So I know the difference between real imax and "fake" imax in terms of screen size, but I don't know the difference between using traditional 70mm film versus a digital projector. i would assume that the digital projector will be better quality??

i am asking bc i am trying to purchase tickets to interstellar, and there are only 2 "True" IMAX locations in the bay area. (San Jose hackworth dome and the AMC metreon in SF). I read online that the SF location switched from 70mm to digital projection, so i was wondering if that is a bad thing??

True film projection will always be better quality. With digital you will always be able to determine the pixels of the video (1920x1080, 4096 x 2160, etc), whereas with film there is still no true answer (it is beyond 8k). I manage a theater and I can say that digital projection has gotten really good. Most people won't be able to tell the difference between the two (35mm vs digital). If it's true 70mm projection (that's at least 8k resolution), I think it would be worth seeking out.

Go to the real IMAX with the giant screen. You won't regret it....Digital IMAX isn't much of an upgrade from regular screens.

The gap between film and digital projection is closing with the introduction of laser projectors.

so basically, the AMC Metreon in SF has one of the huge screens and it used to have 70mm, but now it uses digital projection....so what i am asking is, is it even worth going to this huge screen imax when this theatre uses digital projection?

Go find a real IMAX theatre with 70mm. I wouldn't waste my time if they converted over already. If they have that big screen and don't use the film that was intended for it then its a waste.

Sucks but I see that they are valuing max profit over quality.

Nothing wrong with making money. Real IMAX was always a niche audience of hardcore movie buffs. That being said, if you had a choice between watching a movie with scenes shot on 70mm, its hard to go back watching it in a regular theatre when those scenes have been cropped off.

Yep. It's sad about the differences really.
