Rival Raja Bell Could Be Free Agent to Help Cure Bench Woes

COMMENTARY | Kobe Bryant has a knack for making nice with his enemies in the interest of pursuing his ultimate goal of winning a ring.
The list reads like a who's-who of enforcers or star players who gave the Lakers fits in the heat of battle throughout the team's many NBA playoff runs during Bryant's tenure in Los Angeles -- Matt Barnes (Orlando Magic), Metta World Peace (Houston Rockets), and most recently Steve Nash (Phoenix Suns) -- have all joined forces with the Black Mamba.
According to ProBasketballTalk, Raja Bell could be the next former foe of Bryant's to don the purple and gold.
To understand the history that Bell has as an adversary of Los Angeles requires a look back to the 2001 NBA Finals, where the Lakers beat the Allen Iverson-led Philadelphia 76ers en route to their second of three consecutive titles, 4-1
.

Raja looked at the Lakers once already and turned them down. Why would that change now?

Andrew Bynum might not sign extension with Orlando Magic if traded

It looks like both of the prizes in a potential Los Angeles Lakers-Orlando Magic trade wouldn’t be sold on remaining with their new teams for the long-term.

Yahoo Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Twitter Sunday night that Lakers center Andrew Bynum “has shown no inclination” toward extending his contract with the Magic if the Lakers worked out a trade for Magic center Dwight Howard that involved Bynum. As SI’s Sam Amick wrote last week, the Lakers might have diminished their chances in the Howard sweepstakes by giving up four draft picks for point guard Steve Nash. But Bynum is also seen as the most valuable asset the Magic could receive in any trade for Howard.

Steve Nash? I don't want him on the team though.

Mavericks make Andrew Bynum's short list for next summer

The Dallas Mavericks lost out on Deron Williams and other free agents last week, but they could be in the running next summer for Andrew Bynum.

The Los Angeles Lakers center would be interested in playing for the Mavericks if he doesn't reach an extension with the Lakers, Yahoo! Sports reported Sunday.

The report, which also lists Houston and Cleveland on Bynum's short list of teams, said Bynum "has shown no inclination to agree to an immediate extension if sent to Orlando as part of a Dwight Howard package."

Bynum, 24, will make $16.47 million next season with the Lakers and will become an unrestricted free agent if he doesn't get an extension.

The Mavs are scheduled to resume talks today with point guard Ramon Sessions, according to a source. Sessions opted out of the final year of his contract with the Lakers that would have paid him $4.55 million.

Lakers fans, beware of what you ask for

Dwight Howard is well into his second year of holding at least two NBA franchises, and sometimes more, hostage to his whims.
The Orlando Magic's All-Star center, one of the NBA's best rebounders and shot-blockers, has one intended destination: the Brooklyn, formerly New Jersey, Nets. That's the only team he says he will sign a long-term deal with after his contract expires after the 2012-13.

Do you think the Lakers will break the bank for Drew just to keep him away from Dallas?

Raja Bell is hot garbage now. He was hot garbage last season. He's done. We do not need to "fortify" our bench with geezers. Grant Hill is different because he doesn't play like a geezer, but that doesn't mean we should scour the old men's pool for whatever scraps we can find and throw them onto the bench.

We tried that last year with Murphy & Kapono and all it did was leave us without a bench.

I don't know about that, Jam. I saw him defend Kobe in some Utah games and he's still a really good defender.

If he's still capable to hit the 3, not a bad pick up. He's probably going to Miami anyway. The problem with Murphy and Kapono is that they didn't do anything but shoot the 3. And the Lakers offense sucked last year, not even maximizing them. With Bell, he can possibly be a spot up shooter and also defend. Look at Shane Battier, how much he helped Miami at the F position.

Reason Bell is getting bought out is not that's done. It's that he wants out of Utah. Had a big fight with their head coach. Realize he started almost all of Utah's game last year and was assigned the best scoring wing on the opposing team. He is no more "done" than Ron Artest is for us.

Anyway he'll go to Miami probably. They just keep getting better and better support around James/Wade/Bosh.

With Nash/Kobe/bigs, our team now desperately needs some 2-way help. Guys comfortable in spotting up 3's and working hard on D.

No, they would sign him to an extension because he's one of the best young big men in the world.

Dallas, Houston & Cleveland? So cap space is what Drew is looking at apparently, not the chance to win. Can't say I'm all that surprised.

Wolf, he missed half the season last year. He also had far too many games of scoring 1 or 2 or 4 points. On top of that, Raja Bell is a SG, which the Jazz desperately needed and he STILL couldn't man the position. They had to resort to playing guys out of position to fill that spot and now we're thinking we should add Raja? No thank you.

We need CONSISTENT production off the bench this year. We cannot afford to fool ourselves into thinking that guys that haven't consistently produced will magically do that now for the Lakers. 20 points a game off the pine killed us last season.

With an old roster, it's that much more important to have RELIABLE bench production, because injury risk is even greater. Enough with trying to recycle has-beens and telling ourselves why it will work. It's one thing if other options are dried up, because we have to make the most of it at that point; but it's quite another thing to target them as the first few choices we should land.

Quote:
How Steve Nash became a Laker

NEW YORK -- Parked at a back table at Aurora in SoHo, huddled over Italian food as the clock ticked past midnight, Bill Duffy could have used a second phone. The one in his hand started ringing as though 38-year-old Steve Nash were a 28-year-old free agent.

The calls were coming in so fast that Duffy and Nash didn't even notice that two of the sport's fairly well-known faces were sitting nearby. They didn't spot Steve Lavin and Gene Keady until the celebrated college coaches got up and headed for the door.

"The phone," Duffy said, "was just buzzing."

The calls were coming in so fast because a number of teams out there, after hearing for two seasons straight that the Phoenix Suns couldn't bring themselves to trade Steve Nash, sensed an opportunity. Unlike Deron Williams, undisputed prized catch of the NBA's 2012 free-agent class, Nash wouldn't be limiting himself to a choice between two destinations. Unlike Williams, Nash was a gettable game-changer.

I wouldn't be bothered with Bell because he started to hit the injury wall and may not be healthy and the Lakers can't afford to have backups for bench players. Get a younger guard.
