STORY HIGHLIGHTS
2014 NBA draft is so deep that even mid- and late first-rounders must play well to hold position
Kentucky's Andrew Harrison has struggled to run offense and faces test in Louisville's Russ Smith
Villanova forward JayVaughn Pinkston could improve his hope of being drafted vs. Syracuse, Butler

The 2014 NBA draft is being hyped mostly for its incredible top, with six or seven players vying to be the No. 1 pick. But it extends deeper than that, and strong players should be available throughout the first round and into the second. That means every game is key for draft prospects, but some matchups are more important than others.

Here are four players with a lot to prove this week:

Kentucky freshman Andrew Harrison

Schedule: Saturday vs. Louisville, 4 p.m. ET, CBS.

Statistics: 10.6 points and 3.5 assists a game.

When Harrison and twin brother Aaron Harrison joined No. 18 Kentucky's already-loaded recruiting class, the formerly weak starting guard positions were locked up. But the execution of that stability has not been as smooth. Aaron Harrison adjusted to his role at shooting guard after a few weeks and has become one of the more stable players on the team. But Andrew Harrison was the higher-rated prospect because he was the 6-6 point guard, the natural playmaker who would guide Kentucky's balanced roster. Instead, he has been outplayed by opposing point guards in each of the Wildcats' three losses. No. 4 Louisville has one of the best in the country in Russ Smith, but at 6-0 and not known for defensive prowess, he could be exploited by Harrison. Here's a chance for Harrison to prove he can rise to the occasion in the biggest game of the regular season for Kentucky.

2014 NBA Draft: A league full of point guards getting crowded
By Zach Harper | NBA writer

Hard to doubt Marcus Smart's talent but how does he fit in the NBA? (USATSI)
Talk to most people in the NBA and they'll tell you right now that it's a point guard's league. The talent we have at the position may be at its highest in league history and with so much of the attack in today's game based on pick-and-roll and perimeter-oriented systems, having a good point guard seems like a basic prerequisite for success.

When everybody is healthy (which has been tough to accomplish the past couple years), the top 10 list of players in the NBA is full of point guards. Chris Paul, Derrick Rose, Russell Westbrook, Tony Parker, and Deron Williams have been fixtures there when healthy. Guys like Rajon Rondo, Kyrie Irving, and Stephen Curry have been dying to break through to the next level of play. Then you have Damian Lillard, John Wall, Ty Lawson, and other young point guards bursting onto the scene constantly.

It's hard to look at a starting point guard around the league and think that NBA team needs a significant upgrade. Even with the teams that are "expected" to tank this season for a more prosperous draft position, the Utah Jazz have Trey Burke (ninth pick in 2013), the Philadelphia 76ers have been delighted with the play of Michael Carter-Williams (11th pick in 2013), and the Sacramento Kings are in love with what Isaiah Thomas brings to the table.

For the incoming crop of rookie point guards in the 2014 NBA Draft, finding a home outside of the Milwaukee Bucks or Orlando Magic could be a tough spot. And even then if the Bucks and Magic find a way to secure top 5 picks, would they be willing to pass up on a Julius Randle or Joel Embiid in order to put someone like Marcus Smart or Dante Exum as the spearhead of their attack?

The 2014 NBA draft tracker: Jabari Parker continues to shine as others have ups and downs

Every big-time NBA prospect in the college game has been on the floor in the last couple of weeks with varying results. While players like Jabari Parker, Joel Embiid and Julius Randle have looked good, some have had their struggles. With an ever-changing list of players moving in the latest mock drafts, here is a look at the players from the NCAA who could end up in a Jazz uniform a season from now.

Jabari Parker, Fr., Duke: The Blue Devils had two games since the update and Parker played well in both. Against Gardner-Webb, Parker played just 26 minutes, but still managed to put up 21 points on 7-for-12 shooting to go along with six rebounds.

In his game three days later against UCLA, he really showed off his all-around game in an 80-63 victory. Parker made 4 of 8 from 3-point range and all five of his free-throw attempts on the way to 23 points. Parker also tallied 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season while setting a new career high in assists with five.

Of the players projected to go in the top 10 in the draft, Parker is the most polished to this point.

Rodney Hood, So., Duke: Hood didn't have his best two games by any stretch of the imagination against Gardner-Webb and UCLA. He shot a combined 11 for 26 from the floor and just 3 for 13 from distance while scoring 29 points. He did make all of his free throws and grab 10 rebounds in the two contests, but because of his shooting woes, Hood's scoring average dropped to 18.5 points a game. Even after this little slump, Hood is still shooting 55.4 percent from the field for the 9-2 Blue Devils.

Andrew Wiggins, Fr., Kansas: after a two-game losing streak, the Jayhawks bounced back nicely in defeating the New Mexico Lobos and the Georgetown Hoyas. The same can't be said for Wiggins, however. After two of his better games of the year in the losses to Florida and Colorado, Wiggins really struggled offensively in his latest two games.
