Actress Elizabeth Pena, who recently completed work on El Rey Network's Matador, has died. She was 55.

Her nephew, Latino Review writer Mario-Francisco Robles, shared the news in an obituary on the site. He said Pena died Oct. 14 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

In John Sayles’ Lone Star (1996), Pena was memorable as the history teacher who rekindles a teenage love affair with Sheriff Sam Deeds (Chris Cooper). She recently guest-starred in a pair of Modern Family episodes as the mother of Sofia Vergara’s character, Gloria.

Other credits include The Incredibles (2004) and Rush Hour (1998).

Wow, I watch Matador. That's crazy. I remember thinking while watching it, is that really Carter's female cop friend from Rush Hour? Boy has she aged. I remember thinking how hot she was back then. She was such a knockout in that movie.

RIP.

I gotta look Elizabeth up. I wanna fall for her too. I wanna know what love is.

Jan Hooks died earlier this week, only 57. They didn't disclose the illness (it's our RIGHT to know, ya know). She was a funny one. Her and Nora Dunn were better at the SNL comedy style than the broads/dames from the supposed SNL feminine revolution (Fey, Poehler).

Phil 'n Jan were the top M/F SNLers of their era. RIP.

You never really knew her name but you knew her face because she appeared on something you watched one way or another. She was recently Gloria's mother on Modern Family

Elizabeth Peña Died From Complications Due to Alcohol Abuse:

Elizabeth Peña, the “Jacob’s Ladder” and “La Bamba” actress who died Oct. 14 at the age of 55, died due to complications from alcohol abuse, according to a new report from TMZ.

Per the report, her death certificate reads that her passing was the cause of cirrhosis of the liver due to alcohol abuse. Gastrointestinal bleeding hours before her death caused her heart to stop.

The actress reportedly suffered from the disease for months, but it became more severe leading up to her death.

Peña was also known for roles in “Rush Hour,” “Blue Steel” and “Batteries Not Included,” along with a recurring guest role on “Modern Family.” She also recently wrapped work on the first season of El Rey Network’s “Matador.”
