NBA tax may soon be a luxury Lakers can't afford

This season, payroll and luxury taxes will cost the Lakers $128 million. But when the league's stiffer taxes take effect in the 2013-14 season, keeping the Lakers' core together could cost nearly $200 million.

'Cause I'm the Taxman

It won't be long before $128 million doesn't buy the Lakers what it used to.

Like, by next season.

This season, that amount will cover the 2012-13 payroll and associated luxury taxes for a roster dripping with superstars Dwight Howard, Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash and Pau Gasol.

A year from now, it could pay for only a portion of that same roster and maybe a pair of Bryant's high-end sneakers. Keeping the core of the Lakers together could cost nearly $200 million.

Thanks, new collective bargaining agreement.

A breakdown on potential Lakers payroll for 2013-14 season

Feeling the crunch

The Lakers, with a NBA-high payroll of $99.2 million this season, are on pace to pay $28.9 million in luxury taxes because their payroll is that far above the tax threshold of $70.3 million. Assuming they re-sign Dwight Howard next summer to a maximum contract, their payroll will increase for the 2013-14 season, when stiffer luxury taxes commence under the new collective bargaining agreement.

Here is a breakdown of how a potential payroll of $105 million, paired with a projected tax level of $73 million, would put the Lakers $32 million above the threshold and cost them an additional $94.5 million in taxes in the 2013-14 season:

Team salary above luxury-tax threshold/Tax rate multiplier/Incremental amount Lakers would owe

$0-$4.99 million/$1.50/$7.5 million

$5 million-$9.99 million/$1.75/$8.75 million

$10 million-$14.99 million/$2.50/$12.5 million

$15 million-$19.99 million/$3.25/$16.25 million

$20 million-$24.99 million/$3.75/$18.75 million

$25 million-$29.99 million/$4.25/$21.25 million

$30 million-$32 million/$4.75/$9.5 million

Total Lakers taxes/$94.5 million

Metta World Peace says the Lakers want to 'go 73-9'

Metta World Peace wants to be No. 1 in terms of most wins in a season. (Getty Images)

The bar has been raised. And you thought him saying "nobody's getting past" the Lakers was big.

When the Celtics added the Big 3, they just talked about winning a title and bringing Boston back to relevance. When the Lakers added Pau Gasol, they just talked about contending. When the Miami Heat formed the Triad, they talked about "not one, not two, not three ... not six, not seven ..." championships, but even they never reached for the number. Not that number. That's hallowed ground.

Metta World Peace, though? He's trampled on that ground and stuck a Lakers flag in it. From Sports Radio Interviews (emphasis ours):

What he thinks about the team possibly not having Dwight Howard at the start of Training Camp:

“We definitely want to beat the Bulls record and go 73-9, that's definitely something that I want to do. Whoever is out there at the beginning of the season then we gotta get it. It's as simple as that. We just have to go get it. (Host: So that Bulls record is something you're thinking about?) No question. You try to snatch records before you leave this earth. You gotta try to do a lot of great things so it's definitely a goal. With Dwight Howard, (Steve) Nash, Kobe (Bryant), myself, Pau (Gasol) and then (Antawn) Jamison and a lot of great additions it's something that's possible.”

Kendrick Perkins: 'We're not chasing the Lakers'
by Lang Greene, Hoopsworld.com

On paper, the Los Angeles Lakers arguably had the best offseason of any franchise in the league. The team acquired Dwight Howard and Steve Nash in two separate trades and were able to sign free agents Antawn Jamison and Jodie Meeks to deals far below their preconceived market values.

After two consecutive seasons of embarrassing playoff flameouts, the Lakers have once again risen to the top of numerous preseason ranking polls as early favorites to emerge out of the Western Conference and compete for a title.

The early-season anointing has led Oklahoma City Thunder center Kendrick Perkins to issue a reminder of the current Western Conference hierarchy the last time he checked.

New York, Los Angeles return to prominance in NBA

by Paul Coro - Sept. 17, 2012 07:38 PM
azcentral sports

Big-city basketball is twice as nice again in the NBA.

Nearly as predictable as a Los Angeles Lakers ascension this season, the NBA is about to enjoy its two-city metropolises' finest season in two decades. The Lakers, Clippers, Knicks and Nets have not made the playoffs in the same season since 1993.

