

Someone give me the list of those who KNOWS KB has deserved the MVP and the praise of being the best the game has to offer.

Mjay said it himself
Bird now says it.
Magic has said it, then has taken it back because of his love affair with the big cactus.
mark jackson
most of kobe's current peers(non haters) have admitted to this.

what more can be said? you owe kobe 2 mvps already. not counting this seasons. that should be 3. its going to be hard for those media people to tell their kids they voted for someone else and had kobe at 4th place in mvp voting.
