Nuggets-Lakers Preview

By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO (STATS Writer) | The Associated Press

Dwight Howard thinks winning stems from strong friendships, even if it's disingenuous.
That could be why even Kobe Bryant's staggering production hasn't been enough for the Los Angeles Lakers lately.
With Howard's status uncertain due to injury, the Lakers may need to find additional support for Bryant as they host the Denver Nuggets on Sunday night.
Los Angeles (15-17) seemed to be reloading for a run at a third NBA title in five seasons after it acquired Howard from Orlando in a blockbuster four-team, 12-player trade in August.
The move has yet to pay off as expected, even with Howard averaging 17.4 points and 12.0 rebounds while Bryant leads the NBA at 30.5 points per game.

Howard not sure he'll be ready against Denver

January 5, 2013

After tweaking his shoulder Friday night in the Lakers' 107-102 loss to the Clippers, Dwight Howard said he wasn't sure whether he'll be able to play against the Denver Nuggets on Sunday.

Howard said at first he "thought it was a stinger" after Caron Butler came down on the Lakers center's shoulder.

Howard called it a sprained rotator cuff and said he's a "game-day decision."

Coach Mike D'Antoni didn't seem to be worried, saying the chances that Howard would play are "good."

Howard said he woke up extremely sore. He skipped practice Saturday and received treatment from the Lakers' training staff.

The Lakers (15-17) are currently in 11th place in the Western Conference standings, two games behind the Portland Trail Blazers (17-15) and Nuggets (18-16), who are in seventh and eighth, respectively. A victory Sunday would give the Lakers a 2-1 series lead over the Nuggets with a final matchup Feb. 25 in Denver.

Lakers' Kobe Bryant shows Twitter followers his vulnerable side

With Lakers struggling at 15-17, Kobe Bryant tweets about 'Thoughts of self doubt' and wonders 'Am I done?' And he doesn't back away from it when meeting with media.

The message popped up on Twitter near midnight, not long after the Lakers lost to the Clippers.

"Thoughts of self doubt...Am I done? Is this how my career will end?? I REFUSE to give in to these thoughts. #strongwill #countonchallenges"

It was from Kobe Bryant. He didn't step back from it 12 hours later while talking to reporters after Lakers practice.

"Everybody has it. I'm human just like everybody else," he said. "I think the way I react to it is probably a little different than anybody else. I don't feed into it. I'm able to face it. I'm able to deal with it. I'm able to roll through it."

Bryant wasn't worried that teammates would see his vulnerable side.

"I think it's good for them, especially for them to know I have those moments as well," said Bryant, under contract with the Lakers for only one more season (and $30.5 million) after this one. "I'm sure they've had them. I don't know how they respond to them. In certain instances, maybe they let the self-doubt get the best of them. I refuse to let that happen."

Lakers' Dwight Howard expected to play Sunday night versus Nuggets

Dwight Howard took part in the Lakers' morning shoot-around and was expected to play Sunday night against Denver.

Howard did not practice Saturday because of a sprained rotator cuff in his right shoulder.

He was injured Friday against the Clippers after Caron Butler fouled him. Howard returned to the game following a Lakers timeout.

Howard is averaging 17.4 points and 12 rebounds in his first season with the team.

The Lakers have a tough schedule this week, starting Sunday against a team ahead of them in the standings and continuing with back-to-back games in Houston and San Antonio on Tuesday and Wednesday.

They finish the week with a home game Friday against Oklahoma City.

He came out early today (only him and Meeks were out early) and worked on shooting drills with Darvin Ham.

But both him and Hill looked fine and ran at full speed.

Duhon banked in a shot from the past half-court (near the opposite 3 pt line).

Sounds good, but maybe Duhon should work on shots he will actually take in game. I know he's got range, but i dont think he's had a decent game since nash came back...

Preview: Lakers vs. Nuggets

The Lakers (15-17) will host the Denver Nuggets (19-16) on Sunday night at Staples Center.

Both teams have met once this season in their respective cities, where the home teams have emerged victorious. For the Lakers, currently in 11th place in the Western Conference, catching a team like the Nuggets would be a big step toward making the postseason.

In Denver's recent win over the Lakers, the victors scored 126 points, led by a surprising 27 from reserve Corey Brewer. The Nuggets are generally a high-scoring team, getting a lot out of transition, steals and offensive rebounds. Three-point shooting isn't their strength, but Denver hit 12 against the Lakers on Dec. 26.

In recent games, the Lakers have struggled to integrate Pau Gasol offensively and to get stops defensively. They'll need an improved effort to take a season-series lead over the Nuggets.

Key matchup......

Lakers Take On Nuggets: Look To Get Back On Track

The Los Angeles Lakers have lost three of their last four games and face the Denver Nuggets on Sunday to start out a difficult week.
By Shahan Ahmed
| Sunday, Jan 6, 2013 | Updated 4:12 PM PST

Dwight Howard #12 of the Los Angeles Lakers is called for a flagrant foul on Kenneth Faried #35 of the Denver Nuggets and was ejected from the game in the third quarter at Pepsi Center on December 26, 2012 in Denver, Colorado. The Nuggets defeated the Lakers 126-114.

