Regarding large and small markets--they can be defined by population but when it comes to Dwight Howard and other NBA players it's probably the size of the media market that counts. There is a difference: the population of Dallas for example is 1.2 million. The population of Houston is 2.1 million. However, the Dallas-Ft.Worth television market is the 5th largest in the US, beating out Houston and probably making it a more attractive location for the Dwight Howard brand (not to mention LA--see list below).
And I'm not sure about the Asian market augmentation argument. The Chinese weren't Rockets fans, they were Yao Ming fans. Had Yao been traded all those Chinese would not have remained Rocket fans, instead the fans and Chinese media would have hopped over to whatever team he had landed on. In fact, they probably would have preferred he had played for the Warriors with their sixth largest media market and largest Chinese-American population in the US.
Sure, the Rockets probably have inroads to Chinese business today due to Yao, but I think it's the player--not the team--that draws the interest. And I'm sure those interests were dwindling at a rapid rate, at least until the Lin signing. Great move by Houston so they can now renew or sustain those contacts and deals...but would the Chinese care about Dwight Howard just because he played for the Rockets? Even playing alongside Lin? Did any of Yao's teammates share in the fruits of Chinese marketing? It also seems that Kobe is one of the most popular players in China today...er, playing for the second largest media market...LA.
Top 10 Television Markets 2012
1 New York
2 Los Angeles
3 Chicago
4 Philadelphia
5 Dallas-Ft. Worth
6 San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose
7 Boston
8 Atlanta
9 Washington, DC
10 Houston
And I wouldn't be surprised if there was a huge drop off after #3. |

it's not new info - it's just an agent making sure his player doesn't get compromised by making a pre-arranged deal which is illegal.
A pre-arranged deal can be made mind you - under the table - and it is illegal but gets done in NBA - just have to be black/white to media about it.
He was never going to extend - it was always about finishing his contract and getting a 5-year deal - vs 3-years in extension. _________________ Salary Cap Strategist and Columnist at Bleacher Report and on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/EricPincus |

Great job,I am so glad.
Good decision Dwight Howard.I guess I had the issue, for some reason the signal is weak to my house and couldn't even make a call, any member suggest me on that issue.

Fair enough. I still think it means he won't sign here, though. |

I agree. I come here for new, relevant information. Not to see something stickied that's no longer applicable to the current situation.
That being said, I wish that Howard would make up his mind already. I can't take anymore of this. |
