Roku 3 is pretty sweet. Besides the usual Netflix, Amazon streaming, etc., I really use the hell out of the Plex app. There are Plex plugins for things like South Park, Daily show, etc, plus all of the awesomeness you get from streaming your own library. This past season I also streamed MLB games through the official app. To get around local blackouts, I ran the Roku through my VPN, which was set out of market.

Definitely recommend the Roku, especially as cheap as it is.

Wait.
So if you use Roku through VPN then you can just get all the Laker games??????

Yeah, I set up the VPN on my computer, and let the Roku pass through the connection. For Dodgers games, I just turned my VPN on to something like Austin, TX, and viola, no more blackout. League pass should work the same way.

Genius.

So has anyone successfully gotten national TV broadcast to show on their Roku using VPN?

UPDATE: I just bought the Roku 3 for 70 bucks thanks to this thread's info!
Hope I can watch NBA League Pass on it via VPN.

DuncanIdaho hooked us up for sure, thanks so much

So what do you think about the other apps? I've been using Plex non stop and had to get a SD Card to hold all the stuff I'm ripping from the interwebs!!!!

I've decided to keep my cable though, no substitute for my morning coffee and local news traffic report - and my late night spank session to Rachel Maddow

Don't get too excited, its NBA League pass free weekend, so basically all the games were available for viewing.

Have you tried using a VPN service? NBA/MLB/etc go by your IP address, and if it thinks your Roku is located in another state (or country), you should be okay.

You can do this through your router (sometimes), but if you don't have a compatible router, you can do it with your PC, as long as you have both a wireless and a wired connection (two different wireless connections probably works too). Here's a quick and dirty way to do it. There are other ways too.

1) Connect to your router with your wireless connection
2) Set up a new VPN connection in windows. Put in all of the information for your VPN provider (I use Vypyrvpn). Share this connection (allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection).
3a) Start the VPN
3b) connect your computer to the Roku with the cable.
4) set up your Roku to use the wired internet connection
5) watch Lakers and profit

These are basically the exact steps I used to watch the Dodgers all season long with the Roku MLB.tv app

I'm using Purevpn with Internet sharing from OSX Maverick.
When I enter the NBA League Pass (Singapore account) info it doesn't work, presumably because it is an international account.
Tells me that the login has failed.

I think Roku may not work with International League Pass.
International League Pass seems to work differently.

Did you use VPN to bypass only the local broadcast restrictions?

Oh MLB.
That's a different story.
I hear NBA League Pass is the worst.

I filed a dispute with PayPal and emailed NBA League Pass support.
I will be canceling.
Will probably get cable TV although I hate having all those channels I don't want wasting my family's time.

MLB is the absolute best pro sport in the country for emerging technology support, no doubt.

I just looked and if you get the NBA league pass for broadband, it doesn't support mobile -- you have to move up from $120 to $170 package... what a joke.

I have DirecTV right now, but I'll be canceling it shortly and when I do I'll probably get the broadband package and see how it works.

Yeah it's a big joke.
I paid 190 for international NBA LP and it still doesn't include mobile.
WTF lol.
