Why? He completely tanked it when he was here on the Lakers. Didn't even try defensively because he was pissed about the offense. |
I was also pissed about the offense. I think GP sorted it out with Phil. _________________ "Now, if life is coffee, then the jobs, money & position in society are the cups. Then he helped Shaq and Wade get a championship two years later by actually proving he could still play good defense in the playoffs and finals. Seriously, the hell with him.
Tanking in the Finals should never be excused. |

Ya, I have to agree, GP is a huge trash talker and competitor, but the sad thing is Odom lacks the mental toughness to shrug it off...this kinda stuff or one bad call could easily distract a player for the rest of the game & is exactly what GP did when he played, throw you off your game with either touch defense or talking trash. |

Considering his relationship with KB, I think LA has a better shot at landing him than the Bucks. Plus, Kidd is a douche and will do something to piss him off, just like he did to PJ Carlesimo. |

Don't think there will be problems with Kidd and GP. They're close friends. They grew up together in Oakland. |

I enjoyed watching GP during his playing days. It was NBA entertainment at its best/worst when LO went after GP. Old school playing may just not translate to today's game rules - Flagrant Fouls, Political Correctness, has changed the game. This team needs experienced coaching on the bench. |

Yup, he's really the reason why Kobe doesn't have 6 rings.
He never got the triangle offense, nor did he tried too hard to learn it.
That 04' finals was a massacre by a crappy but feisty Detroit team. |

I like it. We need an aspect of defense from our coaching staff. GP doesn't seem to be the most articulate, but he is capable of garnering respect. I'm on board. _________________ Good Laker book I recommend, "The Biggest What-If's in Lakers History" http://www.amazon.com/Biggest-What-Ifs-Angeles-History-ebook/dp/B00BB3OEC0 |

That usually happens to guys at the end of their career. They're resistance to change, especially when they're been successful in a previous coaching philosophy. See Pau Gasol circa 2013. |

In a summer that has thus far been underwhelming, this would be a huge plus for the team and for team morale in general. Crossing my fingers that the Lakers get this one right, bring the glove onboard. _________________ "I was laying myself on the line by saying, if this doesn't work in three to four years, if we're not back on the top then I will step down because that means I have failed,"

A Long time back Kobe sought out Gary Payton to give him some pointers on his own defense. Back when Kobe was completely shutting down VC and others for stretches
Can he teach full team defense or only man to man.. Maybe him and Kobe combined
He played here too and was raised here.. He shall pick here |

To all the members who say its too much of a gamble because GP has never had any coaching experience, y'all need to realize Phil Jackson never had any coaching experience until Doug Collins brought him along as an assistant.
Also Pat Riley never had any experience until Paul Westhead brought him along as an assistant.
I think Gary Payton is a win , win Situation.
You need to get coaches who obviously know the game and can relate with the players.
GP, Coop, and Madsen would be great IMO. _________________ "Tryin' to get that Kobe number, One Over Jordan"

I like GP and think he could help improve our defense. He is also a mentor to DeRozan who is more likely to come here in 2016 than Durant. |
