What will the ramifications of the Cuban embargo be if it's lifted?

IMM there will be a boost of the Cuban economy and allow Cuban Americans the freedom to travel "home" to visit family and friends without fear.

I don't know, other than sugar and tabacco, what Cuba has to offer as far as exports.

Tourism.
Loads of vintage Chevys.

I use to drink rum in my navy days. I don't drink it anymore. It still makes me crazy.

Since US-Russian relations went south, Russians have been trying to cozy up with the Cuban government to re-open some Cold War era bases....I'm guessing thats on hold now, if Cuba is going to normalize relations. Just another piece of the chess puzzle in world politics. Instead of Cuba going back to the Russian sphere of influence they are going to be in the USA's....

So TARP is almost coming to close...

Bank Bailouts Approach a Final Reckoning

WASHINGTON—The U.S. government closed a chapter in financial-crisis history Friday when it sold its remaining shares of Ally Financial Inc. and shuttered its auto-bailout program, ending the last major pieces of a $426 billion rescue package that saved a swath of U.S. companies but never won public support.

The Treasury Department said the 2008 Troubled Asset Relief Program has netted a small profit, returning $441.7 billion on the $426.4 billion invested

The Treasury’s financial prowess has also been questioned, along with whether it demanded enough from the companies taking billions of taxpayer dollars. In February 2009, a congressional oversight panel reviewed the top 10 TARP transactions by value, not including the Ally bailout, and found, “every time Treasury spent $100, it took back assets that were worth, on average, $66,” meaning taxpayers weren’t adequately compensated for the risk they were taking.

“As a way to stop a panic, [TARP] was absolutely needed and basically successful,” said Damon Silvers, director of policy for the AFL-CIO federation of labor unions and a former member of the oversight panel. “As a financial transaction, the public did not get its money’s worth.”

Small return is better than a loss.

US, NATO mark end of 13-year war in Afghanistan

The President has kept another promise, ends the war in Afghanistan. The war is still raging but Americans only have support duties.

So Chuck Todd, the new host of Meet the Press, has finally admitted that he really can't do his job because it'll endanger his access. In other words, if you're tough, no one will come to your show. Thus, each Sunday, the various shows feature the same damn senators, communication directors, and party chairmen, while people like Todd and Stephanopolous (sp?) are making millions pretending to be journalists. This is really, really sad.

So am I the only person bothered by the fact that the incoming majority whip admits giving speeches to an assembly of white supremecists?

Conservatives deny there is any, or certainly hardly any, racism in their party, and some even claim there is more in the Democratic Party.

Liberals seem to think the Republican Party is far more racist than they admit or demonstrate in a public setting.

So, when this occurred, the conservatives just said it was a scheduling mistake, and continued to believe what they may, and liberals leapt to a the conclusion that the man was a racist in hiding, continuing to believe what they may.

But, without hearing the speech, how can either side make a real judgement?

This smacks of "Obama paling around with terrorists"--blaming him for an occasion when Ayers hosted a fundraiser or some political gathering, and happened to be on the same board as Obama--as though Obama was buds with not only one terrorist, but many.

The conservatives would change "Bush" to "Clinton" in your post. Hopefully, they wouldn't actually use "stunted" as a slur (at least in public).

Same old GOP, same old problem. The energy in the party comes from the far right, but the viable candidates come from the establishment. Personally, I'm pulling for a Ted Cruz candidacy. I want to see all the Tea Partiers explain why it's okay that Cruz was born in Canada. It'll be fun.

I'd like to see that so that the GOP will finally understand that nominating someone from the far right (of course, Cruz does a good job acting like he's a passionate Tea Partier) will result in a Democratic landslide. And it doesn't have to be Cruz, it could be Huckabee or any crazy. One of the things that bothers me about the GOP is the myth they're spreading among themselves, at least the more conservative Republicans, that the reason McCain, Romney, and the first Bush all lost was because they "weren't conservative enough," as opposed to them being bad candidates. Of course, they conveniently designate GW Bush as a traditional conservative, even though he did his best to emphasize that he was compassionate. Maybe losing in a catastrophic way, ala Goldwater, will result in a collective realization among the party that they need to be more moderate, and dismiss the crazies on the far right for the crazies they are.

The unfortunate reality is that it would just reinforce the belief among the core of the GOP that the rest of us are crazy socialists. They would dig in even more, and you would hear more talk about secession.

You're probably right about the far-right digging in. But that could lead to a third party, I hope. The establishment (like Jeb Bush) recognize certain demographic realities. They will never win a presidential election if they continue this way. So I still have some hope that moderation will be the outcome in the long-term.
