I haven't been able to log-in on LG since before the game last night. Not sure why.

It's been a blurry 24 hours for Kendall Marshall, who turned his first start with the Lakers into 20 points and 15 assists Friday against Utah.

His friends and former college teammates texted and called in droves, his Twitter followers increased exponentially and Lakers fans smiled at a warm storyline in an otherwise dreary season.

Marshall, 22, also received something from his mother, Kim. She wasn't happy.

"The only text I got back from my mom was she sent me a video clip and told me stop cursing because they caught me on the bench saying something," he said Saturday. "So I guess I've got to watch my mouth now."

Coach Mike D'Antoni, who has seen unknown point guards escalate quickly in his stat-friendly offense (think Jeremy Lin in New York), said Marshall was as good on video of Friday's game as he appeared to be in person.

"He might not have those numbers all the time -- maybe he does, maybe he doesn't -- but the rhythm that he gives us is what's important," D'Antoni said. "Everybody has a little bit more pep in their step [Saturday] and last night."

D'Antoni leans on Pau Gasol

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- After not playing three times in a five-game span because of an upper respiratory infection, Pau Gasol has returned to the lineup the last two games, averaging 24 points, 11.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 3.5 blocks.

He was as good as he's been all season against the Utah Jazz on Friday, racking up 23 points (on 10-for-17 shooting), 17 rebounds, eight assists and three blocks in the Los Angeles Lakers' 110-99 win to snap a six-game losing streak.

Pau Gasol filled up the stat sheet Friday against the Jazz with 23 points, 17 rebounds, eight assists and three blocks.
What caused the turnaround?

"One is being healthy, that’s going to help," Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni said after practice Saturday. "Two, I think the rhythm of the team was better, and once that is (the case) then he gets more confident and more aggressive. We want Pau to be aggressive. We want him to be in the post every time, or at least in the play every time."

Gasol, the subject of various trade rumors swirling around the last month, including talk of him being dealt to Cleveland continuing to persist, proved that he can still perform and block out the distractions.

"Everybody is in this position, in a sense. You just do your job and good things happen," D'Antoni said. "The worst thing that can happen in this league is pretty daggone good, if you’re in the league. So, it’s not that bad."

Venue: STAPLES Center

Strong offensive performances helped both the Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Lakers end their lengthy losing streaks.

Now only one of the struggling Western Conference teams can continue trending in the right direction Sunday night when the Nuggets visit Staples Center seeking their fifth straight win over the Lakers.

Denver (15-17) had its best shooting night in a month Friday to snap an eight-game skid, hitting 53.8 percent from the field in a 111-108 home win over Memphis. The Nuggets had shot 41.5 percent and averaged 93.4 points in their previous 14 - a 3-11 stretch.

"It's wonderful, a wonderful feeling," forward Kenneth Faried told the team's official website. "We got the monkey off our back, and we can't put it back on. I think we stopped playing so tight, nervous and hesitant. We just came out and hooped."

After shooting a combined 36.4 percent in their last two games, the Lakers (14-19) broke out in similar fashion Friday against Utah to end their losing streak at six. They shot 51.9 percent in a 110-99 home win over the Jazz.

Banged-up Los Angeles did it with its 18th starting five and sixth different starting point guard as coach Mike D'Antoni gave Kendall Marshall his first nod since he was signed from the D-League on Dec. 20. Marshall didn't disappoint with 20 points and 15 rebounds, both career highs after spending his rookie campaign with Phoenix last season.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Mike D'Antoni's "Marshall plan" worked to perfection on a night when the Lakers' coach didn't have any other choice.

Pau Gasol had 23 points and 17 rebounds, and injury-riddled Los Angeles used its sixth different starting point guard of the season in a 110-99 victory over the Utah Jazz on Friday night.

Kendall Marshall was given the assignment by D'Antoni, who has used 18 different starting lineups this season. He was the 14th player to start a game for the Lakers overall, finishing with 20 points and 15 assists in 40 minutes — all career highs.

"I've got to give all the thanks to my teammates. They did a great job of helping me out, as well as the coaches," Marshall said. "When we're knocking down shots and playing defense, that makes it really easy on me."

Kendall Marshall, after being cut by Wizards, has stellar first start with Lakers
BY MICHAEL LEE
January 4 at 2:37 pm

And, I’ve been waiting for this moment… (EPA/PAUL BUCK)

The Wizards didn’t have the need, roster spot or patience to see if Kendall Marshall had what it took to be an NBA point guard when they released him only three days after acquiring him last October from the Phoenix Suns in a deal for Marcin Gortat.
Marshall, the former Bishop O’Connell star, went nearly two months without attracting any attention around the league and slogged in the NBA Development League with the Philadelphia 76ers affiliate, the Delaware 87ers, while waiting for a call-up.
Desperate for point guard help after losing Steve Nash, Steve Blake and Jordan Farmar to injuries, the Los Angeles Lakers signed Marshall on Dec. 19. He played sparingly until Xavier Henry, a swingman masquerading as playmaker, hurt his knee and Farmar returned and was injured again. Lakers Coach Mike D’Antoni was forced to put Marshall in the starting lineup on Friday against the Utah Jazz and he responded with career-highs of 20 points and 15 assists while leading the Lakers to a 101-99 win.
“This was easy because we had no other alternative,” D’Antoni said of giving Marshall a shot. “It’s not like, ‘Hey, I love you, you’re great.’ When you’re the only point guard, you’re not really looking over your shoulder.”

Lakers might have a gem with Kendall Marshall on a two-year contract

The Lakers might have found an inexpensive gem in Kendall Marshall.

A lottery pick by the Phoenix Suns (13th overall) in the 2012 NBA draft, Marshall had a career night on Friday, helping the Lakers defeat the Utah Jazz, 110-99.

Marshall notched multiple career highs with 20 points, 15 assists and six rebounds as the Lakers broke a six-game losing streak. It was his first NBA double-double.

The Lakers have to make a decision on Marshall's two-year, nonguaranteed contract by the afternoon of Jan. 7. Injuries got him a roster spot, but he still needs to earn job security.

His performance Friday night might have done the trick.

Marshall's contract ipays him $547,570 for this season. If the Lakers keep the 22-year-old point guard, they'll still have him for an additional nonguaranteed year at $915,243.

It took injuries to Steve Nash (back), Steve Blake (elbow), Jordan Farmar (hamstring), Kobe Bryant (knee) and Xavier Henry (knee) for Marshall to get the call-up from the Delaware 87ers and a start Friday with the Lakers.

"Things have happened kind of fast," said Marshall. "I'm still humbled by the situation."

Kendall Marshall breathes life into injured Lakers

Dane Carbaugh, SBNation
POSTED: Saturday, January 4, 2014, 11:26 AM

The former Suns guard has helped an embattled backcourt take charge in Los Angeles.

Recently signed from the D-League, Kendall Marshall has been phenomenal for the Los Angeles Lakers in his short time with the team. In Friday night's win against the Utah Jazz, Marshall racked up 20 points and 15 assists, including shooting 2-of-3 on three-pointers.

The Lakers have struggled to find a ball handler all season as Steve Nash has been battling back and nerve issues since November. His backup, Steve Blake, is recovering from a torn ligament in his elbow.

Marshall found himself in the starting lineup after third string point guard Jordan Farmar suffered a second hamstring tear on New Year's Eve.
So far, the move looks to have worked out well. Marshall has increased his assist numbers each game in his last three outings for L.A., and his shooting stroke has been strong. The second-year guard is shooting 58.3 percent from beyond the arc.

Lakers Practice: Marshall, Marshall, Marshall
Kendall Marshall was widely applauded for Friday night's game, but the point guard received an interesting message from his mother.
By Shahan Ahmed | Saturday, Jan 4, 2014 | Updated 1:32 PM PSTView

Kendall Marshall talks to reporters at Los Angeles Lakers practice in El Segundo, Ca on December 4, 2014.

On a Saturday, the Los Angeles Lakers met for a practice, and Kendall Marshall’s impressive Friday night performance was still fresh enough to eat.

“He straightened up a lot of things,” Lakers coach Mike D’Antoni started out praising Marshall. “The rhythm that he gives us is what’s important.”

D’Antoni talked about Marshall making good decisions and pointed out that the 22-year-old only made one bad decision against the Jazz, alluding to Marshall’s lone turnover.

“He throws the ball in the right way. I mean, it’s hard to teach that stuff. You either have it or you don’t,” D’Antoni continued.

When asked about the upcoming matchup against Ty Lawson and the Denver Nuggets, D’Antoni referenced his own playing days and talked about why the opposition should, theoretically, not make a difference for Marshall.

“He plays his game. I don’t care who’s in front of him,” D’Antoni said. “Now, he has to stop Ty Lawson—that might be a problem—but Ty Lawson shouldn’t have anything to do with him.”

