Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard nearly fought after Lakers’ New Year’s Day loss, according to report
By Dan Devine | Ball Don't Lie – 1 hour 33 minutes ago

According to one report, things nearly got physical between Kobe and Dwight. (AP/Sue Ogrocki)
So, maybe Kobe Bryant wasn't kidding about that "I'll kick everybody's ass in this locker room" thing.
Early Monday morning — following a 112-105 home loss to the Denver Nuggets, the Los Angeles Lakers' second loss to Denver in less than two weeks, their third straight defeat overall and their fourth in five games — Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News reported that things had nearly gotten physical between a frustrated Bryant and Lakers center Dwight Howard after the Jan. 1 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers that started L.A.'s current skid:
A league source told the Daily News that the Lakers stars got into a heated exchange following a New Year’s Day loss to the 76ers, and Bryant went for a low blow — referencing and agreeing with Shaquille O’Neal’s criticisms of Howard being soft.
Howard was restrained from going at his teammate, according to the source, and there have been rumblings from the center’s camp that he’s been unhappy with Bryant since earlier in the season.

Lakers Lose to Nuggets, 112-105: Danilo Gallinari Sinks Struggling Los Angeles (VIDEO)
By GREG BEACHAM 01/07/13 01:36 AM ET EST

LOS ANGELES -- Ty Lawson had 21 points and 10 assists, Danilo Gallinari scored 20 points and hit a big 3-pointer with 13.8 seconds left, and the Denver Nuggets beat the struggling Los Angeles Lakers 112-105 Sunday night for their fifth win in seven games.

JaVale McGee scored 17 points for the Nuggets, who showed no signs of weariness after a home win over Utah one night earlier. Despite two last-minute 3-pointers by Kobe Bryant, Denver maintained a lead throughout the fourth quarter of its second win in 12 days over the Lakers.

Bryant scored 29 points and Dwight Howard had 14 points and a career high-tying 26 rebounds for the Lakers, who have lost three straight and four of five.

Los Angeles' star-studded roster dropped to 15-18 with another mediocre performance featuring 18 turnovers, intermittent defense and little structured offense down the stretch.

Nuggets hang on late to send Lakers to 3rd straight loss

LOS ANGELES -- Although the Los Angeles Lakers have inspired plenty of strong emotions during their title-laden history, the Denver Nuggets felt something that's been rare in recent decades.

Pity.

Ty Lawson had 21 points and 10 assists, Danilo Gallinari scored 20 points and hit a big 3-pointer with 13.8 seconds left, and the Nuggets beat the struggling Lakers 112-105 Sunday night for their fifth win in seven games.

JaVale McGee scored 17 points for the Nuggets, who showed no signs of weariness after a home win over Utah one night earlier. Despite two last-minute 3-pointers by Kobe Bryant, Denver calmly maintained a lead throughout the fourth quarter of its second win in 12 days over the star-studded Lakers, who aren't exactly putting fear or fury into their opponents.

Staples Center was mostly silent until fans began chanting "We want Phil!" as the Lakers wound down to their third straight loss. Former Lakers coach Phil Jackson was thought to be a candidate to lead the team after Mike Brown was fired early in the season, but Los Angeles went with Mike D'Antoni instead.

Eyeing the PLayoffs? Lakers Lower the Bar

Nothing that happens before Christmas really matters in the NBA, at least based on the favored-nation status that holiday held with the league back in December 2011, when the lockout ended and a truncated season began ‘neath the warm glimmer of tiny lights and pretty ornaments.
The problem with that thinking is, the Los Angeles Lakers still are in trouble.
If we set aside all the hand-wringing and knee-jerk reactions, from both inside and outside the Lakers organization, over the first eight weeks of 2012-13 and cut them slack for the panic firing of coach Mike Brown and botched replacement process that landed Mike D’Antoni while offending backers of Phil Jackson, one hard truth remains: They’re no better now than they were two months ago.
Six games into this ballyhooed season, the Lakers were 2-4. They were both Brown-less and, thanks to injury, Steve Nash-less by then.
Six games from the NBA’s “unofficial” opening-day of Christmas, the Lakers are 2-4. They still look clueless to many for ways to salvage this most disappointing season.
One possibility? Tamp down the expectations, which started out ridiculously, 70-plus victories high prior to training camp before being dampened in November and December. Might as well dampen them further, with only 60 percent of the schedule left to limit any dramatic change.

Lakers' Week 10 in review

Week 10 was unkind to the Lakers as they started 2013 with three straight losses to drop to 15-18 (45.5%).

