Two Left… An 0-16 stretch between the third quarter and fourth quarter did the Lakers in.

“It felt like forever when we didn’t score a bucket, a long stretch,” Ryan Kelly said, crediting Memphis with slowing the game down on them.

It’s rare that their offense can’t get put the ball in the hoop, but it was the offense that let them down more than once in this game.

In the first half as they built a 7-point and 9-point lead twice (good defense, leading to easy transition hoops). It was poor Laker shot selection (long, challenged early offense chucks), however, that allowed Memphis to reel them in twice.

In the third quarter Memphis tightened the clamps down and slowed the tempo, and the Lakers were outscored 34-17 to seal their fate. Another April loss for L.A., falling 102-90.

Pau was shown on the scoreboard late in the fourth quarter and got a big round of applause from the Staples fans. Too bad he couldn’t suit up one more time for the Lakers, but he’s been ruled out for these final games. This may have been his last appearance on the Laker squad.

Meeks -- -- He led the Lakers in scoring. In the first half when the Lakers were competing, they were getting turnovers and stops and getting out on the break for easy hoops. That’s having your D create your offense and Meeks is very good at getting out with speed. He needs to be careful, however, to be putting too much emphasis on leak outs. When guys are battling on the glass, we need everyone to help get the stop. Meeks and Marshall, our starting backcourt, had no rebounds in this game. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 7-12 shooting (1-3 from three, 5-5 from the line) to go with 1 assist and 1 foul in 39 minutes. He was a -19. The Action: He swished a baseline floater, expecting a whistle. He swished a wing three on the kickout. He scored a layup busting out on the Laker steal. He missed a layup on the break. He wouldn’t be denied next time, going right at Prince and powering in a layup on the break. Quick first step past Allen on the baseline and he drew FTs, he made both. He missed a tough, challenged three up against the shotclock. Second Half: He missed a three straight away to start the half. He was fouled on a wing three and made all three FTs. Smart cut from the wing to bail out Marshall on the perimeter after he had picked up his dribble and Meeks scored the layup off the pass. He airballed a floater in transition expecting a call. He knocked a ball loose on a reach around to get a stop. He sank an open baseline jumper, automatic on that good a look. He missed a reverse layup. He scored a token layup on our last possession.

Hill -- -- Kind of a quiet double-double from Hill tonight, finishing with 10 and 10. He reeled in the aggressive perimeter chucking. He battled for offensive boards (one led to a nice pass to Wes cutting for a score, the other was a follow-up score on a missed Sacre dunk). Lakers needed more of that kind of hustle from him and others if they were going to stay with the Griz. Once the Grizzlies slow things down and grind away at you, that’s where he’s got to really go to work. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 5-9 shooting to go with 10 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a -16. The Action: He dunked off the pass from Kelly over the top of the D to start the game. He swished a very short baseline jumper when his man sagged off him. He battled for an offensive board, then dumped it off to a cutting Johnson for a layup. Early offense chuck from the wing, not good shot selection. He blocked a shot, recovered it, pushed it out and traveled to give it back. He swished an 18-footer on the wing on the next possession. He missed a one-handed flip in attempt. He couldn’t power in a layup over the challenging D. He stripped Randolph in the backcourt to get a steal. Second Half: He faced up, spun and hit the easy one at the front of the rim. He pumpfaked several times in a swarm of defenders and was blocked. He cleaned up a Sacre missed dunk with a putback. XXX

Kelly -- -- Some early foul trouble for Kelly. He had to body up Marc Gasol on D, that didn’t help, but it wasn’t the cause of the early foul trouble. D’Antoni went with Sacre in the second half to match up better. Not a great came from Kelly on either end. He couldn’t get more than a single board, he was inefficient on the shot and only seemed to help the team when we were out of it for good. He did have a very nice block on Conley that he got a bad whistle on. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 2-8 shooting (1-3 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 1 board, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 5 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a -16. The Action: Nice feed over the top of the D to Hill for the dunk. He charged on a floater over Gasol. He was stripped on the perimeter and fouled (his second with 8:39 left in the first and he had to sit). He was fouled on a three, he made two of the three FTs. He picked up his third foul hitting a cutter and had to sit. Second Half: Off the bench, he up-faked, attacked to his left, took contact and banked in the And-1 lefty one-hander (so nice), he made the FT. He airballed a rushed baseline jumper up against the shotclock. He drew a charge on Gasol away from the ball. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He attacked and missed the runner. He found Wes open for a couple of jumpers. He missed a layup on the break. He drained a three at the top of the arc on a kickout. Wow, looked like some great D on Conley on iso, blocking his shot from behind on an excellent recovery, but he was called for the phantom foul. He missed a sideline three on a kickout.

