Cavs refusing to include Dion Waiters in Andrew Bynum-Pau Gasol trade talks with Lakers
By Adrian Wojnarowski and Marc J. Spears

Yahoo Sports

The Cleveland Cavaliers have refused to include Dion Waiters into Andrew Bynum-Pau Gasol trade talks and remain reluctant on sending a future first-round draft pick to the Los Angeles Lakers, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Los Angeles could save $20 million-plus on a Gasol-Bynum deal, but the Lakers' insistence on more than salary-cap relief from the Cavaliers – such as Waiters or a draft pick – has been a significant hurdle in discussions.

Cleveland sees Gasol – who will be a free agent in 2014 – as a rental player for the rest of this season and largely wants the Lakers to view the substantial financial savings as motivation to complete the deal, sources said.

Time is running out for the Cavaliers to beat the Tuesday contractual deadline on Bynum's $12 million for the rest of this season. Whether the Cavaliers keep Bynum or trade him, his deal can bought out for $6 million until Tuesday. After that, the contract becomes fully guaranteed for the season.

Screw Dan Snyder and that entire organization. This dick cost us CP3 and he's trying to (bleep) us over once again. Screw him.

Don't give in Mitch. We can ride with Pau if we need to.

Preview: Lakers vs. Denver Nuggets

By Eric Pincus
January 5, 2014, 2:07 p.m.

The Lakers (14-19) will host the Denver Nuggets (15-17) on Sunday night at Staples Center.

The Nuggets have actually struggled more than the Lakers recently, dropping eight of their last 10. The Lakers finally ended a six-game losing streak with a win Friday over the Utah Jazz, their third win over their last 10.

Denver will play without reserve point guard Andre Miller, who was originally suspended for two games for conduct detrimental to the team. While the suspension (and financial penalty) was lifted, Miller will still miss Sunday's game in Los Angeles.

Coach Mike D'Antoni will start forward Wesley Johnson, who missed a game with gastroenteritis before coming off the bench Friday as he worked his way back from a difficult few days. Guard Nick Young will return to the bench.

Kendall Marshall will get his second start at point guard, in the absence of Steve Nash (back), Steve Blake (elbow) and Jordan Farmar (hamstring). Also out are guard Kobe Bryant (knee) and forward Xavier Henry (knee).

The Nuggets will be without center JaVale McGee (tibia), forward Danilo Gallinari (knee) and Miller.

Key matchup

Marshall truly had a brilliant night Friday, stunning the Jazz with 20 points, 15 assists and six rebounds — all career highs.

The 22-year-old point guard was in the NBA Development League just weeks ago.

Can he deliver again against Ty Lawson and the Nuggets?

It's too much to expect that kind of line from Marshall, but if he can continue to help organize the Lakers' offense and hit outside shots, he gives L.A. a real option at a position that has seen injury after injury.

Lawson is a difficult cover, averaging 17.7 points and 8.1 assists per game. In a Nov. 13 win over the Lakers, he scored 19 with seven assists.

The Lakers are going to need to give a lot of help if Marshall struggles to stay in front of the lightning-quick Lawson.

If Gasol was on the move, you'd figure Lakers would sit him tonight vs. Denver. As of five minutes ago, I'm told he's starting.

Nuggets-Lakers Preview

Strong offensive performances helped both the Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Lakers end their lengthy losing streaks.

Now only one of the struggling Western Conference teams can continue trending in the right direction Sunday night when the Nuggets visit Staples Center seeking their fifth straight win over the Lakers.

Denver (15-17) had its best shooting night in a month Friday to snap an eight-game skid, hitting 53.8 percent from the field in a 111-108 home win over Memphis. The Nuggets had shot 41.5 percent and averaged 93.4 points in their previous 14 -- a 3-11 stretch.

"It's wonderful, a wonderful feeling," forward Kenneth Faried told the team's official website. "We got the monkey off our back, and we can't put it back on. I think we stopped playing so tight, nervous and hesitant. We just came out and hooped."

After shooting a combined 36.4 percent in their last two games, the Lakers (14-19) broke out in similar fashion Friday against Utah to end their losing streak at six. They shot 51.9 percent in a 110-99 home win over the Jazz.

Banged-up Los Angeles did it with its 18th starting five and sixth different starting point guard as coach Mike D'Antoni gave Kendall Marshall his first nod since he was signed from the D-League on Dec. 20. Marshall didn't disappoint with 20 points and 15 rebounds, both career highs after spending his rookie campaign with Phoenix last season.

"Everything happens for a reason, so I'm thankful for the position I'm in right now and I want to make the most of it with this team," Marshall said

Bynum-Gasol deal on hold for now

Andrew Bynum's Clever Deal

He has been a so-so player at best, but in the new CBA his contract has special value -- because now even the richest teams feel financial pressure.
After a week of talks, the Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers could not find common ground on a trade involving Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum by Sunday night, sources told ESPN.com.

The Lakers and Cavs could not find common ground on a trade involving Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum by Sunday night, sources told ESPN.com.
While there was disappointment a resolution was not reached by Sunday night, there is an expectation that talks between the teams would continue into Monday, sources said.