At the start of the week, the Lakers were actually climbing the standings. That stopped on Jan. 1 with a loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, 103-99. Chris Duhon sat out with back spasms.

Before the game, Sixers Coach Doug Collins called Kobe Bryant a "basketball genius." He also spoke highly of his former player Jodie Meeks.

Steve Nash was impressed by the 76ers starting point guard, calling Jrue Holiday an All-Star. He also noted that the Lakers are "running out of time."

Coach Mike D'Antoni emphasized that his team needed to bring energy to the game every night. Amar'e Stoudemire took a shot at D'Antoni, saying he was never taught how to play defense. D'Antoni said he found the criticism "mind-boggling."

DENVER 112, LAKERS 105: Defense leaves L.A. broken, Dwight Howard to get MRI on shoulder, Pau Gasol hurts nose

For once, it appeared the Lakers played for each other instead of with each other.

Dwight Howard dialed up his intensity despite nursing a sprained rotator cuff on his right shoulder. Pau Gasol increased his aggressiveness, while the team featured him more inside. Metta World Peace suddenly discovered his shooting stroke again. Steve Nash happily played the facilitating role because that's his job. Kobe Bryant happily played the facilitating role because it lessened his workload.

Add up all those ingredients, and it'd seem the Lakers would walk away with a win.

Wrong.

The Lakers' 112-105 loss to the Denver Nuggets on Sunday at Staples Center happened because they didn't address their defensive issues yet again.

As a result, the Lakers (15-18) readily concede these struggles in January could loom large in the big picture as they rest in 11 th place in the Western Conference standings.

"There's a concern," Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni said. "The hole is not too big. Mathematically, we can still make the playoffs. We just have to figure out our identity and play better. We're not playing well."

LOS ANGELES — Jaws — from Nuggets owner Stan Kroenke behind the Denver bench, to the fans under the NBA title banners — dropped.
Did that just happen? Andre Miller drove to the basket, but Dwight Howard volleyball-blocked the shot to the right corner. And the thing landed right in the happy hands of Denver's Danilo Gallinari, who swished the corner 3.
The shot gave Denver a 108-102 lead with 13.8 seconds left. Kobe Bryant, being Kobe Bryant, hit a 3, but Miller calmly hit two free throws and the Nuggets escaped the Staples Center with a 112-105 victory over the Lakers on Sunday.
"You don't have a lot of time to think," Gallinari said, "especially in those situations. I was just ready

Lakers need defense, not chemistry

By JANIS CARR / ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

LOS ANGELES – Dwight Howard thinks the Lakers lack the kind of team chemistry that can be found on winning teams. The kind of chemistry that brings players together. The kind of chemistry that promotes friendships. The kind of chemistry he saw last Friday on the Clippers.
"Those guys on the Clippers team, they really enjoy each other off the court and it shows," he said after that game.

Lakers forward Pau Gasol, left, dunks as Denver Nuggets center JaVale McGee defends dunks during the first half on Sunday at Staples Center
MARK J. TERRILL, AP

Howard said the Lakers need to play "like we like each other." He said that even if Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash and Metta World Peace don't want to hang out off the court, on the court "we have to respect each other and what we bring to the table."
The Lakers' apparent lack of chemistry was evident after Jordan Hill got injured during Friday's loss and he lay on the floor for several seconds before anyone approached.
Whether the Lakers heard Howard or recalled the Hill incident the Lakers showed that sort of team bonding Sunday when taking a spill during the second quarter of Sunday's game, four teammates rushed to help Howard up off the floor.
Coach Mike D'Antoni said before Sunday's game against Denver that the only thing the Lakers need at this point is to play better defense, not chemistry.

The 2008 Celtics played zone. This Lakers team need to do same because of age. If they improve the D. We will win 10 in row. The zone also help with the run game. The NBA is A league of bad outside shooters. Make teams beat you from the outside.

Howard, Gasol, Hill all sidelined for Lakers
By GREG BEACHAM (AP Sports Writer) | The Associated Press – 2 hours 50 minutes ago

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) -- Dwight Howard, Pau Gasol and Jordan Hill all will miss the Los Angeles Lakers' upcoming road trip with injuries, leaving the struggling club without its top three big men indefinitely.

Howard has a torn labrum in his right shoulder, and Gasol has a concussion after taking an elbow in the face late in Sunday night's loss to Denver. Hill, a key backup to both starting big men, has a right hip injury.

The three injuries are the latest blows for the Lakers (15-18), who still haven't meshed despite a star-studded roster, a bulging payroll and an early-season coaching change. Los Angeles has lost three straight and four of five since beating the Knicks on Christmas, falling to 11th place in the Western Conference.

