Defense… It’s been an elusive concept for the Lakers this season. The addition of Earl Clark to the starting lineup while Pau recovers and moving Kobe to ball hawking the lead guard has given the team a more actively engaged defensive unit.

Superb two-way game by Kobe Bryant, who set the tone on both ends in the Lakers 104-88 win over the Bucks. He was assigned Brandon Jennings and locked him down to 4-14 shooting and a -22. Offensively, he found his bigman with frequency and scored from all over the court.

“It starts on the defensive end,” said Kobe, who also had 31 points and 6 assists. “We did a much better job tonight being physical and making our presence felt. That’s where we have to hang our hats.”

Pretty amazing that he’s locking down youngin’s and dropping 31 and 6.

“It’s the ice baths that I take,” he said. “I call them the Tub of Youth.”

Coach D’Antoni also got some excellent D from Earl Clark, who took on the assignment of Monte Ellis, while the Lakers hid Nash on the Bucks SF spot. Never underestimate the importance of defensive versatility. The Lakers held the Bucks to 36% shooting on the night. Keeping a team in the 80s scoring-wise hasn’t happened a lot lately.

The Lakers should be a much, much better team defensively than they have shown. Perhaps, now they are finally buying into that approach.

Kobe -- -- “It’s will,” Kobe said. “I just don’t want to lose. You just refuse to lose. Refuse to go down. When you except physically that you’re going to be hurting after the game. When you accept the aches and pains that go along with it, it makes it easy to push through it.” D’Antoni has realized that Kobe is quite a bit more engaged defensively when he’s on the ball. So, he’s going to put him into a stopper role. “It’s imperative that he does that. He helps our defense so much,” D’Antoni said. He mentioned he will try to watch Kobe’s minutes. Normally, you would worry about the wear, but right now the Lakers must get wins. Kobe’s shift in energy to the defensive end may also be having an effect offensively. D’Antoni suggested as much. Kobe has been a bit more measured offensively and looking for others in the past couple games. It’s just two games, but keep an eye out on whether he sticks to this formula. D’Antoni mentioned it and Kobe said he has to rely on his teammates more in this role. He had another flawless first half, mixing in 16 points on 9 shots and 6 assists without a turnover. He was finding Dwight for easy ones. “We’re starting to get a better connection,” Kobe said of the chemistry with the bigman. The ball movement today resulted in some better attempts from three for both Kobe and Nash. Some wide open looks a few times. Nice effort from Kobe hitting the floor, also, for loose balls (looked like he scraped his hand pretty good on one of them). “To take the challenge to defend the best offensive player on our opponents, it speaks volumes. He’s our lead and as he goes, we go,” Jamison said. The Stats: He scored 31 points on 12-19 shooting (3-5 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 6 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 37 minutes. He was a +23. The Action: He grabbed a board and found Howard for the layup under the hoop. He jump passed from three to Dwight for a dunk next time down. He spun in the post, Metta threw the inbounds to where Kobe was spinning and Kobe scored layup off it. He stopped running in transition and Nash’s pass went out of bounds. He backdoored his man, took the lob from Nash and scored. He posted up and hit the baseline turnaround. He posted up Ellis and drew FTs (and a tech on him), he made both. He attacked baseline and kicked to Morris for three. He hit Dwight under the hoop for FTs. He missed a transition three, layup the other way (this team can’t take those without getting burned...teams just run it right back down on us). He drew the D and found Jamison for three. He spotted Dwight in the lane for a layup. He choked a lefty jumphook at the front of the rim. He busted out off the Jamison deflection, Antawn saved it back inbounds to him and Kobe dunked it. Great ball denial out of a timeout to disrupt the play that was supposed to go to Jennings and we got a stop. He swished a long wing jumper. He popped out behind a screen and hit the wing jumper. He cut to the middle of the paint, took the pass and hit the fade. He had 16 points on 7-9 shooting and 6 assists with no turnovers. Second Half: Bad foul on Jennings, challenging and fouling on the three (4-point play). He held the ball over the smaller Ellis and hit the sideline three to get some back. He deflected a pass and it led to a Clark/Metta breakaway. His layup was blocked at the rim. He choked a layup in transition, uggh (not sure how he DFished that one). He backed it out, attacked, pulled up from 18 feet an airballed. He didn’t hit rim on a tough, one-footed chuck from three trying to beat the shotclock. He drew FTs on a sideline swing through, he made both. He stuck a pull-up 21-footer from the wing on iso at the end of the quarter. He sank the corner three off the Clark kickout. He posted up, spun away from the double team and hit the crazy turnaround while falling down (looked like he wanted the push foul on that). He swished a wide open three from the top of the arc (off Nash penetration initially). He missed a three straight away a couple minutes later.