On Sunday night, the Los Angeles Lakers welcome the Denver Nuggets to Staples Center for the second time this season. The last time Denver came to town, the Lakers blew out them out of the building 122-103. However, these teams also met in Denver in a shootout the day after Christmas.

In that post-Christmas showdown, the Lakers were beaten with pace and energy in a 126-114 loss. That game snapped the Lakers’ season-long five-game winning streak. The loss in Denver also marked the first time the Lakers lost after Steve Nash returned from a broken leg.

Nuggets beat struggling Lakers 112-105

LOS ANGELES — Ty Lawson had 21 points and 10 assists, Danilo Gallinari scored 20 points and hit a big 3-pointer with 13.8 seconds left, and the Denver Nuggets beat the struggling Los Angeles Lakers 112-105 Sunday night for their fifth win in seven games.

JaVale McGee scored 17 points for the Nuggets, who showed no signs of weariness after a home win over Utah one night earlier. Despite two last-minute 3-pointers by Kobe Bryant, Denver maintained a lead throughout the fourth quarter of its second win in 12 days over the Lakers.

Bryant scored 29 points and Dwight Howard had 14 points and a career high-tying 26 rebounds for the Lakers, who have lost three straight and four of five.

Los Angeles' star-studded roster dropped to 15-18 with another mediocre performance featuring 18 turnovers, intermittent defense and little structured offense down the stretch.

Denver beat the Lakers at Staples Center for just the fifth time in 26 meetings. The Nuggets hung on to their lead with big late baskets from Andre Miller and Lawson, whose layup put Denver ahead by eight points with 1:18 to play.

Bryant's 3-pointer with 36 seconds left cut Denver's lead to 105-102, and Howard emphatically blocked a layup attempt on the Nuggets' next possession – but the ball went straight to Gallinari, who immediately drained a 3-pointer with 13.8 seconds left.

Lakers fall to Nuggets, 112-105, for third straight loss
Kobe Bryant's late heroics fall short as the Lakers can't pull off the comeback. Dwight Howard ties career high with 26 rebounds.

Nuggets 112 - Lakers 105 (end of regulation)

A painful season for Pau Gasol just got worse. JaVale McGee inadvertently hit Gasol in the nose Sunday night at Staples Center, sending the Lakers forward-center to the locker room. Gasol, bleeding profusely, was unable to finish the game.

The Lakers had the same problem, losing a close game to the Denver Nuggets 111-105. After climbing to within three with just 36.2 second left on a Kobe Bryant three-pointer, Dwight Howard blocked Andre Miller's floater.

The loose ball landed right in the lap of Danilo Gallinari who hit a wide-open three-pointer to seal the game. Bryant hit another three to make it interesting but Andre Miller hit a pair of free throws and the Lakers simply ran out of time.

The Lakers shot 46.3% from the field (38-82) while hoisting 30 three-point attempts (making 10). They also got to the line 27 times, making 19 (70.4%).

Kobe Bryant led all scorers with 29, with 18 coming in the fourth quarter. Steve Nash had 10 points and 13 assists. Dwight Howard tied a career high with 26 rebounds to go with his 14 points.

Still it wasn't enough despite the Nuggets shooting a lower percentage from the field (43.6%). The Lakers turned the ball over 18 times to Denver's 10.

Mitch Kupchak says Lakers 'not running on all cylinders'

Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak sits with Mike D'Antoni during a news conference introducing the Lakers coach at the Toyota Sports Center. (Robert Gauthier / Los Angeles Times / November 15, 2012)

The Lakers have struggled to climb above .500 despite tremendous expectations and a $130-million payroll (including luxury taxes).

General Manager Mitch Kupchak told a select group of season-ticket holders Sunday at Staples Center that he was "disappointed" with the Lakers' performance this season.

"If you have a bunch of cylinders, we're not running on all cylinders right now," said Kupchak.

The major question for the organization seems to be the integration of the play of Pau Gasol and Dwight Howard, under the guidance of Coach Mike D'Antoni.

"I think Pau continues to struggle to figure out how he's going to play with his group," said Kupchak. "Our coaches are struggling as well. We're not going to succeed as a team until we figure that out."

Kupchak noted the Lakers also need to improve defensively.

"The players that we have on this team are certainly capable of playing lockdown defense," said the general manager. "Everybody has to look to look at the defense ... just like the offensive side of the ball. Most guys really, really want to score. In order to be a good defensive team, everybody has to really, really want to play defense and defend."

The Lakers are a smart group. I have a gut feeling they know what they are doing and maybe they don't want to give Howard the max, Orlando wouldn't. Maybe they want Pau to ask for a trade. Maybe they even want Kobe to ask for a trade. I had that feeling when they signed D'Antoni. That offense goes against everything the Lakers have believed in for as long as I've watched them.

Total feeling and just mine and my head says different but who knows. I have faith in them whatever.
