From all that we have seen so far, the signing of Von Wafer is best. That does't mean anything though since we've only seen him play in summer league.

I think it's trading for Kwame, we traded for a need. He's bound to turn it around this season (fingers crossed).

1. Bynum: I like this kid's atitude and I think if he spends considerable time with Kobe and especially gets that training from Kareem who knows whats possible with him.

2. Wafer showed alot in the summer league. We'll see how that works out in reg season

3. Kwame. I think he will benefit being under Phil.

Getting Kwame for pretty cheap and dumping Chucky at the same time was nice.

Kwame has soooooo much potential. If he could live up to his talent, he'll be the first decent pf in a long time. I think he'll flourish in the triangle and help to solidify our defense. He also helps our tri work because he is so effective on the high post. Prove em wrong Kwame....we're counting on you!

It has to be Brown & Profit. Brown alone makes a drastic change to the team. His presence will have good effect on Odoms Kobe & Mihms games.

I'd have to go with the trade for Brown right now. I hoping within 2-3 years that I'll be seeing it was the drafting of bynum. But its not 2-3 years from now.

I expect the biggest boost right now to come from having Brown on the court getting real playing time, as well as the impact of having Odom playing at the 3 again.

The best trade was Caron for Brown however. Which means we are in a bleak situation because we traded a proven talent for a potential talent. That the best we could do. I hope kwame thrives as a laker

The consensus seems to be the Brown trade, and I agree. We traded redundant small talent for an extremely talented big whose upside is out of this world. It was really unlikely that we were going to be able to keep Caron around for the long-term, which is beside the fact that he didn't really fit well with what we were trying to accomplish.

If Bynum and Brown develop, the Lakers will be contending for a title untill Kobe retires. Granted, the development process is uncertain, and it's a few years off. But with a core of Kobe, Odom, Brown, and Bynum, this team looks really good 2 - 3 years down the line. I'm sure we can add (or develop talent already on the roster - Wafer?) a point/initiator in that timeframe that will balance the lineup and put us in an excellent position to be yearly contenders again.

That 2 - 3 years is what is bothering most of us. But that is how championship teams are built. It's always a process, just takes time. Even after the Shaq signing, it still took three years to find the right coach, to build the team, and for Kobe to develop to the point where we could win a title.

The answer is Kwame. LA had a BIG need and addressed it by getting rid of a redundant player and a defense-challenged point guard.

The best part? I don't have to see Chucky's whining face on TV anymore.

Thing is, NONE of these were a solid win-win, "Can't believe the lakers pulled off another kick-*** move AGAIN! kind o deal. All have risks galore:

1. Bynum
+: Great center size, surprising fundamentals, some tri skill, upside.
-: VERY young, long-term project.

2. Turiaf
+: Hardworking player, great size and strength, possible instant player.
-: Earliest return is 2006-07 season, IF AT ALL, no way to know.

3. Von Wafer
+: Surprise athleticism, good chemistry in SPL.
-: Mixed reports re attitude, highest level of competition WAS Pro League.

4. Smush
+: Long-armed, aggressive D; some pro experience.
-: Largely untested, unknown commodity.

5. Caron/ Chucky for Kwame/ Laron
+: Gets a starting 4 with possible upside, moves Odom to starting 3.
-: Depletes what little PG depth we had, requiring us to sign 2 PGs.

6. McKie
+: Big, veteran guard, role-player attitude, multi-skilled.
-: Older, a step slower, durability in question.

Lots of questions all around.

1) Kwame Brown trade, if he finally fulfills his potential.

if not...

1A) Drafting future potential in Andrew Bynum

That being said, these are "bright" spots in the Lakers' offseason based on "potential". They're not "bright" spots if management's plans don't pan out.

Hmm.. Here's my list of smart moves, not in this order...

1. Not overpay for AD
(may not be overpaying the first 2 years, but by year 3, yea, we'd be overpaying)
2. Piss off DA and let him sign elsewhere
(that's one headache we did not need, plus i bet he plays less games than Aaron Mckie)
3. Got something for Caron Butler.
(he may have been good this year, but he's not a star. and he's not good enough to make star money, which he'll probably want when his contract ends. rather get rid of him now while we can get something. if kwame turns out to be awesome, then all the more better)
4. Got rid of brian grant.
(he's gonna play hard in practice. consequently, he's gonna injure amare in practice causing him to miss 19 games)

Drafting Turiaf. He would have been a gem this year had he not had the heart ailment.