Howard -- -- Huge numbers...31, 16 and 4...that’s what we need to see a little more of. It takes execution, not Dwight bullying his way to points. “This should be average for him. This should be nothing for him with how good he can be,” Nash said. He wants to get the ball Dwight where it’s too late for opponents to recover to Dwight. That didn’t always happen, but it did a lot tonight. Kobe and Nash were setting him up for easy ones around the rim from the start. No chance to foul him. Fewer chances for turnovers. Dwight was doing a good job of making himself available and did a great job finishing. “We just need him to come out and bring the energy on both ends of the floor,” Jamison said. He said the team can’t make excuses. Defensively, of course, he’s the anchor, blocking 4 shots, goaltending a couple and challenging others. The Lakers were able to get set defensively and that makes all the difference in the world for this team. “We’re communicating more,” Dwight said, not just talking but “getting on each other and holding each other accountable.” He mentioned “staying focused and staying humble.” The Stats: He scored 31 points on 14-18 shooting (3-8 from the line) to go with 16 boards (3 offensive), 4 blocks, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 40 minutes. He was a +24. The Action: He scored a layup off the Kobe feed to start the game. He dunked off the Kobe jump pass from the three line next time down. He was fouled posting up next time down and made both FTs. He blocked Ellis’s drive. He was called for three seconds. Clark attacked and found Dwight for FTs in the middle of the paint, he missed both. He scored a layup off the lob from Metta. Nice rotation to eat up a shot behind Nash on help D. His man flopped and Dwight hammered down the two-handed post jam. He was hacked when Kobe set him up under the hoop, he missed both FTs. He scored a layup with his left cutting off Kobe. He missed a jumphook in the middle of the lane. He dunked off the screen-roll with Nash. He flagged a Nash bounce pass in transition and hit the jumphook. Bad goaltend (his second, this one not close). He had 16 points on 7-8 shooting (2-6 from the line) to go with 7 boards and 3 blocks.Second Half: He scored an And-1 at the front of the rim off the Nash bounce pass, he made the FT. He banked the short jumphook off the Clark feed. He was called for a charge on the roll. He was blocked on a post up. He scored an easy putback off the Nash drive. He missed a jumphook in the paint. He spun, grabbed a short lob and dunked it. His man tried to pull the chair, Dwight kept his dribble and threw down the two-handed dunk. He attacked the paint from the three line and ran over a man (who had his feet in the restricted circle), he made the layup but missed the FT. He put back in a Nash missed three while still in the air. He missed a short turnaround on the screen-roll, just got tapped.

Nash -- -- He and Kobe combined for 15 first half assists, the ball moving well especially inside to Dwight in scoring position. Love seeing that versus tons of kickouts for threes. Speaking of which, it was just not his night shooting wise behind the arc. He was wide open on them, too, but missed every one of them. Defensively, we put Clark on Ellis and Kobe on Jennings, which mean Nash had to cover the SF spot. That resulted in some banging in the paint on occasion and the Lakers sending some help there. But it worked. The Bucks struggled to get any flow as we took them out of what they were used to doing. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-10 shooting (0-4 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 11 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a +17. The Action: He fumbled a drive, got it back and was blocked on a turnaround jumper, but we got it back. He lobbed to Kobe cutting backdoor for the layup. He made a tech FT. He attacked and missed a lefty runner. He missed a wide open wing three. He attacked and hit Jamison for three. He probed off the Dwight screen and hit the runner. He hit Dwight on the screen-roll for a dunk. He attacked the paint and flipped a layup in over a big. Sweet bounce pass in transition to Dwight who was able to hit the short one off it. He had 5 points and 9 assists at the half. Second Half: He attacked, drew the D and bounced to Dwight for the And-1 at the front of the rim. He got blindsided and gave up a dunk on the steal. He threw a pass away on the break. He missed a three on the screen-roll. He missed another wide open three, uggh. He made a tech FT. He attacked the paint, missed the layup, but Dwight cleaned up the dribble penetration easily (really wish our bench PGs could get to the rim when Dwight is on the floor and Nash rests). He sank an elbow fade in the lane. He missed another wide open sideline three (just not his night).