Marshall -- -- He seemed a little more aggressive offensively in this one, but was a point and assist away from the double-double. He had some good finishes in the paint: a floater, a pull-up at the elbow and a layup with his off-hand. Lakers need to see more of those kinds of combinations from him next year, assuming he’s back, which seems likely since he’s cheap. Defensively, he was stronger in the first half with a couple of steals and some disruptive help D. He never grabbed a board, though, in this game. Got to rebound as a team. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-9 shooting (1-4 from three) to go with 9 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers and no fouls in 29 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He swiped the ball on a sideline double team. He missed a wing three. He attacked the paint and hit Meeks for the open three. He snagged a bad pass in the paint and pushed out to Meeks busting out for the layup. He attacked the lane to his right with the shotclock low, he ball-faked and scored the layup. Great double team in the post to help force a turnover. He threw a backdoor lob off the glass, wasn’t close to Nick. He missed a long three, left open straight away. He hit Wes busting out for the slam. Next time down, he hit a pull-up elbow jumper on the break. He attacked the paint and swished the floater (that’s the shot he needs to perfect over the summer). Second Half: His bounce pass to Hill rolling to the hoop was easily picked off. He missed an elbow pull-up jumper. He attacked the paint and kicked to Sacre for the short jumper. He measured and missed a wing three on a kickout. He picked up his dribble on the perimeter with the shotclock low, but Meeks cut and Marshall hit him for the layup. He missed the wing jumper. He wrapped a sneaky bounce pass around a defender to Sacre on his way to the hoop for FTs. Bad idea forcing a bounce pass to Kelly in a crowd, turnover. He sank a wing three out of a timeout. He hit a cutting Sacre for the layup.

Johnson -- -- A strong 15-15 double-double from Wes. I love it when he hits the boards and battles on the glass. He just needs to own the glass more often with that athleticism, especially from the SF. At PF, he’ll be in position for a lot of boards, but at the SF he has to make an effort. Offensively, some poor chucks from the perimeter that twice allowed the Grizzlies to reel the Lakers in during the first half. Stu was hitting on it the second time Wes did it in the game. On that one, Wes threw up a long jumper standing on the three line after he couldn’t create a shot, then couldn’t pass to someone right away. The Grizzlies rallied during this stretch. Earlier it was on a couple of early offense three’s with men on. Those killed the Laker momentum. Phil would have called those indulgent shots. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-12 shooting (3-5 from three) to go with 15 boards (3 offensive), 4 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 40 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He missed a chuck from three in early offense. Another sideline three chuck, momentum sucker (Lakers called a timeout shortly later on a 7-0 Memphis run). He swished an open three when Farmar kicked out to him (that’s all you need to do, don’t force it). He trailed the break and Farmar lobbed behind for Wes to hammer it down. He had nothing, looked to pass, didn’t see a pass, then chucked and missed a long jumper (another poor shot that helps an opponent rally…another 7-0 Grizzlies run ensued). He took the pass on the break, soared over the D and slammed with both hands. Poor inbounds pass to Farmar and it was easily stolen. Second Half: He was blocked on a reverse. He missed a forced corner three up against the shotclock. Poor pass, forcing it to Young and he turned it over. He airballed a quick-fire wing jumper trying to beat a shotclock. He swished a long wing jumper on a kickout. He sank an open corner three off the swing pass from Kelly.

Young -- -- He had one of the highlight plays of the season in the first half. He took a pass baseline, met a help defender in air and 360’d around him in air and spun up and in a reverse on the other side of the rim. Always able to put on a show. Staples took a liking to Nick. He was a tremendous scorer off the bench all season. He has an option to return to the team next year, but he’s earned a bigger payday and will likely cash in. This seems like his last game in the purple and gold in Staples. Too bad. He probably found a home here. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-12 shooting (4-8 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 steal, 1 block and 2 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a -18. The Action: He swished a wing three off the handoff on his first touch. He missed a three on his next attempt shortly later. He missed a tough elbow jumper. He missed a three coming off the weakside screen out of a timeout. He sank a sideline three on the Farmar pass. He missed a long three against the shotclock. He drained a wing three in transition off the no-look pass from Farmar. He was rejected trying to power up. Wow, he cut backdoor, took the pass and went 360 around a help defender and spun in the reverse layup (love the English on that finish). He had 11 points at the half. Second Half: He drained a step-back three in early offense. He nailed his man to the floor off the dribble, but couldn’t finish at the rim. He missed an off-balance chuck from three.

