Agreed. What seemed to click was that winning a game will take a collective effort, and can't be forced onto just Kobe's back. There were multiple points of attack yesterday and that is a great thing to see. Very balanced box score, lots of guys touching the ball which in turn usually increases defensive effort.

Thanks. Probably not the only one in this. I was rushing to get this out after starting the game a couple hours late.

Thanks DB.

Buzz Kill Alert: While our defense was slightly better, I thought the Hornets were just going through the motions last night on offense. The Lakers packed the paint and the Hornets couldn't take advantage from the perimeter as they are one of the worst three point shooting teams in the league.

I saw some better efforts. Yes, it's good that they weren't a three shooting opponent, but it did look like there was certainly more of emphasis to get stops in this game by a few players. Still some fundamental issues.

Nice win. But how much was it our defense and how much was it just the hornets being bad

Lin has had three consecutive solid games at Staples Center, with 18 points against Phoenix and 17 against the Clippers and now 21 against the Hornets.

"It's a matter of keeping the aggression high," he said. "I was going to come out guns blazing.

That is nice to hear. Just carry enough weapons, Lin. But again, it takes his teammates willing to play team ball to help him to be effective. And that involves the bigs willing to step up to do some high picks, to roll or to cut, and it also requires Kobe to play more team ball than isolation. His isos lost us 5 games. It is time for him to buy into the Spurs' way, team ball.

If you watch Parker of the Spurs, Curry of the Warrios, or for that matter any guards known for attacking the rim, they have their bigs helping to set picks and screens non-stop all game. It is the coach's job to design set plays to initiate Lin's aggressive attacks. If Lin has to call his bigs to come out for pick, if the bigs continue to jam the paint themselves, causing Lin to stomp his feet in frustration , then Lin's attacks can turn into turnovers unless there is a spot up 3 pt specialist for him to dish out if the lane is not open for attack. Without these, Lin tends to just defer to Kobe and let the legend finish the play, and that is basically his reality in the 1st 5 games.

Very, very poor D (among the league worst) caused the Lakers to lose 5 games.

Agree. Kobe might need to balance more his effort on defense and offense so that he has more energy on defense... I am less worried about his isos unless it hurts his defense... Our team defense has been terrible in the first 5 games.

Regarding Lin and Boozer, I am not worried about their offense. They will figure it out. But their P&R defense really needs improvement: when Boozer's man set a pick, Lin and Boozer had not been on the same page in terms of how to defend it.

Think I already commented on how the D was the bigger issue in quite a few DB's TnR threads. It was fun watching some actual D being played.

It all begins at the top. Kobe and Scott have to prioritize and in Kobe's case actually go out and do it - defense. When Kobe locks in or brings that intensity Lakers are much better for it.

O will be fine. We won't be a power house but we'll be solid on most nights. What we need is a defensive captain and a team that rotates. Sure other than Ed Davis we don't have much inside but we have team speed in certain lineups and length.

This game shows this team can be a competitive .500 ball club if they play defense. It's the way you bring in a culture moving forward. Before Miami trio was formed they already had that culture established with Spo/Riley in Miami. You see how in CLE it isn't and you won't see that D from them.

I won't get my hopes up - but last night was the sort of brand of basketball I thought the Lakers were bringing in with Scott/Kobe pairing. Here's to more nights where we get this effort. Win or lose I want to see heart and effort on D. If we are to lose a lottery pick to PHX this year and now with Randle's development out of the window - at the very least establish a culture moving forward. Playing like last night on D should be a expectation not a surprise.

While that first win was a load off our minds, a more significant event will likely occur on Tuesday night at Memphis where even the Lin haters will have to give him some props for leading the team on the road to a 20+ point victory. I predict Lin will have at least 27 points, 8 assists and no more than 3 turnovers. Kobe wants to win and taking fewer bad shots and passing to the open man will get this team back on track. Over 500 by Thanksgiving is my expectation.
