|
|
Everyone is whispering in Lamar Odom's ear, telling him to shoot the basketball more.
The latest words came from Lakers assistant coach Brian Shaw, who suggested Odom take between 14 and 16 shots per game.
Odom is averaging 11 shots per game. He said 31 shots are the most he has ever taken and that was when he played for the Miami Heat during the 2003-04 season.
Lakers coach Phil Jackson is not expecting Odom to shoot 31 times, but Jackson does want Odom to put the ball up more.
"That's just my coach telling me to go," Odom said. "... He's told me to make my own plays, as far as breaking the offense."
Jackson twice repeated what he wanted from Odom.
"We're encouraging him to take a more active, proactive role in this," Jackson said. "Not only active, but proactive."
Odom took 14 shots against the Hornets on Wednesday, making six and scoring 18 points to go along with 17 rebounds and six assists.
"He played a great game," Jackson said.

Kobe said after the Hornets game that he believes Odom will find himself one day and become consistent and a dangerous threat almost every night. I sure hope this is the case. The guy is still young and improving. We'd be stupid to trade him. He hasnt even lived up to his potential. Laker fans just have to be patient with Odom.
It seems Phil put a lot of expectations on Odom, who he wants to initialize the offense and now he wants him to shoot more. Hopefully Odom can fulfill all these expectations that Phil has for him. _________________ To win the title, Lakers will have to overcome the world. |

Here's my theory:
The problem with having Odom start the offense and setting up other people to score is that nobody other than Kobe can really score consistently. So, you have your "supposedly" #2 scoring option deferring to guys who are much less efficient scorers. The result is an offense that doesn't really play to it's strengths. Odom would be fine as the tri. initiator if we had guys who could put the ball in the basket consistently. You can't make Kobe the initiator because he is most effective when all he has to worry about is scoring. Well, he can be effective as the initiator too, but ideally you want him to focus just on scoring.
Other guys on this team have to become consistent scoring threats if we want Odom as the initiator (pretty obvious). I get frustrated with Lamar at times, but I'll admit the guy is shouldering some heavy responsibility. _________________ If you meet the Buddha in the lane, feed him the ball. ~Phil Jackson |

Phil solved the problem when he told him this "That's just my coach telling me to go," Odom said. "... He's told me to make my own plays, as far as breaking the offense." |

I would like Lamar to shoot more as well, but sometimes when I do see him play (live in Orlando don't get to see a lot of games here) I see he's really in no position to take more shots. I see him come down on the post time to time and get few touches. I mean Phil is the coach that makes his star players do there job. He sets them up to do what they can do. I don't think the question is why isn't Lamar shooting more? The correct question is why Phil is not setting up Lamar more to score? |

We need to "go big" with our line up and force either a big man on the wing to guard Cookie and hopefully a little to try and match Odom when he takes him into the post...
We can create alot of mismatches and I think we really need our players to be aware of that and take advantage...
It shouldn't always be up to the coach to "make adjustments" to take advantage of mismatches, the players need to be in tune to what the D is giving them... |

Very good idea thats really a possibility with odom given the green light to step outside the tri offense. I think at that time JJ should be on the floor too.

He should take more shots, but GOOD SHOTS ! _________________ The Kings are unbeaten in 10 home games since Artest's arrival, beating opponents by an average of 16 points per game. The Kings have won 14 of their last 18 overall, with their opponents' scoring average and shooting percentages all dropping sharply. |