Peace -- -- Again, he seemed a bit more in control offensively. Some of the transition threes he needs to be careful with. We just can’t defend very well when we miss on those. Defensively, I love seeing the Kobe, Metta, Clark, Dwight unit. That’s a versatile, athletic bunch. If you need one stop at the end of the game, you might throw Morris in that bunch and dig in. Hopefully, we continue to develop chemistry there. Quick complaint again: Metta, what’s up with not giving Nash the ball after you get a rebound and try to take it up court? He’s passing to you. Kind of driving me nuts now. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-10 shooting (2-6 from three) to go with 6 boards, 3 assists, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 33 minutes. He was a +27. The Action: He sank a wing three in transition. Sweet inbounds pass behind Kobe’s man, threaded it perfectly on the spin and cut, for a layup. He drained another sideline three in transition next time down. He lobbed to Dwight in early offense for the layup. He missed a sideline three in early offense. He grabbed a board, didn’t give it up to Nash and missed the transition three (score the other way for the Bucks). He blocked a man under the hoop to save a bucket. He took the kickout, let a man fly by and moved in for a shorter baseline jumper. He had 8 points on 3-6 shooting. Second Half: He filled the lane on the break and Clark found him for the layup. He missed a wing three. He sank a step-back corner jumper with the shotclock low. He missed a challenged midrange jumper from the wing. He missed a corner three.

Clark -- -- In at the starting PF, but starting the game guarding the much smaller guard, Ellis, with Kobe on Jennings. Got to like having defensive versatility around Steve Nash. “He’s long, but when he contests a shot, the shot’s not easy,” D’Antoni said. Asked whether he’d continue to experiment with Clark’s defensive versatility, he said “for sure.” Ellis ended up with 17 points on 6-16 shooting and never really got on track against the 6-10 Earl. Clark said the defensive communication was much better today. The rebounding struggled a bit at times (we need to team rebound better when Clark is pushed out on the perimeter with the assignment). Some good rebounding late in the game by him, however. Poor offensive game from Clark as his shot wasn’t there. He did move the ball well again and finished with 4 assists. If he’s not hitting shots, the ability to quickly move it or attack on the dribble and find someone open can be just as effective. No matter what he does on offense, that defensive mobility from a bigman more than makes up for it. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-7 shooting to go with 9 boards, 4 assists, 1 block and 4 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He missed an open elbow jumper to start. Nice challenge on Metta’s man on a switch to get a miss. He attacked and fed to Dwight for FTs. He missed an 18-footer. Second Half: He missed a wing jumper to start the half. He quickly hit Dwight under the hoop for an easy score. He swiped a pass, pushed it up and bounced to Metta on the break for a layup. He crashed the glass and put back down a missed MWP three. He attacked the press and hit Kobe for the open three. He swung it to Kobe for three on a Nash kickout. He crossed over, pulled up and banked in the elbow jumper unintentionally. He battled for an offensive board, then powered up a reverse layup. He missed a pull-up jumper, wide left.

Morris -- -- Again, in as the backup SG, which shows D’Antoni’s putting defense over offense right now. That’s especially true when we get the 1-6 from Darius and too many misses around the rim. “It all comes down to defense,” Duhon said. “When that second unit continues to play with a lot of energy defensively that will lead to easier opportunities for us on the offensive end.” They still need some sort of star power on the offensive end. Otherwise they flounder and Morris ends up in OC mode. When Pau comes back, hopefully, that shores up some of those second unit minutes. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-6 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 2 assists and 3 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He blew a 2-on-1 break by not getting it back to Kobe and bricking the finish. He swished a three in front of the Laker bench on the Kobe kickout. He attacked the lane but couldn’t finish at the rim. He missed a wing three. He had 3 points on 1-4 shooting. Second Half: He missed a corner three in early offense. He wasn’t close on a layup attempt in transition (got to come closer than that). Nice D on Jennings to stop a drive, then he switched on the other guard to challenge a shot (then got stepped on after falling to the floor).

