Has anyone else seen it? It's about a student jazz drummer(Miles Teller) wanting to become an all time great and his instructor(JK Simmons) brutally trying to get him to reach him his potential. The back and forth between these two is intense because you can practically feel the passion each of them have.
Definitely my sleeper pick of the year, maybe my favorite movie of 2014.
I've read the reviews and want to see it. Miles Teller is a great actor. His role in "The Spectacular Now" was borderline Oscar worthy, imo, and this one looks even better.

He was great in TSN but he definitely found a new gear for this one. I think the fact that he was actually a drummer in real life helped him get into the role.
Wow, that's great. And there is a biopic of Miles with Don Cheadle as Miles in the works too. Great times. _________________ “It took many years of vomiting up all the filth I’d been taught about myself, and half-believed, before I was able to walk on the earth as though I had a right to be here.”

Looks intense. Makes me think that's what Kobe would be like if he was a conductor. lol
That's actually a great comparison. Two guys who put greatness above anything else, especially hurt feelings.
I love that kind of leadership. Some of my best personal growth has come under bosses who were meaner than mean, but did so because they truly believed that they could push you to be better.
I knew nothing about this movie but a friend of mine wanted to check it out. I used to play drums and I like jazz so I thought what the heck.
We drive out to the Landmark Theater by Pico BLVD, get to our seats, and before the movie starts, J.K. Simmons comes out and talks to the audience Way cool. Didn't know this was the premiere (this was a couple weeks ago).
I guess we just had missed the previous screening which had a Q&A session with some of the cast and crew. Simmons decided to stick around for the next showing, just to say thanks to the next audience. Nice dude.
I liked the film, although as a former drummer, playing with tension is the worst way to speed up (you have to relax to go faster), you can't force it or you'll get major tendon/nerve damage. Love the music in the film, I might buy the soundtrack.
I also didn't know J.K. Simmons has formal music training. I think he has a degree in music. Here's a good interview with him about the movie and his training:
