The Lakers (14-20) take to the road on Tuesday night, visiting the Mavericks (19-15) in Dallas.

Dallas has lost two consecutive games and five of their last 10, but the Lakers are in a true slump, dropping seven of their last eight despite playing five at home.

Can the injured Lakers climb out of their rut on the road against a quality team?

Regardless, they'll need to try without Kobe Bryant (knee), Steve Nash (back), Steve Blake (elbow), Jordan Farmar (hamstring) and Xavier Henry (knee).

Key matchup

After sitting out with bronchitis and a sinus infection, Pau Gasol has looked a lot healthier the last few games.

Over his last three, he's averaging 24.3 points, 11 rebounds, 3.3 blocked shots and 4.7 assists a game.

With so many injuries, the Lakers haven't been able to support Gasol's production, certainly not defensively.

Gasol and the Lakers will have to find a way to deal with Dirk Nowitzki, who is averaging 20.9 points a game while shooting 48.9% from the field, 41% from behind the arc and 89.8% from the line.

Nowitzki, with his jump shot, is very difficult to handle. The Lakers might use Gasol but others might get a chance on the Dallas star, including Shawne Williams, Wesley Johnson, Ryan Kelly, Robert Sacre and even the rarely used Chris Kaman.

Los Angeles Lakers (14-20) at Dallas Mavericks (19-15), 8:30 p.m. (ET)

(SportsNetwork.com) - The Dallas Mavericks hope to halt their recent home struggles when they entertain the Los Angeles Lakers Tuesday in the finale of a three-game residency from American Airlines Center.

The Mavericks are winless in the last four games at home, but still have a solid 11-6 record in Big D. They fell to 0-2 on the residency with losses to the Los Angeles Clippers and New York Knicks, who recorded a 92-80 triumph on Sunday. Dirk Nowitzki tallied 18 points and nine boards in a losing cause.

Monta Ellis and Vince Carter scored 13 points apiece, Jose Calderon added 12 points and DeJuan Blair ended with 11 for the Mavericks, who shot just 41 percent for the game and allowed 22 points on 11 turnovers. The Mavs trailed by a 52-35 margin at halftime and pulled within 82-76. But the Knicks pulled away to send the Mavs to another loss since a three-game win streak.

"It was a very poor showing in the first half and I am taking the blame for all of it," Mavs head coach Rick Carlisle said.

Dallas is now 13-3 when holding its opponents under 100 points and will next play two in a row on the road against San Antonio and New Orleans.

The Lakers will play their next three games on the road and have lost seven of the past eight contests, including Sunday's 137-115 beating at the hands of the Denver Nuggets in the finale of a four-game homestand (1-3).

The Nuggets set or tied season-highs in points (137), assists (32), rebounds (58) and steals (12), and scored 30-plus points in each of the last three quarters. Denver outscored the Lakers, 77-54, over the last two periods.

Bad News Mavericks: Whining More Than Winning
By Richie Whitt | Tuesday, Jan 7, 2014 | Updated 3:04 PM CSTView

ATLANTA, GA - NOVEMBER 29:

Samuel Dalembert can’t wake up. Dirk Nowitzki’s missing clutch shots. Devin Harris still isn’t healthy.

And, mostly, the trouble with the Mavericks is that they’re constantly blowing double-digit leads because they’re reliable on neither defense nor rebounding. Only three NBA teams – the Heat, Bucks and Lakers – have a worse rebounding margin than Dallas’ -3.4. And the Mavs allow a gaudy 101.5 points, 21st in the league.

It’s rebounding. It’s defense. It’s crunch-time execution. It’s … not officiating.

Hate to hear this, but the Mavs are up to their whining ways again, sending a video compilation to the league office in New York of what they say are non-calls on Nowitzki’s shooting elbow. As I said a week ago in the wake of an officiating gift in Minnesota, when the Mavs start complaining about the refs they should immediately stop.

Dirk missed three open shots in an ugly home loss to the Raptors. He missed an open leaner in the lane last Friday night in the final minute against the Clippers. He’s been good this season, but not great in the clutch. And his team has coughed up enough big leads for two seasons.

