Preview: Lakers at Clippers

By Eric Pincus
January 4, 2013, 6:12 a.m.

The Lakers (15-16) visit the Clippers (25-8) on Friday night at Staples Center.

After winning 17 straight games, the Clippers have suddenly lost two in a row, both on the road (Denver and Golden State). Even with the two losses, they still have the second-best winning percentage in the league (75.8%), behind the Oklahoma City Thunder.

On Nov. 2, the Lakers fell apart in the third quarter, losing to the Clippers 105-95. By then, Steve Nash was already out with a leg injury, with Steve Blake starting in his place.

Jamal Crawford led the Clippers with 21 points off the bench, but that was part of a balanced effort that was able to overcome 40 points from Kobe Bryant.

The Lakers are desperate for wins just to climb back into the top eight in the Western Conference. The Clippers are fighting for the best record in the league, but coming off of a two-game losing streak, they should be hungry for a win (especially against the Lakers).

Upcoming schedule could decide Lakers' fate

By Eric Pincus
January 4, 2013, 8:00 a.m.

The Lakers (15-16) are heading into a very difficult stretch of games with visits to the Clippers, Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs. They'll also host the Denver Nuggets and Oklahoma City Thunder.

"We don't like our position in the standings but are we are a better or a worse team than even our record?" asked Coach Mike D'Antoni. "I think after this week we'll get a better understanding of, 'OK, this is getting a little scary and we've got to get up there' or we're coming along. So, yeah this is a big week for us."

And if they're worse than their record? What then?

"We just keep working," said D'Antoni. "Keep going as hard as you can. I mean that's all you can do. You just keep putting your head down and try to get as good as you can."

If that's what the Lakers are already doing, with mixed results at best, does working harder lift the team up from 11th place in the Western Conference?

Los Angeles Lakers (15-16) at Los Angeles Clippers (25-8), 10:30 p.m. (ET)
Published: January 4, 2013 Updated 30 minutes ago

By Sports Network — The Sports Network

Kobe Bryant didn't baby his words when asked why energy has been a problem for the Los Angeles Lakers this season.

Set to play for just the second time in the past week, the Lakers aim to return to .500 on Friday night and deal the once-streaking Los Angeles Clippers a third straight setback.

Thanks in part to the return of veteran point guard Steve Nash from a leg injury, the Lakers began to hit their groove in late December and won six of seven prior to a 103-99 setback to the visiting Philadelphia 76ers.

Bryant paced the Lakers with 36 points on 14-of-29 shooting and hit a 3- pointer that pulled his club to within two with 1:28 to play. However, the Sixers followed with a bucket and Bryant turned the ball over before Nash and Metta World Peace missed some shots.

Nash added 12 points and 10 assists, but Dwight Howard and Pau Gasol combined to shoot just 3-of-19 from the floor for 18 points.

So, why the lack of energy despite having had the previous three days off?

Lakers-Clippers Preview
By TAYLOR BECHTOLD (STATS Writer) | The Associated Press – 21 hours

After a franchise-record winning streak, the Los Angeles Clippers hope to rediscover their shooting touch and stop a skid.
The Los Angeles Lakers have also stumbled following their longest win streak of the season.
Having dropped two in a row since taking 17 straight, the Clippers will try to match a franchise record with their 11th straight home victory when they host the Lakers on Friday night.
The Clippers' 17-game run through Sunday is the longest in the NBA since Boston reeled off 19 straight wins in 2008-09. However, they've posted season-low shooting percentages in each of their last two games - both defeats.
The Clippers (25-8) made 38.5 percent in a 92-78 loss at Denver on Tuesday and 36.4 percent in a 115-94 defeat at Golden State on Wednesday.

Five keys for Lakers against Clippers

ESPNLosAngeles.com

LOS ANGELES -- There have been 127 games between the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers since the Clips moved to L.A. before the 1984-85 season, and the Lakers have won 97 of them.

However, if you think Friday’s Lakers-Clippers game has a different feel than most of those other matchups, you have good reason. In those 127 games, the Clippers came into the showdown with a better record than their crosstown rival just 14 times, going 3-11 in those games. Even rarer has been a matchup this late into the season with the Clippers doing better than the Lakers when the teams tipped it off. According to Elias Sports Bureau, there have been only four times out of those 127 games that the Clippers had a better record than the Lakers coming into the game when both teams had played 30 or more games entering game day, and the Clippers are just 1-3 in those games.

All of this is to say, when the 15-16 Lakers face off against the 25-8 Clippers on Friday, at least they’ll have history on their side. Here are five more things the Lakers can do to help their cause:

1. Come ready to play

LAKERS NOTEBOOK: Kobe Bryant enjoys Clippers' version of Showtime
By Mark Medina, Staff Writer

Updated: 01/03/2013 11:29:30 PM PST

Once they were nothing more than a punchline.

