There are gangbangers younger than that who shoot people...

Is it possible he didn't know any English? He was supposedly instructed to raise his arms? Maybe he pulled the gun to drop it on the ground but was shot first?

What would be the best way for an officer to handle a youth/teen with what appears to be a gun?

The person who called 911 explained that it was a child and that the gun was probably fake.

The video shows the officer open fire literally within 2 seconds of arriving on scene before his partner is even out the door. They pulled up just feet away from the kid was alone in the park at that point.

It's pretty clear that wasn't the right way.

Exactly. If they were responding to a call about a kid with a guy, then why on earth did they pull their car up immediately in front of the possible armed suspect? Makes no sense. Also, the police chief (or whoever was speaking) stated in the first press conference that the officers responded to the call, approached the boy, and asked him to put his hands up and "drop the weapon". He then said the boy reached into his waistband and pulled the gun on them. The video clearly shows none of that happening.

The officer should have been put in handcuffs by his partner and put in a holding cell immediately.

Although I disagree with all the critics who say police should be able to distinguish fake guns from real ones, I have to agree the police response was way too aggressive in this case. If they assumed the gun was real, and they should, they basically put themselves in a position of shoot or be shot. There didn't appear to be anyone in the immediate area who was in danger at the time they pulled up that would justify rolling up on him with guns drawn.

Both the policeman and the incompetent dispatcher should pay a heavy price on this one.Them and their superiors.

Driving right up next to someone supposedly holding a gun is a very aggressive move and escalates the situation, it was inevitable someone was going to get shot when that happened.

This should get interesting... Wonder if Lebron will be leading protests if the Grand Jury decides not to indict?

Quote:
Surveillance video, which the police released, shows Tamir was shot within seconds of a patrol car stopping near him. A graphic video of the encounter can be seen here.

Jeff Follmer, president of the Cleveland Police Patrolman's Association, said today that the officers involved in the fatal shooting were not informed by the dispatcher that the suspect's gun might be a toy or he a child.

Tamir's family last week filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city of Cleveland and the police department.

A grand jury will now consider whether to bring charges against the officer.

Today's development comes a week after the U.S. Justice Department found that Cleveland police have "engaged in a pattern and practice of using excessive force because of inadequate training and a lack of accountability." But Mayor Frank Jackson said Thursday that while there are problems, they aren't systemic.

Quote:
As Tamir Rice's 14-year-old sister rushed to her brother's side upon learning he'd been shot, police officers "tackled" her, handcuffed her and placed her in a squad car with the Cleveland officer who shot Tamir, her mother and a Rice family attorney told reporters Monday.

The mother, Samaria Rice, was threatened with arrest herself as she "went charging and yelling at police" because they wouldn't let her run to her son's aid, she said.

Speaking at a Baptist church in Cleveland, Rice recalled how a seemingly normal November 22 morphed into tragedy as two Cleveland police officers pulled up to her son outside a recreation center across the street from her home. Within two seconds of exiting the police car, Officer Timothy Loehmann gunned down Tamir, 12. The boy died the next day.
