Bob Finnan's NBA notes: Cavs approaching expensive Andrew Bynum deadline

It appears the Cavs will not be able to trade Andrew Bynum. So what will they do?
By Bob Finnan, The Morning Journal & The News-Herald
POSTED: 01/04/14, 5:53 PM EST | UPDATED: 1 DAY AGO
The clock is ticking on Andrew Bynum's time with the Cavaliers.
The Cavs are desperately trying to deal the disgruntled center before 5 p.m. Tuesday. He’s guaranteed $6 million regardless. If he’s on the roster by Jan. 10, his entire $12.25 million contract is guaranteed.
This much we know: He won’t be back with the team under any circumstance. There’s a chance they could hang onto him and try to deal him by the Feb. 20 trade deadline. His expiring contract this summer might be attractive to a cap-conscious team.
ESPN.com reported the possible trade to the Los Angeles Lakers has hit an impasse. The Lakers had some interest in acquiring Bynum and waiving him, which would save them $20 million in salary and luxury tax. They would have sent forward/center Pau Gasol and his bloated $19.3 million contract to the Cavs.
But the Lakers decided they wanted another asset in the deal, either a first-round pick or a young prospect. Ohio.com reported that young player could be first-round pick Sergey Karasev. The Cavs certainly won’t forfeit their first-round pick this year, and they shouldn’t include the young Russian in this deal.
Karasev isn’t ready to play in the NBA right now, but once he develops, he’s going to be a solid rotational player for the Cavs. The left-hander can shoot, a dying trait in the league.

So Bynum will be a Bull for a moment.

But what strikes me are the three picks that went with him. That's how much Deng has more value than Pau. Cavs would not give any young assets to us for Pau, but they gave three picks away to get Deng....

Bulls trade Deng to Cavs for Bynum, draft picks

By K.C. Johnson, Tribune reporter
1:36 a.m. CST, January 7, 2014

Ending one longtime era and starting a new, certainly different one, the Bulls traded Luol Deng to the Cavaliers late Monday night for center Andrew Bynum and three draft picks.

The Bulls will waive Bynum before the second half of his $12.3 million contract becomes guaranteed on Tuesday. That move will drop them below the luxury-tax threshold in a season in which they no longer are championship contenders after the loss of Derrick Rose to a knee injury, saving them close to $15 million.

More importantly, it will start the rebuild on what management hopes is a second championship window after the first built around the core of Rose, Deng, Carlos Boozer and Joakim Noah closed when Rose tore his meniscus.

“The moves today will put us in a better position to make the entire roster stronger for the future and to compete for a championship,” general manager Gar Forman said in a statement.

The Bulls all along insisted they wouldn’t trade Deng merely as a salary dump. But talks accelerated after Deng's camp rejected one more overture at an extension last week, which sources placed at $10 million annually over the next three or four years. When the Cavaliers met the Bulls’ demands for draft picks, the trade was on.

Cavaliers trade Andrew Bynum, draft picks to Bulls for Luol Deng

CAVALIERS, LUOL DENG

The Cavaliers have traded center Andrew Bynum and multiple draft picks to the Bulls for forward Luol Deng.

In addition to Bynum, the Bulls will receive the Kings’ 2014 first-round pick (top-12 protected), the Blazers’ 2015 and 2016 second-round picks, and the right to swap 2015 first-round picks with the Cavaliers (if Cleveland’s falls between 15-30).

“We are very excited for Luol to join the Cavaliers organization, ” Cavaliers GM Chris Grant said in a statement. “We have worked to acquire and maintain flexibility in order to capitalize on opportunities such as this. Luol reflects all that we are striving for in building our team. He’s a tremendous defensive player that can impact the game on both ends of the court with a team-first mentality and is a high character leader.”

The Bulls acquired Deng on the night of the 2004 NBA draft, and he had spent the entirety of his nine-plus year career with the organization.

“We have great respect for Luol Deng, as a player and a person,” Bulls GM Gar Forman said in a statement. “He has been an incredible contributor to our team on the court, and he has also done great things in the community. On behalf of the entire Bulls organization, I want to thank Luol for his years in Chicago. … The moves made today will put us in a better position to make the entire roster stronger for the future and to compete for a championship.”

Bynum Traded For Deng

Tim Legler breaks down the Andrew Bynum-Luol Deng trade, which sends Deng to the Cavaliers and Bynum to the Bulls.

In a move that has the Cleveland Cavaliers thinking about the present and the Chicago Bulls thinking about the future, the two teams executed a major trade late Monday night. The Bulls are sending two-time All-Star Luol Deng to the Cavs for Andrew Bynum, three future draft picks and major salary savings.

The Cavs, looking to end a three-year playoff drought, are attempting to make a run by acquiring Deng to shore up the small forward position. They parlayed Bynum's favorable contract into a piece to put next to young guards Kyrie Irving and Dion Waiters.

Deng, 28, is averaging 19 points, 6.9 rebounds and 3.7 assists in 23 games. He's been bothered by an injured Achilles that caused him to miss nine games over the past six weeks. He has returned to play in the Bulls' last three games. The Cavs, who have lost eight of their past night games and have been missing Irving with a knee injury, are hoping Deng helps them turn things around.

"We have worked to acquire and maintain flexibility in order to capitalize on opportunities such as this," Cavs general manager Chris Grant said. " Luol reflects all that we are striving for in building our team. He's a tremendous defensive player that can impact the game on both ends of the court with a team-first mentality and is a high character leader."

Yep, the reports that the Cavs resisted meeting the Lakers price because Gasol will be a free agent at the end of the season can't be the reason because if I'm not mistaken Deng's contract is up at the end of this year the same as Pau.... So it would appear Deng is much more coveted than Pau, of course age is a factor considering Deng is still young at 28 years of age and Pau is 33 years old

Shawne Williams waived by Los Angeles Lakers
by: Ramona Shelburne
DALLAS -- The Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday waived forward Shawne Williams to trim their roster to 14, one under the league maximum.

Williams was having something of a resurgent year for the Lakers, averaging 5.2 points, 4.5 rebounds and 0.9 assists in 32 games.

His defense, and ability to stretch the floor from the power forward position had earned him 11 starts.

However, he was one of four players who had to be waived by 5 p.m. Tuesday, or their contracts would be guaranteed for the rest of the season.

Rookie forward Ryan Kelly and guards Kendall Marshall and Xavier Henry are the others.

In my opinion, this was a dumb move for the Cavs; Dont think Deng will want to stay in Cleveland either. As a rental, Pau is better and gets them further this year.

However, from what I understand the draft picks given up by Cleveland were not anything special and they really wanted a SF