Opening Tip: Ellis regressing to mean?
January, 7, 2014
JAN 7
8:00
AM CT
By Tim MacMahon | ESPNDallas.com

DALLAS – After Monta Ellis’ magnificent debut for the Dallas Mavericks, he vowed to make it the norm.

“I can hold up to it,” Ellis said after his 32-point, eight-assist performance in the season-opening win over the Atlanta Hawks. “You’ll see.”

For his first six weeks or so in a Mavs uniform, Ellis came close enough to backing up those bold words. Now that he’s mired in his first mini-slump of the season, Ellis apparently doesn’t have much to say, dressing in the trainers’ room after Sunday night’s loss to the New York Knicks and darting up the stairs as soon as the media surrounded Dirk Nowitzki after Monday’s practice.

So we’ll have to wait for an explanation from Ellis about why his offensive numbers have dipped significantly over the last dozen games, a stretch in which the Mavs are 6-6.

Ellis is averaging only 17.3 points on 41.9 percent shooting, including 20 percent from 3-point range, in that span. By comparison, he averaged 21.5 points while shooting 47.2 percent from the floor and 37.3 percent from 3-point range in the first 22 games. His shot totals and locations haven’t changed significantly, just his success as a scorer.

LAKERS-MAVERICKS PREVIEW
By Jordan Garretson| January 06, 2014

The Los Angeles Lakers are playing their worst basketball of the season. Finding a quick answer to their woes could prove difficult with a road-heavy schedule ahead.

Los Angeles will begin a stretch in which it plays 10 of 11 games on the road Tuesday night against the Dallas Mavericks.

The Lakers (14-20) have dropped seven of eight overall as they come off a 137-115 home loss to Denver on Sunday. It marked the club's most points allowed in regulation since a 141-124 loss at Charlotte on Nov. 24, 1993. Opponents are averaging 108.3 points over the last eight games.

Rebounding also continues to be a major issue with Los Angeles surrendering a 58-38 edge on the boards against the Nuggets. Coach Mike D'Antoni's team averages a minus-5.1 margin per game, worst in the NBA.

With a return date for Kobe Bryant still unknown and Steve Nash not likely to come back until next month, the Lakers will remain short-handed as they try to turn things around. Los Angeles has lost its last three road games by double digits, and its next four come against the teams comprising the bottom half of the Western Conference playoff picture - Dallas, Houston, the Clippers and Phoenix.

"It's tough. There's no sugarcoating it," D'Antoni said. "We're in a hole, and we put ourselves in this hole. We'll get guys coming back (from injury). We just have to keep playing hard, keep your head down, go through it."

Pau Gasol remains one of the team's few bright spots as he plays well despite being linked to trade rumors. He's averaging 24.3 points and 11.0 rebounds over his last three contests. "I wanted to play my best and give it everything I have," Gasol said after finishing with 25 points and 10 rebounds against Denver.

Gasol is averaging only 12.3 points in his last three versus the Mavericks and was 4 of 9 with 10 points in 31 minutes of the Lakers' 123-104 loss in Dallas on Nov. 5.

The Mavericks (19-15) shot 52.1 percent from the field in that contest and matched a season high with 13 3-pointers on 27 attempts, but they're coming off a season-low scoring total in Sunday's 92-80 home defeat to the New York Knicks.

Andrew Bynum waived by Bulls after being traded
By SB Nation NBA News on Jan 7 2014, 3:16p 2

David Richard-USA TODAY Sports
After being suspended and then traded by Cleveland, the young big man finds himself in free agency. Will anyone step up and sign him?

Andrew Bynum is a free agent. After acquiring the center in exchange for Luol Deng on Monday, the Chicago Bulls unsurprisingly waived Bynum on Tuesday before his contract became guaranteed for the rest of the season, according to CBS Sports' Ken Berger.

Bynum signed a partially guaranteed two-year, $24 million contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers in July. The Cavs have already paid Bynum $6 million, but his contract would've kicked in for another $6 million on Jan. 10 if he was not released. (Bynum's second year was fully unguaranteed.) In order for Bynum to clear waivers in time, Chicago had to do this before 5 p.m. ET on Tuesday. The Bulls have done just that.