''The NBA is unforgiving, and nobody is feeling sorry for us,'' Los Angeles coach Mike D'Antoni said. ''There's 29 other teams that are happy, and we've got to do the best we can do. It's kind of weird coming to work thinking you have three centers, and all three of them are hurt on the same day.''

Dwight Howard, Pau Gasol out

Updated: January 7, 2013, 8:46 PM ET
By Dave McMenamin | ESPNLosAngeles.com

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- If the Los Angeles Lakers are going to crawl out of the hole they've dug for themselves with their current three-game losing streak, they'll have to do it without their All-Star big men -- center Dwight Howard and forward Pau Gasol -- who are both out indefinitely with injuries, the team announced Monday.

Howard is sidelined with a torn labrum in his right shoulder while Gasol has a concussion.

"It shouldn't keep me out for awhile, but to make sure that I'm cautious, to make sure that I'm healthy that's the most important thing," Howard told reporters at the Lakers practice facility after undergoing an MRI that revealed the tear earlier on Monday.

Howard was injured in the second half of the Lakers' 107-102 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday when he got his arms tangled up with Caron Butler. He played through the injury in Sunday's 112-105 loss to the Denver Nuggets and tied a career high with 26 rebounds and added 14 points and four blocks in 41 minutes of playing time despite the pain. But he had his shoulder wrapped heavily in ice after the game.

"That was a pretty good effort," Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni said of Howard on Monday. "I told him he'd have about 40 (rebounds) if he had both arms."

Magic Johnson's Twitter rant on the Los Angeles Lakers
USA TODAY Sports5:44p.m. EST January 7, 2013

There's plenty of drama coming out of the Los Angeles Lakers camp these days and one of the team's all-time great former players, Magic Johnson, has had no problem giving his opinions on the situation.

INJURY WOES: Lakers get bad news on Howard, Gasol

FIGHT? WHAT FIGHT?: Kobe posts funny photo of him and Howard

On Monday, Johnson let loose on his Twitter account, @MagicJohnson, about his thoughts on the Lakers:

As @Lakers fans we demand and expect more once you put that ( a t ) Lakers Purple & Gold uniform on!

All 12 @Lakers players need to understand what it means to be a member of the @Lakers.

Above everything else the @Lakers players need to start having fun on the court!

Coach D'Antoni has to start teaching better pick & roll defense and better defensive rotations...He also has to make He also has to make sure that every @Lakers players role is defined.

The @Lakers big men have to stop giving up easy offensive rebounds...the perimeter players have to start getting back on defense to stop the fast breaks of their opponents!

. AT MettaWorldPeace has to stop making great quotes and start playing great defense... @ JMeeks20 has to start making better shot selections.

Lakers: Week 11 predictions

By Eric Pincus

January 7, 2013, 1:00 p.m.

The Lakers went winless through Week 10, falling to 15-18 on the season. The Portland Trail Blazers are currently in eighth place in the Western Conference at 18-15. The minimum goal for the Lakers is to make up those three games just to get into the postseason.

With three straight losses, the Lakers are now six losses behind the cumulative predictions for weeks 1-10, and the week ahead is extremely difficult. The season may get uglier for the Lakers before (or if) it gets better.

Jan. 8 at Houston Rockets

The Rockets are the highest-scoring team in the league at 106.2 points per game. The Lakers have had problems playing defense. That's not a great combination.

Houston is 20-14, winners of four straight. James Harden is averaging 26.4 points a game. Jeremy Lin and Chandler Parsons are difficult players to deal with defensively.

Five key questions for the Lakers

By Arash Markazi

LOS ANGELES – As if the Los Angeles Lakers nightmarish season needed any more drama, Monday provided perhaps the most twists and turns since the Lakers’ coaching search ended with a faxed contract to Mike D’Antoni and a now infamous phone call to Phil Jackson in the middle of the night.

In one 169-word press release the Lakers announced that Dwight Howard, Pau Gasol and Jordan Hill were all injured in Sunday night’s loss to the Denver Nuggets. Howard suffered a torn labrum, Gasol suffered a concussion and Hill suffered an injury to his right hip. Each of them is out indefinitely.

If you’re keeping track at home, that’s basically everyone on the team taller than 6-foot-9. That’s not exactly the kind of news that a 15-18 team looking to turn around its season needs to hear.

So where do the Lakers go from here?

Here are five pressing questions facing this team.

1. What if Dwight Howard is never fully healthy this season, what does that mean for the Lakers and for his future in L.A.?