Jamison -- -- He stole a few minutes from Clark tonight with some early success from three. Jamison had one of the highlight plays of the game, deflecting a pass, tracking it down at midcourt and saving it to a Kobe for the breakaway score. Love seeing our vets like Kobe and Jamison getting in on the hustle plays. Nearly all of Jamison’s scoring was in the first half tonight with those three threes. He missed a few chippies around the rim. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 3-8 shooting (3-6 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He grabbed a Sacre miss, then choked the 3-footer. He sank a much-needed wing three. He sank an open wing three when Kobe spotted him. He swished a corner three on a Nash kickout out of a timeout. He deflected a pass, tracked it down and saved it inbounds to a streaking Kobe for the dunk. He missed his first three on a swing pass from Nash. He missed a corner three next time down on another swing pass (might be getting tired...long stint). He had 9 points on 3-6 shooting in 17 minutes. Second Half: He missed a three in transition (led to FTs the other way). He missed a leaner in the paint (looked like he could have lobbed to Dwight). Quick attack from the top of the key and he drew FTs on the layup, he made one. He didn’t post feed Metta who had Ellis on him (shotclock violation eventually).

Duhon -- -- “Guys are really buying in on the defensive end,” Duhon said. He said that’s what it all comes down to. “This has to be our identity.” He’s right and it’s a major shift in thinking for the team and D’Antoni. They wanted to throttle up the scoring, but have been getting ripped apart on the other end. It sounds like Blake will be reevaluated again in a week, so Duhon’s role with the second unit is still secure. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-5 shooting from three to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 steal and no fouls in 15 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He missed a corner three. He wasn’t close on his next one from the same spot shortly later. Second Half: Nice job staying on his feet on the close out and he forced a travel call. He sank one of his long wide open threes straight away. He nearly stole an inbounds and chucked it toward the hoop, but we could recover it. He lobbed to Dwight (short, but recovered) for a dunk. He missed a wing three.

Meeks -- -- He finally got in with under a couple minutes left with garbage time well in hand. Morris again had the defensive assignment, just showing what we are thinking as a team right now. The Stats: He didn’t shoot or score and had 1 turnover in 2 minutes. He had a +/- of 0. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He threw a pass away, not close to his target, Sacre.

Sacre -- -- He shot blanks offensively from the floor and line. He was put into a bad situation in his first rotation with no star power in that lineup. So the -9 in 3 minutes in the first half was more on D’Antoni than that bench. Time for him to hit a few of those chippies he’s been missing lately. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting (0-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards and 2 fouls in 8 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He was blocked on a layup on one end, then gave up an And-1 on the other. Good effort to crash the glass on Morris’s drive and he earned FTs, he then missed both, uggh. Second Half: Nothing to report.

D’Antoni -- -- Same starting lineup as last time with Pau still not cleared. The speedy Bucks backcourt of Ellis and Jennings was covered by Kobe on Jennings and Clark on Ellis. Nash on the bigger Mbah a Moute... They pulled out to an early 14-4 lead, forcing a Bucks timeout... He sat Clark and Metta for Morris and Jamison up by 12... He sat Dwight for Sacre up 26-15 with 3:25 left... He sat Nash for Duhon... So Kobe, Dwight, Nash and MWP all on the bench at the same time... The 11-point lead was trimmed down to 2 with just 1 minute left. You could see this coming with that awful rotation... The Lakers led 29-27 after the quarter... He started a Dwight, Jamison, Clark, Kobe, Duhon unit... He sat Clark for MWP shortly after he picked up his second foul... The Lakers lost their lead briefly, then it was back and forth most of the quarter... A timeout came with 3 minutes left when the Lakers went up by 3... Solid close to the half as Kobe started hitting a series of jumpers and the D got some stops... The Lakers led 57-50 at the half. They shot 55% (23-42, 6-14 3PT, 5-11 FT). The Bucks shot 40% (20-50, 5-16 3PT, 5-11 FT). The Lakers were out rebounded 11-3 on the offensive glass... Up 7, he sat MWP for Jamison... He sat Clark for Morris up 4... Up 5, Duhon for Nash and Clark for Dwight. So Sacre, Jamison, Kobe, Morris, Duhon lineup with 3 minutes left. Keeping Kobe in allowed them to keep the lead this time... The Lakers led 79-73 heading into the fourth... He started a Dwight, Jamison, MWP, Morris, Duhon unit... They forced a timeout after extending the lead to 13 points... Up 11, he sat Duhon for Nash with 7 minutes left. Then Kobe and Clark for Morris and Jamison... Up big with impact players in, he sat Kobe for Morris with a couple minutes left... Then closed with some garbage time... The Bucks had 21 offensive boards, but shot just 35.8%. Just 10 Laker turnovers that the Bucks only converted into 2 points. That kept the shot attempts down despite the offensive boards...

