Seattle TV gaffe gives touchdown record to wrong Payton

Gary Payton has had a more spectacular and underrated career than any of us imagined — arguably the Jim Thorpe of his day. That is, if you believe one Seattle newscast (and clearly, you shouldn't).

Think about it: basketball Hall of Famer, NBA champion, Defensive Player of the Year, nine-time All-Star, one of the great point guards of all time, legendary nickname (The Glove) ... and more touchdown passes than anyone in NFL history, even Brett Favre. And, it appears, Peyton Manning.

That's right. BREAKING NEWS on KOMO-TV, Seattle on Sunday night:

Payton (with an A, and from a different sport, among other dissimilarities) clearly wasted little time posting it to his Instagram and Twitter accounts. Good thing he did, too; otherwise, many would have taken it as an internet hoax, a clever Photoshop or some other technological fakery.

Instead, it was just your run-of-the-mill newsroom deadline goof, in the city where he's the Payton who immediately comes to the minds of still-suffering Sonics lovers, not some quarterback who took a beating by the local NFL franchise in last year's Super Bowl.

To be fair, though, both Payton and Peyton have just one ring and probably should have more.
