I thought of this before Dallas went 2-0 into Miami. Miami had 3 straight home games to make it a series. No surprize they've been in the mid-30's in free throw attempts while Dallas has been in the mid-20's. Shat and Wayne disappeared in Dallas, but in Miami they've regained their "MDE" identities. Hell, Howard finished with more fouls than points in game 4. Looks like Miami will win this series, just because of the format.

Shat was 0-6 (without Kobe) before this crap. Format was a huge reason Detriot beat us in 04'.

Disagree. The Heat have ALL of the pressure here. If they lose game 5, they're done. They aren't winning two in Dallas. Even if the Mavs lose game 5, they go home to decide it. I think 2-3-2 favors the higher ranked team, by a large margin.

Completely disagree here. Miami won by what? 20 tonight? Miami has all of the odds in their favor. If the Mavericks lose the next game, they're done. End of story. Favors the away team, not the home team. Imagine of the Heat won one game in Dallas, like Detriot did in 04'. They would've been in control of the series. Only having to win 3 games at home to win the NBA Finals. It is much better to be an away team than it is to be a home team in the NBA Finals.

Anyone have the date when the format changed?

If the lower ranked team can build momentum in the middle games, they *can* win, yes.

There are *more* home games (4) than away (3) games. So, the momentum thing can help even the tides, but in this case, both teams are incredibly good home teams.

Even though game 5 theoretically favors Miami, even if they do win, 6 and 7 in Dallas will be another story altogether, as the crowd will get their transition game going. Even if the Heat lead 3-2, they will have a hell of a time trying to fight the tempo and momentum Dallas builds from their crowd.

It favors the home team big-time. Check the stats, but I don't think very many teams have ever won all the middle three games.

They mentioned it a few times thus far during the series. Only one home team has won all of the 3 middle games since the 2-3-2 format.
The team? Detroit in '04.

Yeah, the format has historically hurt the lower rated team because the team with a lesser regular season record is not often going to win three games in a row, regardless of where they are played. As mentioned, the '04 piece of (bleep) Pistons are the only team to ever do it, and they required an opponent meltdown.

Just a bad series. Even when the Lakers got off to early leads or good starts, you just knew it was a matter of time before Detroit took over.

The stats say otherwise.

The 2-3-2 format was first used in 1985.
Since that time...
Visiting teams are 49-69 (41.5%) in Finals games (49-73 if you count this year's Finals so far)
The team with homecourt has won the title 16 of 21 times.
The 5 teams without homecourt that won the title are: 85 Lakers, 93 Bulls, 95 Rockets, 98 Bulls, 04 Pistons.
The 2004 Pistons are the only team to ever win the middle three games at home.
3 teams have won the middle three games on the road: 90 Pistons, 91 Bulls, 01 Lakers

This series seems to be playing out similarly to last season's Finals. The Spurs won the first 2 (big) at home. Detroit won the next 2 (big) at home. In game 5, the Spurs were able to sneak one and head back to San Antonio with 2 home games in their pocket to close out the Pistons.

Which teams. And who were they playing against?

I named the 5 teams that won without homecourt, so the other 16 would be the last 16 championship teams that were not one of those 5.
