Game Thoughts

"A revival of an old hit is on the horizon, and tonight is the last dress rehearsal. Bernie Bickerstaff has warmed up the crowd and is ready to exit stage left. After that, it's Showtime. Let's hope the sequel is as good as the original. As we all know, they rarely are.

The Lakers come into this game with a 2-1 record in the wake of Mike Brown's departure, including the rarest of all Laker feats...an "encouraging loss" against the Spurs on Tuesday. Offensively, they have simply been rolling the ball out there and letting the basketball instincts of their best players dictate the action. The last few games have mostly consisted of pick & rolls and post ups for the bigs. Very little weak side action or player movement involved. They have been remarkably competitive during the last 3 games considering their lack of offensive direction.

The big difference has come on the defensive end, where a simple injection of enthusiasm has worked wonders. There have been no real schematic changes on this end of the court, you just simply have guys playing harder, and the Lakers have held their last 3 opponents to 40% or under from the field. Dwight Howard's health is improving incrementally over time as well, and he's beginning to anchor the defense in the way that we envisioned when he was acquired.

Phoenix comes in with a respectable 4-5 record, having lost in overtime to Chicago 112-106 on Wednesday. They are unusual in the respect that unlike most teams that have no chance of contending, they are a fairly experienced squad, sporting veterans like Luis Scola, Michael Beasley, Goran Dragic, Jared Dudley, and Marcin Gortat. Despite leaving several years ago, Mike D'Antoni's philosophy still permeates the team's philosophy, as the Suns are 5th in the league in pace. In the long grind of an NBA season, an experienced team that plays an up tempo style can beat a much better squad if they're caught napping.

Look for Phoenix to push the pace, run a healthy dose of high pick & roll with Dragic/Gortat, and utilize Scola's crafty low post/mid range game on the weak side of that. Shannon Brown, Markieff Morris, & Jared Dudley provide spacing, as does Michael Beasley, who also doubles as their isolation/1-on-1 threat. Their sets are very simple, meat & potatoes basketball, but they're decently effective.

Defensively they're exploitable, as they rank next to last in the league in Points Per 100 Possessions (109.3). Despite their defensive struggles, Marcin Gortat is 2nd in the league in blocked shots at 3.3 bpg. His familiarity with Dwight Howard, after spending 3 1/2 years guarding him in practice in Orlando, could pose some issues for the Lakers, but not enough to make up for their defensive deficiencies 1 through 4.

Yesterday Mike D'Antoni stressed the importance of getting as many possessions as possible when you have superior talent. Tonight would be a good night to apply that principle."

Lakers 111
Phoenix 93

Glad to have your game thread back.

Last time the first home game vs Suns Kobe went for 48, expecting a high scoring game again.

Awesome!!!! Thanks Lakers First and GoldenChild.

We need to get those TO's under control and if we don't score over 100 tonight it will be very dissappointing given how awful the Sun's are defensively.

Keys to the game:

Pound the glass and limit their possessions. Avoid the long ball to prevent run outs (to slow the pace again), and limit our own turnovers.

As for tomorrow night's game vs Phoenix, Steve Blake (abdomen) is a question mark, but Jordan Hill (wrist) is probable. Nash out.

Anyone else tired of the belly aching about PJ?

I wanted him too, but he's not coming and regardless of how it played out and who did what...he's not coming.

After watching us play good, but not great ball without Nash or a HC against the Spurs I know we will be more than fine and get our stride.

I'm excited to see more tempo in the O.

That Jim got slammed by Magic and still spoke highly of him means a lot to me.

That MikeyD got slammed by Magic and reached out to have dinner with him means a lot to me.

But what means the most to me is #17. How we get there is the fun part.

Yup, he's not going to play on Friday. I think it's likely on Sunday. Maybe like 80%.