NBA Trade Rumors: Los Angeles Lakers cooling on Pau Gasol to Cleveland Cavaliers trade

BY JOSH HILL - JAN 4TH, 2014 AT 2:34 PM

The Los Angles Lakers desire to trade Pau Gasol, or at least their open willingness to do so, has been something we’ve seen develop over the last few years. He’s still on the roster which shows you just how serious they are about trading him, but they remain open about seeing if there’s an offer out there they like.

Recently, the Cleveland Cavaliers have been trying to land Gasol, but the only problem is they aren’t one of those teams with an offer the Lakers like. According to Ramona Shelburne of ESPNLosAngeles, the Lakers are confident that they can get under the luxury tax without trading Gasol which is Los Angeles Lakers still trying to trade Pau Gasol, expect more than cap relief in return” href=”http://fansided.com/2014/01/04/nba-trade-rumors-los-angeles-lakers-trade-pau-gasol-cleveland-cavaliers/”>why they want more than just cap relief in return.

As a result, Shelburne again reiterated today that the Lakers are increasingly cooling on the idea of trading Gasol to the Cavaliers as they feel Cleveland isn’t going to be able to offer a substantial return package for the center.

Kendall Marshall Wants Superstar Teammate to Follow Him on Twitter

BY MATTHEW HOCHBERG - JAN 4TH, 2014 AT 6:04 PM

Kendall Marshall bursted onto the NBA scene on Friday night, dropping 20 points, dishing out 15 assists and recording 6 rebounds – all career-highs – as the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Utah Jazz 110-99.

The 22-year-old signed a two-year, non-guaranteed contract with the team which pays him $547,570 this season and, if retained next year, increases to $915,243.

Since the game, Marshall’s Twitter followers have grown in the thousands, and while he is certainly excited about it, he is still waiting for that one coveted follow.

Kendall Marshall draws Jeremy Lin comparison
Published on Jan 4, 2014 12:04PM
Los Angeles • Kendall Marshall might not be a superstar in the making, but the Jazz certainly helped him look like one tonight.
In his first start with the Lakers, Marshall scored 20 points, handed out 15 dimes and grabbed six rebounds, all while committing just a single turnover. It was a performance that had L.A. coach Mike D'Antoni talking about Marshall in the same breath as another point guard he once coached.

"I'm not making any comparison but Jeremy Lin did the same thing," D'Antoni told reporters.
That's something the Jazz know a little about, having helped launch the Linsanity craze by giving up 28 points to a then largely unknown Knicks point guard in February 2012.
Marshall was a high draft pick out of North Carolina, but couldn't stick in Phoenix. When he was traded to Washington along with Marcin Gortat, he was cut and spent time in the D-League earlier this year.
And he apparently noticed when the Jazz cut Jamaal Tinsley and replaced him with Diante Garrett.

The Lakers' championship banners will be covered and so will much of the intrigue when the Chris Paul-deprived Clippers take on a MASH unit of Steve Nash, Kobe Bryant, Steve Blake and Jordan Farmar all dressed in swanky suits. At least the Clippers retain some tangible upside with a playoff berth to come this spring; the Lakers are faced with that old Shakespearean dilemma: to tank or not to tank? Beating the Clippers for a second time this season could be the closest the Lakers get to seeing a title, at least until they play their next home game and take down the banners of Blake Griffin & Co. shrouding the reminders of happier days that hang from the rafters.

Cavs want Bynum deal by Sunday
Updated: January 4, 2014, 10:23 PM ET
By Brian Windhorst and Ramona Shelburne | ESPN.com

Andrew Bynum's Clever Deal

He has been a so-so player at best, but in the new CBA his contract has special value -- because now even the richest teams feel financial pressure.

After several days of stalled talks, the Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers made progress Saturday on a trade that would involve Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum, sources told ESPN.com.

The Cavaliers want to execute a trade by Sunday so it can be completed ahead of Tuesday's deadline for Bynum's contract to become fully guaranteed, sources said. Trades need 48 hours to be finalized so players can have physicals.

Gasol

Bynum
The Cavs have been involved in talks with other teams looking to take advantage of Bynum's contract. The deal is for $12.3 million this season but if a team waives Bynum by Tuesday it will owe him nothing because the $6.3 million left on the contract is not guaranteed if he's released by that date.

On Friday, ESPN.com reported the Cavs have been in talks with the Jazz for veteran forward Richard Jefferson in a money-saving move for Utah. Cleveland also has considered keeping Bynum and using him as a trade asset before next month's trade deadline, sources said.

