If you aren't Cleveland.

I'd pump the brakes on this one...
Sam Amico
@SamAmicoFSO
Told by Cavs source details reported about meeting with Jazz free agent Gordon Hayward have been "greatly exaggerated."
Amico is a hack, but he's basically become the media mouthpiece of the Cavs front office since David Griffin took over as GM, so this is likely coming straight from the Cavs. |

Hayward's stats have got worse every year he has been in the league. He shot 41% and 30% on 3's last year. Now someone decides he needs a big contract. _________________ "It's just a job. Grass grows, birds fly, waves pound the sand. I beat people up."-The Greatest |

$63M for a mediocre 6th man? Get the.... This is why Cavs are perennially in the lottery. If Jazz are smart, they talk up match and then pull the rug.
This 100X worse than Luke's contract. Right up there with maxing out Tim Thomas. Rudy Gay's 19M will become 2nd worse contract. _________________ Alltime lineup: Magic | Kobe | MJ | Hakeem | KAJ |

Yuck. Dan Gilbert's gonna need a few more #1s to recover from that eyesore of a contract. |

see these kind of moves by the GM's should be fined worthy. no joke. they should say any loser team thats over paying role players will have to forfeit their ability to get a top 10 draft pick. no matter what their record is. they will be pushed to 11th.
STOP MAKING DUMB DECISIONS. then crying later when a new cba is due. _________________ LAL4K3RS wrote: He(Kobe) is the white haired kung fu master that you realize is older than dirt but can still kick your arse when in a sitting position drinking a nice herbal tea. |

yeah, it's been a bit shocking this off season.. i was expecting some over paying here and there still but it's as bad as ever.. pretty hard to take the owners complaining too seriously when all this massive overpaying is still going on... |

Don't think its fine worthy, but I think the commissioners office should ignore any more cries for help from Dan Gilbert. Those bums had 3 #1 draft picks in 4 years. If you can't do anything with that then you have no business owning an NBA team. |

Who the (bleep) would have imagined a few years ago Gordon Hayward getting a max contract? I thought players were getting way overpaid a few years ago, but this off-season takes the cake. |

What the hell?
You know what's really crazy about this? The Jazz will probably match. |

Here is a Charlotte writer's justification for this:
Quote: | I still expect the Jazz to match the offer, in which case the Hornets will strike out instead of hit a home run with this big swing (a sign-and-trade is also a possibility, and that compromise may also be the way this ends up going). But this obvious overpayment is about the only way you can get a guy who averages 16 points, five assists and five rebounds and who is healthy and only 24 years old.
I like it. I like the gamble. If the Jazz don't match -- and they are reportedly $30 million under the salary cap, with far more room than Charlotte -- then Hayward will make more than Al Jefferson and everyone else on the Hornets, and he obviously will not be their best player. That would be either Jefferson or point guard Kemba Walker, and Walker is going to command a similar max contract at some point.
But Jefferson and Walker want to win, and this is how you do it. You sign a guy like Hayward instead of a loose cannon like Lance Stephenson. You play Hayward more at shooting guard -- he can do either that or small forward, but if he stays at shooting guard more you can still use MKG's defensive prowess more effectively. He becomes more of a scoring threat immediately than Gerald Henderson is from outside, which gives Jefferson (who Hayward knows how to play with, having done so in Utah) more room inside.
Now the Jazz have said all along they are going to match whatever Hayward gets, but remember they also apparently balked at paying him $13 million a year at one point last season (and offered $12 million). This contract averages $15.75 million per year.
If the Jazz really want to mess with the Hornets, they will hold them hostage for the maximum of three days starting Thursday at 12:01 a.m. when the NBA contract moratorium is lifted and then say they are going to match at the last minute over the weekend. That will hurt the Hornets in terms of trying to sign someone else, because all their salary-cap freedom will be tied up with Hayward as of Thursday.
But that's OK. This is the way you do business in the NBA. The salaries are never going to work out perfectly, and some guys will be underpaid and some guys overpaid on every roster. Hayward is not a superstar, and this is superstar money. But if you are going to get better, this is the sort of gamble you must occasionally take. |

I guess it sucks to be a small market team, but I really question this sort of reasoning. If this guy is right, the Hornets will have to give Kemba Walker a max contract. This kind of reasoning sounds more like a player agent's wet dream than a sensible way of constructing a winning team. |

Quote: | Agent: Jazz retain Gordon Hayward
Tim Legler discusses the news that the Cavaliers are hosting restricted free-agent forward Gordon Hayward and are prepared to offer him a max contract.
Tags: Gordon Hayward, Utah Jazz, NBA
The Utah Jazz have retained Gordon Hayward after matching the Charlotte Hornets' four-year, $63 million offer sheet to the restricted free agent.
Mark Bartelstein, Hayward's agent, told ESPN.com's Marc Stein that the Jazz made "a great statement" to his client by matching the Hornets' offer.
"We're extremely appreciative to Michael Jordan, Rich Cho, Steve Clifford and the Hornets for wanting Gordon and making Gordon feel like such a critical piece to the team they're building," Bartelstein said. "That's something that's really appreciated by Gordon and myself, not just the contract but the whole presentation that they made.
"But It's always a wonderful thing when your own organization values you so much that they'd match a contract like this. I think it makes a great statement to Gordon about how they feel about him and value him."
The Jazz previously had stated over the past several months that they intended to match any offers for the 24-year-old Hayward, who averaged career highs of 16.2 points, 5.1 rebounds and 5.2 assists last season.
The Jazz could have kept Hayward off the open market had they negotiated a contract extension with the versatile swingman back in October.
But talks broke down last year, with Hayward reportedly seeking a four-year contract valued at $13 million annually and Utah reportedly holding firm at $12 million annually.
Utah's decision to match Charlotte's offer sheet was reported earlier Saturday by Yahoo! Sports.
The 6-foot-8 Hayward returns to a rebuilding Utah team that also features Trey Burke, Derrick Favors, Enes Kanter, Alec Burks and promising rookie Dante Exum. |
