What I don't understand about this discussion is that it seems to me that the small forward position is really made up of two distinct sub-positions: offensive sf and defensive sf. At any given time on the floor, the Lakers need someone to fill both positions, but it doesn't have to be the same person. For example, on offense we might have Randle in the post and Kelly on the wing. Defensively, at the same time we might have Kelly defending the post and Randle defending the wing. So, when Randle and Kelly are on the floor together--and with the aforementioned assignments--who is the sf and who is the pf? It isn't so much about positions as the ability to match up with one's opponents on defense while creating mismatches on offense.

Given that in some offenses it is hard to distinguish between the sg and sf roles makes this discussion even more complex (most versions of the Princeton offense, for example, don't distinguish between the pg, sg, sf and pf positions on offense--http://www.nytimes.com/1991/02/25/sports/carril-demands-versatility.html).

imo xavier will be the eventual starter. But right now Wes has the core that Scott needs, and that's defense first. No question wes can be a Batum/sefolosha type. a year of kobe in his ear should d the trick.

also, randle isnt gonna be a beast that fast. mitch has already hinted that it'll be a "process" i see baby steps for randle.

How many times will people get burned by Wesley Johnson's "potential". I expect little to no improvement in Wes's game next season. He's been in the league four seasons and more or less he's still the same player he was on draft day .
WEAKNESSES:
- Ability to get to free throw line
- Go-to scoring mentality
- Ability to create own shot
- Advanced ball-handling skills
- Limited upside?
- Physical Toughness
- Older than class peers

Wesley's defense doesn't make up for his offense. He's our best perimeter defender by default (not because he's an elite stopper). On offense, the opposing defenses don't respect him and that hurts our floor spacing every play down.

I get the argument: this team has enough offense, we need defense. But is Wesley's defense gonna make up for boozer subpar post defense? Or Hill's lack of experience as a rim protector? Or lin's gambling defensive style? Our roster's defensive difficiencies is like a dry-well. And Wesley Johnson is a cup of water being poured inside it. Doesn't really make it a working well.

This team is what it is. Our offense is gonna win us games moreso than our defense. It seems like wishful thinking that this roster will be an above average defensive squad and Wesley will be a big reason why. But I hope I'm wrong.

Wes is what he is at this point.

At this juncture, he needs to stop trying to be a player he's not meant to be. Hit 3s, cut, rebound, and defend. Don't work on taking people off the dribble, posting, etc. Keep it simple Wes.

This was the knock against him. He was already 23 when he had his breakout year at Syracuse. He was much older than his draft class.