The injury-ravaged Lakers have been considering whether to execute a Gasol-for-Bynum trade because it would get them out of the luxury tax for the first time in seven years. More important than the $20 million in instant savings would be easing the pressure of going into the repeater tax in either 2015 or '16, sources said. If a team is in the luxury tax in four out of any five years, it triggers the repeater tax.

According to a report from ESPN’s Brian Windhorst and Ramon Shelburne, the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles have reentered talks centered around a Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum and the Cavaliers are hoping to complete the deal on Sunday. From the report:

The Cavs have been involved in talks with other teams looking to take advantage of Bynum’s contract. The deal is for $12.3 million this season but if a team waives Bynum by Tuesday it will owe him nothing because the $6.3 million left on the contract is not guaranteed if he’s released by that date.

Sources say the Lakers, who broke a six-game losing streak with a victory against the Jazz on Friday night, also are seeking a package that would include a young player or a draft pick from the Cavs, which has been holding up the talks.

NBA Trade Rumors: Pau Gasol for Andrew Bynum deal may happen Sunday
By Sam Vecenie  @Sam_Vecenie on Jan 4 2014, 11:04p 28

Jennifer Stewart-USA TODAY Sport
The Cavaliers and Lakers are still engaged in talks involving Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol. Around and around and around they go, when they'll stop nobody knows.

The Cavaliers and Lakers are inching closer to completing a Pau Gasol for Andrew Bynum-centered deal, according to Brian Windhorst of ESPN.

Cavs fall to Nets 89-82

The Cavs lost again on the road Saturday night, this time to the Nets 89-82.
A lot to unpack there. First and foremost, it seems like the Cavaliers want to get this done so that they still have the option to cut Bynum if they need to. The Lakers also want to get this whole thing done because they have to be able to cut him to gain any value out of him. Second, let's keep in mind that the Cavaliers do have to send SOMETHING with Bynum to make this deal. A straight-up swap does not work monetarily. Adding any of Earl Clark, Jarrett Jack, C.J. Miles, Alonzo Gee, Anthony Bennett, Dion Waiters, or Tristan Thompson makes this deal work via league rules. I obviously doubt that Thompson or Bennett would be involved, and would be surprised to see Waiters be involved.

Los Angeles Lakers, Cleveland Cavaliers have discussed Pau Gasol for Andrew Bynum trade
Lakers would be giving up more established player for salary tax relief but want more from Cavaliers
Cleveland needs to make decision on Bynum before Sunday to ensure chance to cut him by Tuesday

Pau Gasol may or may not be traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday.

The Los Angeles Lakers big man once again is the subject of trade talks, this time with the possibility that he'd swap spots with former teammate Andrew Bynum in a possible deal that is of very little relevance to this particular season when it comes to the competitive landscape. This is about failed ventures on both sides and mutually-beneficial attempts to fix bad teams.

There's a time element coming into play here because of the nature of Bynum's contract, as he will be guaranteed an additional $6 million by Tuesday unless the Cavs or any other team that trades for him cuts him loose. (He earned $6 million to this point and has a team option for next season worth $12.5 million.) Trades typically take a couple of days to get completely finalized with physicals and such, and so it is that this particular trade deadline — albeit unofficial — is seen by the Cavaliers as Sunday.

Conflicting 'reports' on status of Pau Gasol trade to Cavaliers

Lakers power forward Pau Gasol may -- or may not -- be headed out of town in exchange for Cleveland's Andrew Bynum. (Barbara Davidson / Los Angeles Times)

Will the Lakers trade Pau Gasol to the Cleveland Cavaliers before Andrew Bynum's contract becomes fully guaranteed?

According to a late-night tweet Saturday from ESPN-LA 710 Radio, the answer is yes ... or maybe no.

"BREAKING NEWS — League sources say Pau/Bynum deal is done and happening Sunday," read a tweet from the @ESPNLA710 feed.

Soon after, ESPN-LA reporter Ramona Shelburne gave a different take.

NBA trade rumor: Cavaliers won't trade Dion Waiters to Lakers in Pau Gasol-Andrew Bynum swap, per report

POSTED: Sunday, January 5, 2014, 2:42 PM

The Cavaliers are refusing to trade Dion Waiters to the Lakers in a package for Pau Gasol.

The Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers are still engaged in trade discussions centered around Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol, but both sides are still far apart. The Cavaliers have refused to include Dion Waiters in a package deal, according to Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski. The Lakers are still seeking additional assets and do not want to trade Gasol as a straight salary dump.

