What? The Lakers contacted Clark, he did have the chance to decide. He simply chose China over the Lakers. What you said only makes sense if they made a fake offer to Earl.

We did, and we let it expire.

The Lakers were granted a ROSTER exception? I'm not talking about the DPEs for Randle and Nash. Those only help with salary cap, not roster spots

I believe they had it for 2 days and let it expire, as mentioned above.

It's a leverage to get the Lakers to act quickly and sign him.

And they can still reapply for it if needed.

Jim needs to get involved in the FA signing process, his charisma and charm should be able to seal the deal and get us some talent. Where is Jim when you need him.

If the Lakers were ever serious about signing him, this smacks all to similar to people using LA as leverage to make more money. These people we fans just brush off, but I question the character of guy who was a nobody, used us to make a lot of money, epically fails, then his name comes up again with us and it's another money grab. Shady, very shady. Not Easy Earl... Sleazy Earl is more like it if he rejects us for China.

Jim Buss recently bought 3 multi mil dollar properties, sure Jim earned the money fair and square, and you think Earl Clark wanting to make what the market will tolerate is somehow wrong.

He was always trash. It was hilarious how everyone was outraged at us not giving him the same contract he got in Cleveland. Either way If I was him I'd take the money. He sucks and to blow a chance at big money is stupid.

Why sign him to help this team win? We're not making the playoffs anyways no need to add cost to the team already not making the playoffs and worst possibly lose our 5th pick. Its a sound business move not to sign him.

This.

He was doing very well by d-league standards and in his last game 22pts, 6 blocks, it was consistent and attractive enough for a team to sign him. Since the Lakers are going all out for the pick, there's no reason to spend the cash.

Besides, Earl Clark will be back in the NBA or another league by March, so this makes sense for both parties involved.

Good for him actually. He should live his life. Get more money, live cheaper, and live in China as well. Shanghai is as an awesome city if he gets to play there. Regardless of being an 'NBA success' or not, basketball has brought his life this far that he can get paid to play there. That's still an amazing thing for a guy from Plainfield NJ.

Lakers got the hardship exception, but where do you get that it expired?
Doesn't it expire only when one of the injured players returns?

It's not so much "doesn't want to play for the Lakers".

It's that he's taking guaranteed multi million dollar deal in China as vs 500k non guaranteed on the Lakers.

Not a hard decision.