Kobe, Bynum and ill fates

Looking back at the death throes of the Lakers' mini-dynasty is an exercise in unavoidable heartburn.
The Bulls will save over $20 million as a result of trading Deng and releasing Bynum, as the moves will bring the team's total salaries below the league's luxury tax threshold. There is speculation that Chicago's next major move will be using the amnesty provision on Carlos Boozer this summer, which would give the Bulls the financial flexibility to chase free agents and dramatically reshape their roster.

Pau Gasol Trade Rumors: Los Angeles Lakers Win by Not Acquiring, Waiving Andrew Bynum
By Michael C. Jones

Pau Gasol is a four-time All-Star and two-time NBA champion.

COMMENTARY | Now that the Cleveland Cavaliers have sent Andrew Bynum and three future draft picks to the Chicago Bulls for swingman Luol Deng, the Los Angeles Lakers will go back to the drawing board with respect to improving their team for the future.

NBA trade rumors: Lakers want more from Cavs in Andrew Bynum deal
According to Ramona Shelburne and Brian Windhorst of ESPN, the Lakers sought a deal by Sunday, Jan. 5 in order to acquire Bynum before his salary for this season became fully guaranteed after Tuesday. Such a move would allow the Lakers to waive him before that date and save $20 million, thus giving them some flexibility to avoid the repeater tax in 2015 or 2016.

After multiple reports involving a Gasol-for-Bynum swap surfaced, neither team could find a deal it felt was in its best interest. For their part, the Cavs were unwilling to part ways with mercurial shooting guard Dion Waiters, who was at the center of early trade rumors after clashing with the organization.

Young: Gasol rumors the norm
Updated: January 7, 2014, 2:50 PM ET
By Ramona Shelburne | ESPNLosAngeles.com

DALLAS -- Pau Gasol remains with the Los Angeles Lakers after the Cleveland Cavaliers instead chose to deal Andrew Bynum and a package of draft picks to the Chicago Bulls for Luol Deng late Monday.

Tuesday morning was business as usual for the Lakers, who held a shootaround in advance of their game against the Mavericks.

Gasol, 33, may be used to hearing his name connected with trades. But it's never comfortable. And this was a new experience altogether for his teammates, most of whom were not here last season.

"I'm pretty sure it'll come back up. That's what comes with being a Laker," forward Nick Young said. "We're still getting used to it, but we'll be OK."

Young said players were happy Gasol wasn't traded because of what it signaled to the team about management's faith in the rest of the season.

"Yeah, that's one thing you were thinking about," Young said. "If they get rid of Pau, it's basically saying it's over. But we all feel that faith and still think something can happen."

The Lakers fell to 14-20 with a 137-115 loss Sunday to the Denver Nuggets. They face the Mavericks -- losers of their previous four home games -- Tuesday and travel to Houston on Wednesday. The Rockets may be without sharp-shooting forward Chandler Parsons, who injured his knee at practice Monday.

NBA Trade Rumors: Lakers Would Be Better off Holding onto Pau Gasol
BY JASPER SCHERER (CORRESPONDENT) ON JANUARY 7, 2014

Andrew D. Bernstein/Getty Images
Los Angeles Lakers center Pau Gasol can't seem to avoid trade speculation this year, but he still seems to have secured a spot with the Lakers for the foreseeable future. Given the failed trade talks between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Brooklyn Nets, the Lakers just can't seem to find a way to trade their best big man.

But that might be for the best.

Most importantly, the Lakers have no other viable options at the center position. Jordan Hill has proven to be a solid player this year, with a fantastic 21.7 PER in limited playing time.

But after that, there isn't much. Chris Kaman is not a reliable scorer (8.2 PPG) or defender (1.11 BPG). There are also only two power forwards on the roster: Shawne Williams and Ryan Kelly, neither of whom have shown the scoring touch or a solid inside presence.

Mavericks end home skid, 110-97 over Lakers
AP 11:53 p.m. EST January 7, 2014

DALLAS (AP) — Dirk Nowitzki scored 27 points and the Dallas Mavericks avoided their longest home losing streak in 14 years with a 110-97 victory over the slumping and injury-plagued Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night.

The Mavericks had lost four straight at home, the last victory in their arena coming against Memphis the week before Christmas.

Los Angeles lost for the eighth time in nine games.