Instead, the Clippers (25-8) enter today's game against the Lakers (15-16) in a designated home game at Staples Center fielding plenty of compliments from the team's star.

"They're one of the top contenders," Bryant said.

The Clippers even reminded him of the Showtime Lakers.

"They're very spectacular and fun to watch," Bryant said. "They have higher jumpers than Showtime."

Bryant wore a foam-type material inside his right nostril after Thursday's practice, insisting his recent cold caused a bloody nose instead of a sharp elbow during a five-on-five scrimmage. Nonetheless, it personified the Lakers physically battered image.

The Clippers (25-8) may have lost two consecutive games after their 17-game winning streak snapped. But they're still competing with Oklahoma City (24-7) and San Antonio (26-8) for the top spot in the Western Conference.

When it comes to L.A.'s NBA reserves, Lakers can take a seat against Clippers
By Mark Medina, Staff Writer

The crosstown Clippers are fielding nicknames about their esteemed reserves.

The Lakers are still figuring out who's going to permanently fit their rotation.

Kobe Bryant gushes that Clippers guard Jamal Crawford should win the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year for his consistency.

The Lakers' eventually took their former sixth man Antawn Jamison out of the rotation because of his inconsistency.

The Clippers rank first among NBA's benches in points (41.7), second in minutes (21.5) and second in efficiency (49.7). The Lakers fare among the worst in such categories, including 26 th in points (25.8), 28 th in minutes (14.9) and 25 th in efficiency (29.5).

When the Lakers (15-16) play the Clippers (25-8) tonight in a designated road game at Staples Center, the game won't just add another chapter to a suddenly brewing rivalry. It could also reveal a contrast in bench....

The Forum: Comparing Lakers And Clippers
The Los Angeles Lakers have arrived at the make-or-break juncture of the season, and if the schedule and standings weren't daunting enough, the Lakers also must contend with time and the fundamentals of physics.

First, the facts. The Lakers (15-16) play the Clippers Friday, the Denver Nuggets on Sunday, back-to-back games in Houston and San Antonio next Tuesday and Wednesday, and a home game against the Oklahoma City Thunder next Friday. Five games in eight days against five teams on track to qualify for the playoffs. If we're going to take them seriously as contenders, the Lakers need to go 4-1. Normally, a 3-2 record in this challenging period would be encouraging; in this case, that would leave them at .500 for the season. That won't cut it.

"It's a big stretch for us," Kobe Bryant said. "We've got to turn things around. At this stage of the year, going against these top teams, it's a tough stretch … but it's a chance to see what we're made of."

Barkley says old, slow Lakers have no shot at NBA title
Kurt Helin Jan 4, 2013, 2:15 PM EST

A few diehard Lakers fans are still clinging on to the hope they could win an NBA title this season.

Why? Why is the team itself still optimistic? Because they still have so much talent, something Kevin Ding explains at the Orange Country Register. That talent hasn’t been healthy or fit together all that well yet, the defense and bench are in question, but the possibility of what that talent could bring keeps title hopes alive in Lakers nation.

Charles Barkley would like to crush those hopes.

He was on The Dan LeBatard Show on 790 The Ticket in Miami and did not mince words when asked if the Lakers could win a title this year (thanks to Sports Radio Interviews).

“None. Zero. Zero chance. I think Oklahoma City, Memphis and the Spurs are the three best teams in the West. I still have my concerns. Everybody is on the Clippers’ bandwagon. I don’t like their half-court offense. I don’t like their free throw shooting. I love Chris Paul. I said it for years. I thought Jason Kidd was the best leader in the NBA. I passed that mantle, in my personal opinion, to Chris Paul, but I don’t like their half-court offense.”

LOS ANGELES – Chris Paul had 30 points and 13 assists, Blake Griffin added 24 points, and the Los Angeles Clippers led all the way in beating the Lakers 107-102 on Friday night.
Kobe Bryant scored 38 points and Dwight Howard had 21 points and 15 rebounds for the Lakers, who lost for the second time this season to their Staples Center co-tenants.
Bryant carried the Lakers in the fourth quarter when they closed to 99-97 on his 23-foot jumper with 1:29 left. But Paul scored the Clippers' final eight points to seal the victory and drop the Lakers two games below .500. The Clippers lead the Lakers by 10 games in the standings.
The Clippers had dropped two consecutive road games earlier in the week, when their 17-game winning streak was snapped.

Kobe and the Lakers made it exciting in the 4th. Shame the coaching staff still doesn't realize that a team like the Lakers needs to be physical, ground and pound type of style ... like the 4th Q.
