LA will probably look to bring in a difference maker or two with the majority of it's cap room this offseason. That means Mitch is going to have to go bargain shopping to fill out the roster. Thoughts on potential bargain signings (generally $2 million or less)? Here are a few -
Laker Guards/Forwards section
Nick Young (P-opt, U) - Most talented of the Laker tryout squad. He is probably worth too much on the open market to return for under $2 million.
Kent Bazemore (R) - As Trevor Ariza once was in his time in the purple and gold, Bazemore might be the fastest player in the league in a straight line. Solid ball handling skills and a great motor could make him a solid bench player.
Marshon Brooks (U) - talented guard who may just need the right situation to become a solid rotation guy. Works hard on both sides of the ball.
Xavier Henry (U) - talented guard who may just need the right situation to become a solid rotation guy. Works hard on both sides of the ball. More explosive than Brooks but less refined offensive game.
Jodie Meeks (U) - Undersized SG with a ton of heart and solid 3pt shot. Good motor.
Wesley Johnson (U) - Among the most athletic players in the league but spends most of his time on the court lost or confused. Streaky shooter and issues with lack of intensity.
- Others -
Jan Vesely (U) - Super athletic 7-footer who can anchor a little, get out on the break and finish with the best of them.
Ekpe Udoh (U) - Good anchor who has been injury laiden so far in his career. Milwaukee has Sanders and Henson, t/f little use in resigning Udoh.
Brandon Rush (U) - Coming off an ACL injury, Rush hasn't really played for Utah this season. In the three seasons prior Rush was quietly in the top 10 in 3pt% on a significant number of shots. IIRC, the only other player to do so was Kyle Korver.
Dante Cunningham (U) - Hussle forward with a good midrange shot. Rebounding is weak though.
James Johnson (U) - Good forward. Unfortunately, may be showing too much in Memphis to be had on the cheap.
CJ Miles (U) - Good shooter and system guy from his Utah days.
PJ Tucker (U) - Bullying SF with a great motor. Played a good role with PHO this year but Sarver is going to have to pay Bledsoe and has 100 draft picks to replace Tucker.
Special Mention: Shawn Marion - Will Cuban let him go? Will he want to finally join LA? Does he have enough left for it to matter? _________________ Austin Reaves keeps his game tight, like Kobe Bryant on game night.

Okafor would be a solid low rent get. I wonder if he won't see offers north of MLE (if he proves healthy) just based on his defense and rebounding. Even Kwame got $3 million a year and Okafor should do better than that.
Another name that came to mind is Earl Clark. He rebounds well and is a fair defender. If you get him for $2 million, he can fill a role. _________________ Austin Reaves keeps his game tight, like Kobe Bryant on game night. |

Chris Singleton intrigues me.
He can play the 3 and 4 position and also plays good defense.
plus he is only 24 yrs old. |

Okafor may not play again. Didn't he have some major spine/back issue? _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals |

The hardest thing to find would be a solid rim protector for the minimum. Ekpe Udoh is an interesting choice. He can't stay healthy, but he would be lighting in a bottle to at least backup the middle.
Big picture is there will still be the bargain players available. Mitch did a great job bringing some in, and MDA gave them PT even if it was mostly due to everyone getting hurt. I'd like to see them have enough for Johnson, Young and Farmar but worst case scenario they have a few SGs that their best option would be to return. |

Interesting guy (though not a D'Antoni fit): Greg Smith
Houston has no use for him, but in limited minutes, this guy can play.
only 23, he's a decent restricted PF who, IMO, is a bargain and would get minutes with us. Houston wouldn't match a short 2 year deal IMO
He had a 19 point, 19 rebound game last year. Hustles and can play.
I think we could sign this young guy on the cheap. |

I haven't seen much of Mullens but isn't he just a bigger, slower version of Ryan Kelly? _________________ Austin Reaves keeps his game tight, like Kobe Bryant on game night. |

I was targeting Mullens before he came to the Clips. He's definitely not a slower version of Kelly. He's got length, a good 3pt stroke, and would be a nice addition in terms of size, youth, and untapped potential. He can play. |

While not a great defender, Mullens is better than any defensive big we have now. _________________ RIP mom. 11-21-1933 to 6-14-2023. |

I would much rather have him for the vet min than for what we are paying Kaman. _________________ RIP mom. 11-21-1933 to 6-14-2023. |

In order for us to determine which FA's will actually fit into the system, we first have to look at which coach is coming back. With the Lakers making the tough decision of either letting go of D'Antoni, thus paying him the final year of his contract or keeping him, it will point on who we have to sign. If they sign a guy like Okafor with D'Antoni at the helm, I think it will be useless. _________________ Check out my stuff:

Bleak picture...i would like to keep Xavier Henry, he's still young with room to improve and has that lefty + eurostep combo similar to Manu and Harden that's difficult to find around the league, and also difficult to stop. I like Bazemore as well and Vesely is a decent player, i've been watching some Denver games and he is a solid young player, shoots a high percentage, can rebound and play the SF and PF. Oh, and he's also a 7 footer. |

Blake said he wants to come back to the Lakers, so he is an option for sure. If Farmar leaves we need to bring back Bagel (can't believe I'm saying that).
Another point guard who could be had for cheap is Jimmer Fredette. A lot of people around here won't like hearing that, because Jimmer isn't known for his defense. But he can stretch the floor and his defense is improving. Even Thibodeau was praising him the other night for his ball denial.
I wouldn't mind bringing back a few ex-Lakers: Trevor Ariza and Earl Clark could possibly be had. Clark has shown that he really isn't that special, but for the minimum, his versatility might be nice to have. We have to remember that we likely won't have much to spend on filling out the end of our bench because Kobe's contract is so large. _________________ Good Laker book I recommend, "The Biggest What-If's in Lakers History" http://www.amazon.com/Biggest-What-Ifs-Angeles-History-ebook/dp/B00BB3OEC0 |
