I think the only "realistic" way we could compete with them is if we somehow got LeBron via free agency.

Even with a premium draft pick in this draft, it's still asking a lot of a rookie to be a big part in turning this team into a legitimate contender in their first year.

Also, Kobe is a huge question mark at this point. Can he come back at the level we are used to seeing him at?

The future will definitely be interesting to say the least...

It is a lottery, you don't have to have the worst record.

at LeBron coming here. Why on Earth would he leave a situation like Miami to come play with us? Think about that objectively for a second. Seriously.

Stay patient guys. With the right moves the next three seasons, we could be contenders for a decade. No need to blow our load on a risky signing like Carmelo.

The only way we challange OKC is to sign Durant

On the flip side of the coin: What should OKC do in order to maintain their presumably great power?

Hey, maybe they are also planning on signing one of the big three from Miami, either Wade/Bron/Bosh.

Just for fun. It's not just Lakers who want to improve. Every team does.

Even the defending champion.

Prime Kobe had a nice stretch with a young raw Bynum and role players right before the Gasol deal. The west is tougher and Kobe is older, so it would take not only Embiid, but Mitch pulling something amazing. Love seems a ways off. A lineup of Marshall/Bryant/Johnson/Anthony/Embiid and a bench with defensive players and shooters would put you in the mix. Not terribly realistic, but...well...no but its just unrealistic.

I watched the game with a group of friends tonight, They are all Lakers fans, some for many years. We had a very intresting talk about the Lakers furure.

I mustly just listened and was surprised at where they are with the team.

Trade Gasol to Pheonix? Absolutely and why not give them Steve Nash and, drum roll please, Kobe Byant.

They seemed "post Kobe" though they have deep affection for him they felt the Lakers paid him well and the best thing for the team and him was put him where he has a chance at another title. They didn't like him players with this young group with Gasol gone.

They love Nick Young and see him as "the next Kobe" They like Wes Johnson, Sacre, Farmar and are sure Love will come to the Lakers starters and hope to get some nice players "with all the picks Pheonix will give us."

It won't happen imo but it was fasinating to me how Nick is "their man" now and Kobe "the old man down the rosd."

Must have felt like this when Magic retired.

Nick Young the next Kobe Maybe the last name is deceiving them, but he's 28 years old and dead center in his prime.

Yea, I think they were drinking too much. But, I found it interesting how willingly they were to see Kobe as an ex-Lakers player maybe winning a Championship with Gasol and Nash. They don't see that happening if they all stay with the Lakers.

I can see a scenario where we put together a team that can compete with OKC next year. But lightning will have to strike again, like it did in 08 when we got Gasol. We'll probably have to get Melo and a better coach. Perhaps maybe getting Greg Monroe and a good PG (Bledsoe? Exum?) would do it, but these are all best case scenarios.

Realistically, ever since the lockout I figured we weren't winning any more titles with Kobe. It's really hard to win even one title, especially when you have morons coaching the team and in the FO as well. The basketball gods have done lots of things to show us that our glory days are long gone.

1. It was nothing like this when Magic retired.
2. Nick will never be the "man" of any team, unless it's an absolutely awful team.
3. Kobe won't be traded. Nash probably won't be.

I honestly dont see a quick fix with this team. When Kobe was in his prime we were always a few moves away from being contenders but now that he is at the end of his career we need much more to get going. And even if we do get the pieces, it takes atleast a full season for everyone to gel

TRUTH

Only way to challenge them is steal Kevin Durant in 2016. That's about it.

Only way we can possibly challenge OKC is if KD or RW leaves.

Bigger issue is how can we become more like the Spurs and not have our team's fortunes hinge entirely on a superstar or bust approach to building our team?

Darren collison
Wes johnson (defensive versatility and cheap price)
Kobe
Melo
Embiid or vonleh

Alternatives would be

Smart or exum
Wes johnson
Kobe
Melo
Blatche

Coach: jvg

Both are attainable imo. Melo is the biggest factor but with a clear enough vision it seems like a feasible sell. Sell him on the new talented rooks and coach as well as the opportunity to win now.

The realistic 2 year plan would be:

Pau
Vonleh/Randle
Young
Kobe
Nash

Farmar
Kelly
Hill or FA
Marshall
Meeks
Sacre
Henry

JVG coach

Nash will be coach when JVG is done.
