One thing is for sure the addition of Boozer and Ellington turns out very critical as far as softening the blow of losing Gasol and Meeks.... Those two additions are huge as far as helping compensate for the loss of these two players that left the team....

.... then there is Linn who is clearly an upgrade over the loss of Farmar thankfully....

.... and finally with most of the role players fortunately remaining from last year and with the additions of Randle, Clarkson, Ellington and Davis the Lakers are arguably a better than last year on paper (that is assuming Boozer can play at a decent level who is undoubtedly a key to the Lakers success this year with the loss of Pau).....

.... How much better is the big-time question of course.... Randle and surprisingly perhaps even more so Clarkson and to some extent Ellington could all be huge keys to this teams success beyond the need for the vets like Boozer, Kobe and Nash to hopefully be able to turn it up a notch....

I like the detail and effort but the grading system is way off in my opinion and I also think an awful lot of spin was used on the Lakers writeup. The Lakers were NOT rebuilding. They purposely set up their contracts to be able to buy a championship roster this offseason and they missed on all of the big targets. LeBron, Love, Irving, Wade, Bosh, Carmelo, George, Bledsoe, Lowry, etc will not be Lakers anytime soon. If they get an A by missing out on all of their targets, what grade would they have received had they actually landed one or more of them?

Great post clef. You nailed it on the head. Homerism can be blinding sometimes. Just like last season, this team is a long shot to make the playoffs. Just like last season, we are waiting for an impact free agent who will dramatically improve our team next offseason (why we signed so many cap friendly contracts. Thing is, there isn't a FA down the road that looks get-able. The same reporters who said we wouldnt sign Dwight, melo, and lebron are saying we won't get a top tier FA (like Durant) moving forward.

Top tier Free agents want to join teams with high upside and future all stars (like Bledsoe, Stephenson, parsons) or another prime Allstar. We didn't get that this offseason. We did get Randle, but he's a tweener who dropped to the 7th pick for a reason. He still needs a jumper and better defensive awareness.

In more ways then one we are just treading water. That's why we didn't "overpay" the second tier free agents this summer. I just hope a wave eventually pushes us forward. But just like going into this offseason, there are no guarantees that will happen. In fact the more seasons we finish outside the playoffs, the less likely we are to nab a top tier FA (who wants to win) moving forward.

Here's reality. We had a shot at Melo. Just didn't land him.

And the the question that needs to be asked is why? End of the day. Phil Jackson. Not getting the figurehead to show everyone what direction you're headed toward doomed the potential of the offseason. If your goal was getting Melo and team him up with Pau (reduced pay), Kobe, Nash, Phil's presence would go a long way to accomplishing that.

If it wasn't phil, you still needed another guru to be on the front line.

Side note. Someone said Lakers should get an "A" for drafting Randle, who by the way might of been #2 early, but his stock fell tremendously. Where we got him was a stroke of luck and some shaky drafting ahead of us.
It came down to Vonleh vs Randle. Randle IMO is easily a better prospect. Shouldn't get an "A" for the obvious choice. If anything, they get a D for failing to secure the highest draft position - and your chance at Exum. Time will tell but I say Exum will get to the All-star game first.

For the record, Randle is a "tweener" because he has the ability and talent to play SF and PF, not because of his size. Only on LG is 6-9 undersized for a PF.

personally, I don't consider Randle a Tweener. He's more like a Milsapp, Haslem, even Boozer etc.. undersized PF. Because no one would consider Milly or Has a SF. Since Randle has the quicks to guard SF, he's more a versatile PF than a tweener. Ability.

I think people reserve that "tween" label for guys like Beasely, Derek Williams who both aren't mentally/physically adept at handling the PF position while not having the footwork to guard the 3. Inability.

That said, we don't know how Randle will handle the likes of a Griffin or Aldridge. He's still young and changes in his body could affect his final position.

Only Randle is a full inch taller than Milsapp and Haslem.