The Cavaliers must trade or waive Bynum by Tuesday or an additional $6.2 million of his 2013-2014 salary becomes fully guaranteed. The second-year of his contract is fully non-guaranteed, however. Cleveland is expected to waive Bynum if they are unable to deal him prior to Tuesday. If the Lakers trade for Bynum they are also expected to waive their former center.

Andrew Bynum, agent waiting to hear next move by Cleveland Cavaliers

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Andrew Bynum's agent, David Lee, is waiting to hear what's next for his client -- just like everybody else.

Amid reports by ESPN.com and other Internet outlets that the Cavaliers were hoping to finalize a deal that would send Bynum to the Los Angeles Lakers for Pau Gasol on Sunday, Lee told The Plain Dealer on Sunday morning that he did not know where things stood or what might happen.

"They've been keeping it close to the vest,'' he said of the Cavaliers.

Asked if he thought he'd get a heads up before any deal was announced, Lee said, "I would like to think I would, but who knows? We know we have to do it by Tuesday.''

NBA Rumors: Carmelo Anthony To Clippers, Blake Griffin To Knicks, Andrew Bynum To Lakers, Pau Gasol To Cavs?

By Alex Groberman, Sun, January 05, 2014
The NBA trade deadline is Feb. 20. That means for the next month and change, teams that are either in full-on rebuilding mode and ones that are just on the outside of a title run will engage in a variety of talks centering around numerous pieces. Most of the time, these talks won’t amount to anything. However, each time any player with even an iota of name recognition is mentioned, basketball fans will go insane.

Over the past week, the Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks, Los Angeles Clippers and Cleveland Cavaliers have found themselves at the center of several such trade talks.

The Clippers were said to have interest in Carmelo Anthony, who is set to become a free agent next summer, and are reportedly willing to part ways with former franchise cornerstone, Blake Griffin, to attain him. On Saturday night, Doc Rivers called the idea of an Anthony-for-Griffin trade "stupid” – much in the same way he told everyone he would never leave the Boston Celtics right before he actually did. Same exact tone of voice, actually.

Pau Gasol & Andrew Bynum Trade – Los Angeles Lakers Waited Too Long
Posted on 5 Jan, 2014, by Greg in Basketball

Unless something unpredictable happens, Pau Gasol will be traded from the Los Angeles Lakers to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Andrew Bynum. While it seems sad that a two-time champion with the franchise is being moved, a better front office would have pulled the trigger on the trade sooner.
Right now? The Lakers are trying to get more than just Bynum from the deal. The Cleveland Cavaliers want only one thing – getting Bynum off the roster by January 7, before the next $6.3 million on his deal (paid him $6 million by now) become guaranteed. The Cavs want nothing to do with the player who doesn’t seem that interested in playing basketball, or for them at least. The Lakers are probably going to cut him the moment they acquire him.
The Lakers do get Gasol’s salary off the salary bill, but he was becoming a free agent in any case. The biggest plus in trading Gasol and what remains of his $19 million salary is the relief in tax bills. Around $20 million in luxury tax and maybe more important, avoiding the repeater tax penalty, in either 2015 or ’16. Just a reminder: If a team is in the luxury tax in four out of any five years, it triggers the repeater tax.

Pau Gasol is still a Laker as of morning shoot-around

Power forward Pau Gasol took part in the Lakers' shoot-around Sunday morning, but how long he remains with the team is unknown. (Barbara Davidson / Los Angeles Times)
By Ben Bolch
January 5, 2014, 11:59 a.m.

One of the last Lakers to walk off the practice court Sunday following the team's shoot-around was Pau Gasol after he shot a series of free throws.

Could they be the last ones he takes in a Lakers uniform?

Speculation continued to swirl that the Lakers remain engaged in talks with Cleveland regarding a trade that would send Gasol to the Cavaliers in exchange for Andrew Bynum, at least one other player to meet salary requirements and a possible draft pick.

Lakers Coach Mike D'Antoni was asked if he was on pins and needles about whether Gasol would continue to play for him.

"It concerns everybody and it’s things you’ve got to play through," D'Antoni said, "but it’s things you can’t worry about."

Gasol did not speak with the media after the shoot-around.

The Lakers play the Denver Nuggets on Sunday evening at Staples Center, with D'Antoni saying Wes Johnson would replace Nick Young in the starting lineup.

The Lakers will have used 19 starting lineups in 34 games this season.