Farmar -- -- The Lakers had a 9-point lead in the second quarter off of Farmar’s offensive orchestration. He was really running the show well. In the second half, that all changed. He was turnover prone and ineffective. The Lakers went through a huge dry spell when he came in the game and that buried them for good. Good help on the defensive boards. He didn’t get credit for many, but he was back there tipping them to teams. We needed a little more of that from others to help control the defensive glass. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-10 shooting (1-4 from three) to go with 3 boards, 7 assists, 4 turnovers and 1 foul in 24 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He hit Young for the three. Great bounce pass to a rolling Sacre for the slam. He pushed up the break and no-looked it back behind him to Young for the three. He worked the two-man game and hit Wes for the open three. He forced a three next time down and missed. Better work off the two-man sequence and he hit the pull-up 17-footer. He took an outlet off the Memphis turnover, threw it up and Wes soared to hammer it down (that forced a timeout). He couldn’t hit the running, Nash-like one-footer off the screen. He sank a pull-up three trailing the break. Second Half: His bounce pass was picked off. He missed a wing three. He iso’d and missed a pull-up jumper. He attacked and was blocked. He missed a runner against the shotclock and wondered where the whistle was. He threw a wing pass away. He missed a wing three. He had a layup goaltended it looked like with no call.

Sacre -- -- Strong defensive game from Sacre. He was holding the line pretty well against the physical Memphis frontcourt. Kelly started the game, but Sacre was moved into the starting lineup in the second half because of his defensive toughness. He helped prevent any kind of post-up game from the Grizzlies. He didn’t prevent the slew of offensive boards we gave up. Memphis beat us up 16-5 on the offensive glass. Sacre had just 2 boards in the game. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-8 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 3 steals, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He slammed off the screen-roll with Farmar. He missed the open FT jumper off the two-man game. He wasn’t paying attention to the bounce pass from Farmar on the two-man game and the ball went right by him, turnover. Second Half: He swished he midrange baseline jumper off the Marshall drive and dish. He couldn’t finish the two-handed dunk, but Hill cleaned it up. He missed an open baseline jumper a few feet further than the other one form the same spot. Sensational D on iso on the other end, moving his feet to take a charge on Randolph who tried to create against him. He was called for a travel trying to face up. He was blocked from behind in the paint. He blocked a layup in transition. He finished a layup in transition himself shortly later. He swiped a ball away from a guard on help D. He drew FTs off the bounce pass from Marshall in the paint, he made one. He was stripped as he tried to power up at the rim. He kicked out to Kelly for the open three. Strong cut to the hoop and Marshall found him for the layup.

D’Antoni -- -- He brought in Young just a little more than 3 minutes into the game when Kelly picked up his second foul… Up 5, he brought in Sacre for Wes and Farmar for Marshall with 4 minutes left. The score was tied up a 40 seconds later and D’Antoni called a timeout. Laker shot selection very poor in that stretch… Wes back in for Hill late in the quarter… Good first quarter by the Lakers, getting some steals off tight D. They generally didn’t give up anything real easy… The Lakers led 27-23 after the first quarter… He started a Sacre, Kelly, Johnson, Young, Farmar lineup… The Lakers pulled out to a 9-point lead and forced a Memphis timeout… Kelly back in foul trouble and sat for Meeks… He sat Sacre and Farmar for Hill and Marshall after 5 minutes… The Lakers trailed 53-52 at the half. The Lakers shot 54%, the Grizzlies shot 43%. The Lakers had an 18-9 advantage on the break. The Griz had a 27-18 advantage on the break… He started a Sacre, Hill, Johnson, Meeks, Marshall unit, sitting Kelly who had 3 fouls in 6 minutes… The Lakers D got a little soft midway through the quarter and the Grizzlies took advantage with some easy ones at the rim. D’Antoni called timeout down 7… He brought in Kelly, Young and Famrar for Marshall, Hill and Johnson… The lead ballooned as the Laker offense completely stalled out… They trailed 87-69 heading into the fourth quarter… He started a Hill, Kelly, Johnson, Young, Farmar lineup… The Lakers were 0-16 before finally scoring (down 20)… Garbage time…

I'm tired of seeing 7-foot Sacre only get 2 boards in 30 minutes. Seems like it happens all the time.

Kelly too--6'11", 1 board in 25+ minutes. Even that 6'3" power forward in your local rec league can get more boards than that in half the time.

You beat MDA's team by slowing the game down. It has always been a proved way of beating the Suns. That's one of the reason they couldn't beat the Spurs and another reason the Lakers almost beat them with that lousy team we had.