2 solid victories to stop the bleeding. Hopefully a win against Miami on Thursday will provide some needed momentum as they head on the road.

Another good game. Two in a row. can't wait to see how the Lakers play against the Heat. I hope they put up a great effort. A win would be nice , but I'll settle for a hard fought game.Lakers just have to make the playoffs. They will get it together in time to win it all. Another great write up DB. Thank you.

Great work as usual DB, when I heard the defensive match ups this afternoon, I wondered If I had enough Patron in the house, but I must say, Dan Tanna's defensive assignments worked out well, Amazing that we got away with Nash on Mbah a Moute

Thanks DB!

Rambis shares that when the Lakers are attacking defensively from Kkbe to Clark, rebounding will an issue.

Heat - Lakers Matchups?
LBJ - Clark, World Peace
DWade - Kobe, Clark
Chalmers - Nash
Bosh - World Peace, Clark
Perkins - D12

Thanks again DB! Excellent game. As much criticism as MDA's taken, I like how he's kept an open mind to players like Clark and Morris when it comes to mobility on defense. I really like this starting lineup with Clark in it.

Interesting comments on Metta. He brings frustration to both teams. I like seeing him throttled down to 10 shots. He's there for defense and for squaring up before he shoots from outside. If Metta can just let Nash play PG when he brings it up instead of Mettaball we'll be that much better.

I'm liking the balance on both sides lately. This defense seems tons better with Kobe defending the primary ball handler and Clark in the starting lineup. I also really like how Kobe, Dwight and Nash have been interacting on offense lately. Fantastic night; D12 and Kobe playing with this kind of efficiency and teamwork, with Nash setting up plays, is fun to watch.

This team is much better when Kobe focuses on defense, he is absolutely disruptive. Clark is a nice addition, even without gaudy stats he is a great compliment to the starting unit. I'd still like to see less 3s as they are an Achilles heel rather than a strength.

We'll catch a break (finally) be playing Miami on the second leg of a back-to-back. Though Miami has been in a rut of late, they are a better measuring stick than either the Cavs or Bucks.

It's still amazing how nobody notices Duhon's horrendous defensive IQ and positioning.

Ice baths are absolute torture. I don't know how Kobe does it. Maybe a whole game's worth of exertion and body heat allows him to cope with it? Maybe he views it as his secret to longevity, and price to pay for that? Still...I recommend everybody try it at least once.

It's to bad Clark did not get the attention earlier in the season; or he would have given some consideration for MIP. yes that might be stretching with his stats... but his defense the last few games have been superb.. if he can have a Impact on the Heat game then I might buy a Clark jersey.

Seriously. My favorite play of the game was a corner three from Kobe on Ellis. He didn't even bring the ball down. Kept it over his head like he was going to pass and *swish*. Greatness personified.

All of this being said, putting Kobe as an on ball defender forces him to distribute more on the offensive end to conserve energy. With Nash, Howard, and Pau, Kobe should be racking in the assists while jacking up less shots.

I just hope this doesn't wear him down too much. 34 year old legs with that many miles can't guard the Westbrook's of the league too long.

I like how Clark contributes. He doesn't pretend to be flashy, he doesn't defer, he just keeps everything moving. Kinda like a poor man's version of Lamar Odom. Props to him.

D12 is starting to get his explosiveness back. That throwdown off the Kobe pass from the 3 pt arc was rim-rattling.

If Kobe and D12 are that efficient -- 26/37 for 62 pts, things are looking up.

Nice win. Hope we get another one against Heat.

i think we can beat the Heat. Hell if the Wizards can, We can . We just need to make the D rock solid and our offense will take care of itself.