Both sides were interested in getting something done before the end of the weekend, but they could not get traction. The Lakers leave Monday for a road trip to Texas and the Cavs wanted to be able to process physicals of any new players before Tuesday's deadline for Bynum's contract to be guaranteed.

Though the discussions have been varied and both sides considered numerous possibilities, the central issue never wavered, sources said.

The Lakers wanted more than just salary savings that trading for Bynum and waiving him would bring, primarily a young player or valuable draft pick. Trading for and cutting Bynum had the potential to save the Lakers more than $20 million in salary and luxury taxes. The Cavs, who stood to add millions to their own payroll with the deal, have resisted meeting the price because Gasol will be a free agent at the end of the season.

The Cavs are considering two other possible deals, sources said. One is to trade Bynum to the Utah Jazz for veteran forward Richard Jefferson.

Here it is but again, it was retracted by the original source.

In a recognition that this season is finished and the team needs to accrue what assets it can for the future, the team has reportedly consummated the oft-rumored deal of Pau Gasol for former Laker Andrew Bynum.

NBA Trade Rumors: Pau Gasol for Andrew Bynum deal may happen Sunday

The Cavaliers and Lakers are inching closer to completing a Pau Gasol for Andrew Bynum-centered deal, according to Brian Windhorst of ESPN.

After several days of stalled talks, the Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers made progress Saturday on a trade that would involve Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum, sources told ESPN.com.

The Cavaliers want to execute a trade by Sunday so it can be completed ahead of Tuesday's deadline for Bynum's contract to become fully guaranteed, sources said. Trades need 48 hours to be finalized so players can have physicals.
Cavs fall to Nets 89-82

The Cavs lost again on the road Saturday night, this time to the Nets 89-82.
A lot to unpack there. First and foremost, it seems like the Cavaliers want to get this done so that they still have the option to cut Bynum if they need to. The Lakers also want to get this whole thing done because they have to be able to cut him to gain any value out of him. Second, let's keep in mind that the Cavaliers do have to send SOMETHING with Bynum to make this deal. A straight-up swap does not work monetarily. Adding any of Earl Clark, Jarrett Jack, C.J. Miles, Alonzo Gee, Anthony Bennett, Dion Waiters, or Tristan Thompson makes this deal work via league rules. I obviously doubt that Thompson or Bennett would be involved, and would be surprised to see Waiters be involved.

The Denver Nuggets cruised to an easy win at Staples Center on Sunday night, defeating the Lakers, 137-115.

The Lakers scored more than enough points to win an NBA game, but absolutely fell apart defensively. The Nuggets did a lot of damage from three-point range, hitting 12 of 29 (41.4%) from behind the arc while shooting 53.5% from the field.

Denver also dominated the boards, collecting 58 rebounds to the Lakers' 38.

Reserve guard Nate Robinson led the Nuggets with 21 points, point guard Ty Lawson dished 12 assists and forward Kenneth Faried collected a game-high 13 rebounds.

Center Timofey Mozgov and Lawson both scored 20. Seven Nuggets hit double figures, including forward Wilson Chandler (17), Faried (17), guard Randy Foye (14) and guard Evan Fournier (12).

The Lakers were led by power forward Pau Gasol's 25 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Guard Jodie Meeks scored 23 while forward Nick Young contributed 21 off the bench.

Point guard Kendall Marshall set a career high with 17 assists, tied his career high with six rebounds but scored just nine points on three-of-10 shooting.

The Lakers shot 47.2% from the field but just 14.3% (three of 21) from three-point range.

Denver scored 31 points off the Lakers' 15 turnovers. The Lakers scored only 12 points off 15 miscues from the Nuggets.

It's defense optional again for Lakers in 137-115 loss to Nuggets
The Lakers give up a season high in points and lose for the seventh time in eight games. Pau Gasol tries to remain upbeat despite rumors of a trade to Cavaliers.

By Ben Bolch

The Lakers turned to the Marshall Plan again, new point guard Kendall Marshall giving them another solid game after being plucked from the Development League.

They're also open to fresh alternatives on defense after yielding 77 points in the second half and another big game to Timofey Mozgov, of all people.

The Denver Nuggets' backup center shredded the Lakers again Sunday night at Staples Center, his 20 points and seven rebounds at the forefront of his team's 137-115 victory.

In two games against the Lakers this season, Mozgov has scored 23 and 20 points, an inexplicable bonanza for a player who entered the game averaging 8.4 points and had not scored more than 17 against any other opponent.

"He's definitely had his way against us these last two games," Lakers forward Pau Gasol said in a bit of an understatement.

Mozgov made eight of 10 shots and added two blocks and two steals in only 21 minutes. His dominance was just one of several feel-bad story lines for the perpetually short-handed Lakers, who gave up a season high in points on the way to losing for the seventh time in eight games.

"What's that saying [from] Winston Churchill?" Lakers Coach Mike D'Antoni asked. "When you're going through hell, just keep going, and that's what we've got to do."
