It seems like in almost EVERY broadcast I see, they are always saying "we need more energy." People say that other teams always bring their best against the lakers... That may be true...
But... the biggest payroll in the league should be able to generate a hungry team that wants to stomp and crush EVERY opponent no matter how much the opponent TRIES to beat them.
I mean dang... Well, bring the dang energy then! Show that you want it!
If millions of dollars and a parade the previous year don't help you get motivated... what will?
Championship calibur team... talentwise.. yes. Mentally? I REALLY doubt it.
How much of it is the coach's inability to instill the mindset, and how much is on the players you guys think? _________________ Go Lakers!

Fat and happy. A bit longer in the tooth too. Can't always get it up with those spring chickens looking to get their clip on BSPN. |

Not even home court advantage is enough to motivate them. |

I know it is not a popular idea, but until Drew returns, I would actually start DJ at center next to Pau because he is our best swatter. The threat of a shot blocker is necessary because we have Fish in the starting lineup (and given the type of funneling defense we employ). At least with DJ out there, Fisher's man will think twice about taking him off the dribble to the hole.
DJ hustles for rebounds. DJ plays physical. DJ intimidates. Energy and intensity in the starting lineup problems both solved almost instantly. This also buys some rest for both LO and Pau for the stretch run. Plus this would give DJ some invaluable experience with the starters should our frontline suffers any other injuries. Do it Phil. |

there is just no way Phil would start DJ....
having Artest and Fisher on offense is already bad enough, don't wanna add Mbenga..... |

It doesn't matter who starts per se in this situation. I didn't say play DJ 40 minutes. I suggested starting him because of the premise of this thread. We don't play with energy or intensity. DJ brings that.
Pau, is tired from all the games he's played during the last 2-3 years. He should go back to being the PF and work on his 17 footer then focus on being the backup center. This move could afford him some rest from banging with centers. Come playoff time he could be somewhat refreshed.
LO goes back to the bench (a now familiar role) to help get those guys going. Let's face it - their play tonight and as of late has been less than impressive. This is magnified when the starters don't come out with energy.
Maybe I'm in left field on this one but Phil has to do something to get these guys going. DJ in the starting lineup isn't so bad. It's not like he will come in and demand 15 shots - Kobe and Pau will continue to do the heavy lifting offensively. |

no more Turiaf, Ariza, Vujacic...we don't have very many "energy" guys on this team. we need a guy like Varejao coming off the bench. _________________ KobeDunk wrote:

NO BENCH!
We can't expect our starter going nuts after they have to play a 40+ min game the day before. |

Actually the answer is sitting on our bench....Sasha....he's all energy...and when he's actually making his shot..the whole team seems to play better |

Yeah, "it aint' the playoffs" is a dangerous mental habit to get into,
but wearing your team out before it matters is dangerous too. |

I think their inability to set and stick to defined roles is more dangerous than their blase attitude, but the blase attitude has impacted their development of both offensive and defensive strategies. You would think that before the TOUGHEST part of the season, they would have shown against the dreck of the league that they can potentially mesh with each other offensively, display the ability to help/rotate on defense, how to get better looks than 3 after 3, how to feed the post, how to hit open shots. Even for a 20 gm stretch, only 1/4th of the season... Too much to ask for...
The 2001 squad may have had a lot of internal problems, but at least we knew for sure that they could potentially run Phil's offense even if they looked bleak all season. The 2010 team hasn't even shown that much, and we have different dynamics than we did the year before. I hope they were hiding their cards all year, but seeing Phil and Kobe pissed off w/ 7 gms left, I dunno. _________________ GOAT MAGIC REEL

It's kind of funny, going only so far back as the beginning of this road trip we had our team playing the best looking rotating D we'd seen all year. And I said it was because the team we played was simply awful on offense. Well, here we are, game 4 of the road trip and our great rotating D has returned back to it's former ugly self. We looked great against a team with big slower guards, but against speed we suck.
Our team faces an uphill battle against the influx of youth. Todays kids are coming into the league with far better training and experience, and are really superb athletes. They are quick, explosive, shoot lights out and they are making our team look old. |

I know... But they should ALL be "energy guys." I mean come on now. At this level, you should be able to bring it without relying on other players to help you get there.
The whole millionaire team should be hungry... vibrant... and ready to kick some major tail! _________________ Go Lakers!

Kobe finally stepped up last night and demanded a better effort from the team. He's a pretty low-key leader when it comes to criticizing his teammates (I guess past experiences have taught him it's better to keep quiet...) but last night was the first time in the past two years that he was visibly screaming and yelling at them during a time-out. Perhaps this will awaken the team once and for all. _________________ dEDGE - Lakers commentary |

I don't think the players energy has anything to do with a lack of motivation. There is something else going on here and if they don't wise up to that you can kiss the playoffs good bye. |

I don't think they have no heart. I think it is more about they simply miss their shot or can do (bleep)! |

They were without KG, and still took the east finalist to 7 games. |
