In January 1976, Riperton was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a radical mastectomy.[3] By the time of diagnosis, the cancer had metastasized and she was given about six months to live. Despite the grim prognosis, she continued recording and touring. She was one of the first celebrities to go public with her breast cancer diagnosis, but did not disclose she was terminally ill. In 1977, she became a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society. In 1978, she received the American Cancer Society's Courage Award which was presented to her at the White House by President Jimmy Carter. She died at age 31 on July 12, 1979.[3][4]
It's sad that she died young, but that song got so overplayed back in the day that mere thought of it is like fingernails on a chalkboard for me. I think I'd rather listen to Feelings.

Minnie was an incredible Pop singer with a beautiful voice that legitimately spanned 4 octaves. That her signature song was "Loving you" is a shame in that she did some great stuff including a duet album with Peabo Bryson.
IMO, her most haunting song was recorded as she knew that she knew that she was dying of breast cancer.

Loving You is an R&B classic. Nothing shameful about it. There might be three people on earth who could improve on her vocal performance of that song.
Man, the song was banal and she did nothing to make it less so. There are a great deal of Jazz singers who could have made it special. Billie would have torn it up into bits and killed it. I'd love to see how someone like Amy Winehouse would have done it. Or Lauryn Hill. _________________ “It took many years of vomiting up all the filth I’d been taught about myself, and half-believed, before I was able to walk on the earth as though I had a right to be here.”

Stomp on her grave some more.
Not my intent at all. I love her as a pop singer. I love some of her work. It's just that that song being her signature song is as grating as the fact that for the general public Louis Armstrong, who completely, utterly and dominantly transformed American musicianship and American singing forever, is most well known for "What a Wonderful World." _________________ “It took many years of vomiting up all the filth I’d been taught about myself, and half-believed, before I was able to walk on the earth as though I had a right to be here.”