BOX SCORE: Mavs 110, Lakers 97

Nowitzki had three baskets on passes from Gal Mekel in a 59-second span early in the second quarter to put Dallas up 43-39. Nowitzki started the span with a running layup before consecutive 11-foot jumpers that sandwiched a 3-pointer by Jodie Meeks.

Meeks, who led the Lakers with 24 points, made two free throws with 8:07 left in the first half to tie the game at 43, but Jose Calderon's 3-pointer on a pass from Shawn Marion put the Mavericks ahead to stay.

Monta Ellis had 16 points and nine assists for Dallas, including 10 straight points midway through the fourth quarter that pushed the lead to 101-88 with 5½ minutes left.

The Lakers fell on the road to the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday night, 110-97.

Defense was once again an issue as the Lakers let the Mavericks shoot 53.3% from the field.

Dirk Nowitzki led all scorers with 27 points on 12-of-19 shooting. When the Lakers tried to challenge late, Monta Ellis kept the Mavericks ahead.

Ellis finished with 16 points and Vince Carter gave Dallas 19 off the bench.

The Lakers were led by Jodie Meeks with 24 points. He also contributed six assists, four rebounds and four steals.

Pau Gasol finished with a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds, but struggled in the second half while shooting 5 for 14 for the game.

Wesley Johnson chipped in 17. Kendall Marshall scored 18 with six assists, but turned the ball over six times.

Turnovers, in general, were a problem for the Lakers, who had 20 on the night. The team shot 42.0% from the field while missing eight free throws (18-26).

Shawn Marion didn't play in the second half after suffering a right shoulder contusion in the second quarter.

The Lakers (14-21) lose their eighth game in nine tries. They'll travel to Houston (22-13) to play the Rockets on Wednesday.

The Mavericks (20-15) visit the San Antonio Spurs (27-8), also on Wednesday.

Mavericks 85, Lakers 77 (end of third quarter)

Rapid Reaction: Mavericks 110, Lakers 97
January, 7, 2014
JAN 7

By Ramona Shelburne
ESPNLosAngeles.com

DALLAS -- Pau Gasol remained a Laker on Tuesday after the Cleveland Cavaliers chose to deal Andrew Bynum and a package of draft picks to Chicago for Luol Deng, and for as long as they still have the 33-year-old Spaniard, the Lakers are going to get as much out of him as they can.

When Gasol is in the game these days, he's the unquestioned No. 1 option on offense. It's obvious. Maybe too obvious. Which is why the Dallas Mavericks sent multiple defenders to swarm Gasol just about every time he touched the ball Tuesday night in the Mavs' 110-97 win over the Lakers at the American Airlines Center.

The loss was the Lakers' (14-21) eighth in nine games. As the only All-Star talent on the court for the Lakers these days, expect Gasol to be defended as such from here on unless one of his teammates steps up to become a consistent offensive threat.

Gasol finished with 15 points, 13 rebounds and five assists. The more telling statistic was his 5-for-14 shooting, as Dallas keyed its entire defense around stopping him.

Tuesday night, the Lakers got nice production from Wesley Johnson (17 points), Jodie Meeks (24 points) and Kendall Marshall (18 points, six assists) but virtually nothing from anyone else.

Dirk Nowitzki led Dallas (20-15) with 27 points. Monta Ellis had 16

Pau Gasol’s viewing of “Lion King” musical disrupted because of false trade report
Posted on January 7, 2014 by Mark Medina
DALLAS — Pau Gasol sat in the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood last Saturday night, watching “The Lion King” musical with his parents and younger brother in hopes to experience no worries for the rest of his days.

At intermission, though, Gasol turned on his cell phone and logged onto Twitter. Then, he learned through a false report from KSPN-710AM that the Lakers traded him to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Andrew Bynum.

“I was getting all these messages, ‘Farewell, Pau. Thanks for all your services,” all that stuff,” Gasol recalled after the Lakers’ 110-97 loss Tuesday to the Dallas Mavericks at American Airlines Center. “I guess it’s good to get a heads-up a day before. Most guys don’t get that.”

Most guys also don’t get traded essentially three times only for the deal never to happen. But such is the circle of life for Gasol. The Lakers shipped him over two years ago in a deal that would’ve landed them Chris Paul until the NBA decided otherwise. The other two scenarios stemmed from inacurrate media reports, both during the 2011-12 season and this past week.
