Dwight Howard in tears meeting Kareem

By Arash Markazi | ESPN.com

LOS ANGELES -- After mentioning on Twitter that he would like to work out with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, new Los Angeles Laker Dwight Howard took the first step towards that plan by sitting down with the Hall of Fame center Monday afternoon.

"Just sat down with @kaj33," Howard tweeted after the meeting. "Man God is so good. Was in tears. What a blessing. This is like a dream come true. Go Lakers."

When training camp opens next month, Greg Somogyi will hold one distinction not even All-Star big men Dwight Howard and Pau Gasol can match: tallest Laker.

How long the 7-foot-3 center graces the Lakers' roster is another matter.

The Lakers signed the former UC Santa Barbara player to a non-guaranteed contract Wednesday and extended an invitation to training camp as the team fills out the margins of its roster for practice purposes.

Like former UCLA forward Reeves Nelson, whom the Lakers also signed as expected Wednesday, Somogyi is the longest of longshots to make the team. Somogyi went undrafted after averaging 3.5 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in 12.2 minutes during his four seasons with the Gauchos.

7'3" with those averages. Look up the word "stiff" in the dictionary and you'll find this guy's picture.

Lakers Trade Rumors: Is Pau Gasol Nearing His End In Los Angeles?
By Jason Van Hoven - Posted: 09/06/12 12:55PM EDT

Los Angeles Lakers forward Pau Gasol might be closer to his end wearing purple and gold.

The Lakers' acquisition of superstar center Dwight Howard for this season presents both a huge benefit and drawback: while the team is now most likely in a great position to win an NBA title, it will be committing almost $100 million in salary, which puts it well over the luxury tax. And that will probably get the Lakers financially thinking ahead to next season, a season in which they will still be over the cap.

As a result, general manager Mitch Kupchak may consider this season trading one veteran who is under a hefty contract for the 2013-2014 season.

It's not possible to fathom that Kobe Bryant would get traded. Steve Nash was just acquired in a trade and Metta World Peace can still provide tough defense.

That would leave Gasol, who will make $39 million over the next two seasons, as the odd man out.

Los Angeles Lakers: Dwight Howard To Begin Working With Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
Jayne Kamin-Oncea-US PRESSWIRE

One of the more famous stories around the Los Angeles Lakers land is one about Andrew Bynum, who is now with the Philadelphia 76ers, and his bad attitude, go figure. While with the Lakers Bynum decided to take up some lessons withLaker legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

The two worked together for a few years, but the relationship stopped abruptly when Bynum declared that he had learned all he needed to know from possibly the greatest center of all-time. The move was certainly telling of the way that Bynum’s attitude and the way he viewed himself.

So, for the past few years, Kareem has had no one to mentor and has been ostracized from the Lakers organization, that is until now. Yesterday a fan tweeted at Dwight Howard asking if he would be willing to work with Kareem, Howard’s response is as follows, “I am. When I’m released.”

“When I’m released” is in reference to Howard still not being medically cleared to play, although Howard should be fine for the beginning of the season October 3oth when the Lakers take on the Dallas Mavericks at home.

This recent news is great for Laker fans and shows how Howard is truly dedicating himself to improve probably his weakest facet of his game, his post moves. Kareem was the master of the only unblockable shot in NBA history, the sky-hook.

With the speed and quickness that Howard possesses, which is 100 times better than Bynum’s, there is no telling how much good Kareem can do for Howard.

NBA Trade Rumors – LA Lakers Still Looking to Move Pau Gasol?
September 06, 2012 02:25 AM EDT
comments: 1

The LA Lakers made the biggest move this summer as the team dealt for NBA All-Star Dwight Howard, but the team now has nearly $100 million in salary on the books for this year and more on the way in 2013 and that could lead to one or more of the team's veterans moving to a new franchise in the coming year.

Veteran forward Pau Gasol was rumored in several deals last year. Expect the same this season, especially if the team starts the year slowly. Gasol will make $39 million over the next two seasons and with the new addition of Howard, it could make the Spaniard expendable.

Gasol averaged over 17 points and 10 rebounds last season and several teams, including Houston and Atlanta could show some interest. The LA Lakers need some young players added to their roster and moving the veteran could land the team several draft choices or a couple of good young players.

Rumor: Former Laker Matt Barnes Possibly Coming To Boston?
Sep 6th, 2012 at 5:16 pm by Mike CerraCeltics
Home » Celtics » Rumor: Former Laker Matt Barnes Possibly Coming To Boston?

You read that right; the Celtics are supposedly interested in Matt Barnes and vise versa. Barnes, an aging small forward, may be a good fit in Boston. Personally, I’d prefer size instead. One thing that I’m sure fans will start asking is how much do we pay him?

I highly doubt the Celtics will offer Barnes the bi-annual exception worth $2 million, but they do have the option of signing him to a veteran’s minimum. Another thing that sticks out to me is his attitude and the way he caries himself. In the last few years we’ve had players who were high maintenance off the court. But if he is willing to come in with the right attitude and mindset, I wouldn’t mind having him.