That is almost a certainty this time. The Los Angeles teams have risen to be potential home-court playoff teams in the West while New York and -- still getting used to this -- Brooklyn are competitive second-tier playoff teams in the East.

Good teams in the largest markets are ideal for the NBA, although the league's allure has been just fine. A Western Conference finals series between teams in the 36th (San Antonio) and 44th (Oklahoma City) markets drew 16 percent more fans than Dallas-Oklahoma City did for the 2011 conference finals.

Summer personnel shifting pulled the Lakers in front of the Clippers, who resent such assumptions, and might have
vaulted the Nets past the Knicks to the tune of "Hello Brooklyn."

Jalen Rose cost Kobe Bryant a Finals game

I remember it like it was yesterday. Indianapolis, 2000, and the Lakers' training staff covered the window to a training room with paper -- no small amount of work, it was a big window -- to keep reporters from seeing where Kobe Bryant was receiving treatment. Bryant was in there with a bad ankle sprain, and nobody knew if he'd play or not. A title hung in the balance.

Bryant did miss a game, but returned to play brilliantly in the series, and the Lakers won rings.

But how did that injury occur? Jalen Rose tells Grantland's David Jacoby it was no accident.

While Dwight Howard's rehabbing his back, Lakers will feel effect

The rationale for the Lakers essentially trading Andrew Bynum for Dwight Howard remains simple.

"We got the best," Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak said this offseason.

But there's also another issue. The Lakers may have had a healthy Bynum, but they rid themselves the risk in absorbing another one of his long-term injuries. To do so, the Lakers took the short-term hit that they may play without Howard to open the season as he rehabs his surgically repaired back. Considering he's only missed seven games in his eight-year career prior to his back injury last March, it's understandable the Lakers expect this won't be a long-term issue.

No one should fret because Howard won't play in the preseason opener Oct. 7 against Golden State (except for Lakers fans attending the actual game in Fresno). And no one should wonder if Howard's vague timetable means he's experienced more setbacks (the Lakers and Howard say that's not the case). Still, Howard's absence will affect various team dynamics, both good and bad. Below is a look at them.

Comparing Howard with past Lakers greats

LOS ANGELES -- Before Dwight Howard was introduced as the Los Angeles Lakers’ newest center last month, he took a quick tour of the team’s training facility. As he walked around Jeanie Buss’ office, he took a long look at the 10 Larry O’Brien trophies the team has won in Los Angeles since 1980 before gazing out her window at the retired jerseys on the walls surrounding the practice court.

When Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak introduced Howard during his introductory news conference, he wasted little time expressing the expectations placed on the six-time All-Star center.

“We're hopeful that 10 years from now,” Kupchak said, “we can add a jersey to that wall over there that says Dwight Howard.”

If Howard is to join the likes of fellow big men Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and, later this season, Shaquille O’Neal with retired jerseys at the Lakers’ practice facility and Staples Center, he will have to deliver much like his predecessors in the paint did.

And much like Chamberlain, Abdul-Jabbar and O’Neal, Howard was acquired by the Lakers in what is considered the prime of his career and with the expectation of winning championships.

Is that a realistic expectation for Howard in his first season with the Lakers? Every situation is different, of course, but perhaps looking at how Chamberlain, Abdul-Jabbar and O’Neal contributed to the Lakers during their debut seasons with the team can provide a realistic idea of what to anticipate from Howard in his first season in L.A.

Ranking Los Angeles Lakers' Revamped Bench Unit with the Best in the NBA

7. Lakers

As it happens, the Lakers bench looks like it might be the seventh-best in the NBA, and even that might be pushing it.

Antawn Jamison should be able to average double figures in scoring, though he's among the league's worst pick-and-roll finishers and is too often out-defended by his own shadow. Keeping Jordan Hill on the cheap was an underrated coup for Mitch Kupchak, though he'll likely be forced to start until Dwight Howard returns from back surgery, leaving Earl Clark to sop up minutes in the front court.

On the bright side, sharpshooting could be a strength among LA's reserves. Jodie Meeks (36.5 percent from three) and Chris Duhon (42 percent) can both stretch opposing defenses, and if Steve Blake somehow regains his confidence from the perimeter, he'd be a prime candidate to join them.

The Lakers subs won't exactly overwhelm the opposition, but a drastic improvement over last season's rock-bottom bunch is well within range and could be the key to the team's title hopes.
