There are very likely other NBA teams (like Phoenix) that can offer better packages of draft picks and building blocks in the hope of resigning Love. Why should Minnesota not trade him to one of them... if at all? |
Lakers MUST get another 1st rd pick in order to trade theirs.
If Minnesota swaps it's pick with the Lakers, they get a top 5 pick and build mini-Spain with Pau and Rubio.
Lakers would have Love and a top 20 pick with cap room to sign another top level player.
The reason Minnesota should do this NOW is because no one is offering a top 5 pick for Love next year when he can opt out in the off-season, which he will.
It's Deron Williams all over again. |
The Lakers need to have a First Round pick with a Clean Title and the Minnesota 2014 First Round pick doesn't meet that criteria.
Future Traded Pick Details

Minnesota's 1st round pick to Phoenix protected for selections 1-13 in 2014, 1-12 in 2015 or 1-12 in 2016; if Minnesota has not conveyed a 1st round pick to Phoenix by 2016, then Minnesota will instead convey its 2016 2nd round pick and 2017 2nd round pick to Phoenix [Minnesota-New Orleans-Phoenix, 7/27/2012]
