Earl Clark has 'phenomenal' showing for Lakers
So says Coach Mike D'Antoni after Clark has 22 points, 13 rebounds against Spurs, playing in the absence of Dwight Howard, Pau Gasol and Jordan Hill.

By Mike Bresnahan

January 9, 2013, 10:10 p.m.

SAN ANTONIO — A throw-in from the Dwight Howard trade finally threw his weight around.

Earl Clark had his first good game with the Lakers and maybe the only memorable one of his four-year NBA career, setting personal bests with 22 points and 13 rebounds in a 108-105 loss Wednesday to the San Antonio Spurs.

He was active and athletic, things the Lakers have missed throughout the season, and scored more points in one game than he had all season (14).

It was only the second career double-double for the former Phoenix Suns lottery pick (14th overall, Louisville, 2009) and it drew notice in the locker room.

"Don't be late for the bus," assistant coach Dan D'Antoni yelled to him after seeing a pool of reporters converging around his locker.

Lakers defense is offensive

By Eric Pincus

January 10, 2013, 12:00 p.m.

The Lakers are the only team with a losing record in the league to have scored more points this season than they've given up.

It's not much of a consolation prize: The Lakers are in 10th place in the Western Conference at 15-20, 4 1/2 games behind the Portland Trail Blazers. The Lakers are averaging 103.2 points per game while giving up 101.7, a difference of 1.5 points.

Where the Lakers are primarily lacking is on defense. Only four teams allow more points a game (Charlotte Bobcats, Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks and Sacramento Kings).

The Lakers shoot a solid 45.4% from the field (11th overall) but they've fallen to 18th in field goal defense (45.1%). Free-throw shooting remains an issue as the Lakers at 69.2% are better than just the Denver Nuggets (67.7%).

Their opponents average 23.6 assists per game, making the Lakers the second-worst team in the league behind the Charlotte Bobcats (25.5).

Lakers turmoil continues; could they miss the playoffs?

Posted by Cindy Boren on January 10, 2013 at 11:36 am

The Lakers’ season, in a one painful photo. (Eric Gay / AP)

Every time it looks as if the Los Angeles Lakers are about to find their footing and make a nice little run that lifts them into contention for a playoff berth, they go and lose another game.
That happened for the fifth straight time Wednesday night when the hobbled would-be champions were forced to start Robert Sacre from the Developmental League at center and fell 108-105 to the Spurs in San Antonio. With Pau Gasol out with a concussion and Dwight Howard recovering from a shoulder injury, the Lakers made a run at the Spurs, but couldn’t tie the score twice in the final seconds.
“We’ve lost five games in a row; it’s pretty self-explanatory,” Kobe Bryant, who had 27, said. “We still have to straighten some things out on the defensive end, but I feel like we competed.”

Popovich defends D'Antoni's defense

SAN ANTONIO -- Mike D'Antoni is well aware of his sketchy reputation as a coach that he either won't or, worse yet, can't get his teams to play defense.

"Maybe he can put the 'D' back in my name," D'Antoni said of Dwight Howard at his introductory news conference after being hired by the Los Angeles Lakers in November. "That would be nice. Some people have been taking that out."

Howard, the former three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year, hasn't changed that reputation for D'Antoni just yet.

So far the proof is in the numbers regarding the Lakers' defensive performance with D'Antoni in charge. In five games with Mike Brown this season, the Lakers allowed their opponents to score 98.8 points per game. In five games with Bernie Bickerstaff, opponents averaged 92.2 points. In 24 games with D'Antoni, opposing teams are putting up a whopping 104.0 points per game.

Lessons of the 24-second shot clock

GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS, HOUSTON ROCKETS, LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS, LOS ANGELES LAKERS, PHILADELPHIA 76ERS, PHOENIX SUNS, ROB MAHONEY, SAN ANTONIO SPURS | COMMENTS

Every NBA offense must function within the confines of the 24-second clock. (John W. McDonough/SI)

By Rob Mahoney

There are innumerable variables to account for when it comes to analyzing basketball performance. But among those factors is a single, static force that lingers in the background of every single offensive possession, subtly dictating its terms: the shot clock. NBA teams have 24 seconds at a time to go about their scoring business, and all of their primary actions are designed to generate a shot within that designated span. Those on the court are taught to be fully aware of the clock, and fully cognizant of how its marching countdown will bring the walls in around their offensive efforts.

......

When it comes to this specific area of offensive performance, two teams stand well above the rest of the field: the Lakers (.522 eFG% in the last four seconds of the shot clock) and the Heat (.511). Neither stands as all that much of a surprise, given that both teams’ offenses revolve around some of the best individual shot creators in the game. In this regard, Bryant is as good as would be expected: his individual eFG% at the end of the clock is .568, which is an incredible mark when we also consider that defenses expect him to take those very shots. Metta World Peace (.560) and Steve Nash (.667) also help anchor the Lakers’ high overall percentage, largely by way of spot-up three-point shooting after other offensive options break down.

BONSIGNORE: The Lakers should trade Dwight Howard for Dirk Nowitzki

It's time for the Lakers to think outside the box, deal for Dallas star Nowitzki and reunite him with Nash

It might be time for the Lakers to reunite Dirk Nowitzki with Steve Nash. (Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images)
Dirk Nowitzki laid his 7-foot, 34-year-old body across the floor of the Dallas Mavericks locker room Wednesday at Staples Center and grimaced as he went through his pregame stretching routine.

In an hour or so his lowly, fourth-place Mavericks would take the floor against the Clippers, the best team in the NBA, and the likelihood of another loss pushing the Mavs further and further away from the playoffs seemed as imminent as Dallas owner Mark Cuban being fined by the NBA for criticizing the league's referees.

Sure enough, commissioner David Stern slapped Cuban for fifty grand this week after Cuban made a disparaging tweet about NBA refs, and considering Cuban is now in $1.5 million deep with Stern it's a pretty good bet it won't be the last time Stern shakes him down for opening his mouth too wide.

As far as Cuban's Mavericks, they just keep plodding along on a miserable trip to nowhere, taking a 13-22 record into their game against the Clippers and plummeting all the way to the 12th spot in the Western Conference standings.

If the season ended today, Dallas would be out of the postseason.

Dirk Nowitzki laughs at scenario of him being traded to the Lakers

It’s strange to imagine the season when Dirk Nowitzki no longer wears a Mavericks jersey, the only uniform he has donned during his 15 NBA seasons.

But what is even more bizarre is the possibility of seeing Nowitzki wearing another team’s colors. It only seems right that the face of the Dallas franchise finishes his professional career with the team he led to its only league title.

A Wednesday column in the Los Angeles Daily News suggests otherwise.

According to the piece written by Vincent Bonsignore, Nowitzki was asked Wednesday about the possibility of joining his good friend Steve Nash as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers.

“I mean honestly, I’d never allow myself to even think about something like that,” Nowitzki said, laughing.

Los Angeles Lakers struggle, provide Phoenix Suns fans some relief in dismal season

By Dave King on Jan 10, 12:35p

Cary Edmondson-US PRESSWIRE
As much as the Phoenix Suns are struggling, the Lakers are helping make the ride a bit easier. If the Lakers miss the playoffs, the Suns will gladly take their lottery pick off their hands.

Last summer, the Phoenix Suns' President of Basketball Operations Lon Babby originally had no intention to trade Steve Nash to a rival team like the Lakers. After some haggling and googly eyes from the Candian wunderkind, he and Managing Partner Robert Sarver eventually relented, in exchange for what appeared to be a bevy of low draft picks.

No lottery protection in 2013

Lost in the despair of such a depressing move was what turned out to be a stroke of genius: the Suns insisted on NO LOTTERY PROTECTION on the 2013 pick. (confirmed once again today by Lon Babby directly to me)

Back then, it didn't matter. The Lakers were go

What Happened Last Night: The Lakers Showed Some Life, But Kept On Losing
by Glenn Davis | 10:01 am, January 10th, 2013

As predicted yesterday, basketball-heavy night = basketball-heavy morning roundup post. If you’re not much of a basketball fan, you’ve been warned. For the rest of you, let’s get down to business.

The Lakers didn’t go down easily, at least.
And they could have. they were down 17 in the third quarter to the Spurs last night. Later, they trailed by 16 with seven minutes to go in the game. But despite that deficit, and despite once again playing without their top three frontcourt options, the Lakers managed to cut the deficit to three and get the ball with 10 seconds left. And then… well, they couldn’t close the deal, missing on a pair of threes (neither of which was a particularly good look) on their final possession, losing 108-105 and falling to 15-20 on the season.

The Cursed Season: Lakers on the Brink

By C.A. Clark on Jan 10, 7:00a 226

Soobum Im-USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Lakers have plenty of problems, but the most serious problem of all is that they just can not catch a break. Now, even if their luck changes, it may be too late.

Sometimes in life, a good idea just doesn't pan out the way you want it to. Good ideas, and the people who have them, fail all the time in this mad world we live in. Perhaps the idea is seemingly strong, but in actuality, the idea has a fatal flaw that causes failure. The idea can truly be a good one, only to be derailed by a poor strategy of implementation or by poor execution. But quite often, the cause of a good idea's failure is not so understandable. Sometimes, a good idea is foiled not by poor implementation, not by foolish mistakes, but instead because of elements that operate outside the boundaries of that which you can hope to control. You train for a marathon only to break your leg. You start a new business which is destroyed by a natural disaster. Circumstance ... luck ... fate ... destiny, call it whatever you want. You don't need it to be on your side, necessarily, but no matter what you pursue, you need the elements outside of your control to at the very least not constantly fall against you.
