Now that he's moved I to the discussion as a potential top 5 pick I figured it's time to get everyone's thoughts on him. He's a true freshman combo guard that can really light it up from the outside. He's currently shooting 44% from 3 point land with an effortless stroke. He has a scorers mentality and is a volume shooter but he can get it going in a hurry.

He's drawn comparisons to ginobli/harden/Brandon Roy/curry

Personally, Im not really sure how I feel about him yet. He's not exactly a freak athlete and he's only 175 pounds although clearly not a pg.

I guess I wouldn't mind if the lakers drafted him but is he worth picking over players like towns, mudiay,Johnson, Winslow, henzonja or WCS ?

What do you guys think?

Loved his Brown Sugar album, less enthused about the Voodoo one. Haven't heard his latest one though.

he needs to raise that TS% to 60+ before being harden/curry/ginobili-tier but i like what i've seen from him. would take him over mudiay in a heartbeat. i would take most players over mudiay in a heartbeat tho

i think his style of play is drawing these comparisons. combo guard that can handle and pass and shoot the ball lights out.

I gotta admit the idea of two lefties leading the lakers into the future is intriguing. Randle/Russell pick and roll could be a handful for opposing teams.

He actually fits pretty well although very unorthodox.

Russell/randle pnR

Clarkson/Russell back court

Makes too much sense

Watching this game in YouTube and he's basically the point guard out there most of the time. He's not playing like the chucker I imagined. He's running the offense and setting his team mates up for easy looks while scoring in what the defense gives him.

I'm not using a top 5 pick on Kent Bazemore.

He does resemble Kent in some ways...I still think he's going to be good.

I don't see Bazemore in him at all. Bazemore played PG with a longer wingspan and was able to get to the rack quicker with his long strides and reach.

Russell, on the other hand, has NBA level court awareness. He's proof that a you don't need a ball-dominant SG to be a playmaker.

He's able to get away with non-elite ball-handling with footwork, being left-handed, and basic hesitation moves. He does a great job of sealing off his defender once he gets ahead of the defender, but forces off-balance shots in no man's land when he does.

He's not Ginobili. He doesn't have that kind of footwork and first step.

He's not Harden. His IQ is MUCH more natural in a half-court set. Better shot selection in terms of context of the offense instead of forcing up absolute garbage.

He's not Curry. Not even close.

He's the closest to Brandon Roy. Roy was really able to explode at the hoop near rim level, and his athleticism was always known for being "deceptive." But, what he got his jumpshot going along with his court vision, he was tough to stop.

One of my concerns is the half set-shot he takes from the three-point line.

Second concern is defensive effort, but I think that's just because he's young.

Third concern is finishing over length. That can improve, but it's not easy. We haven't really seen him explode at the hoop.

i didn't really like him very much as a prospect at first but I've changed my stance on him.

He's a shooter
He has great poise for a player his age
Makes some very impressive passes but he's not trying to be flashy. He makes the smart play.
Can score within the context of the offense but can also create for himself and others

I wouldn't be unhappy with him if the lakers drafted him but I've got my eyes on stanimal. Even though his build is more suited for the football field I think he's going to be an impressive pro because of his size and strength. Mandle + stanimal = bash bros. We could literally just wear teams down over the course of a game and make them really not want to play us lol

I wouldn't draft him over Okafor, Towns, or Johnson but he's in the consideration for the 4th or 5th spot. WCS, Turner, Russell, and Winslow are my next 4 prospects. Sometimes, Winslow looks like a top 3 pick and so does WCS. The order changes week to week with me.

Sooooo... He looked GREAT tonight. That was the first I've seen of him outside of highlight videos and such. I was extremely impressed. If he keeps playing like this he could be a top 3 consideration

Great game. 33,6,7 no turnovers and 6/11 from 3 that's just insane. possibly his best game. He also scored 32 earlier this season.

He made a play vs northwestern where he catches a pass with one hand, palms the ball and holds it there, then makes a sweet bounce pass with some English on it. All with one had! That indicates that he may have pretty large hands. Maybe his ball handing can improve enough to play pg

Love the kid, most nba ready prospect imo, he is skinny, but he is a 6ft 5in pg, and he will put on muscle, he is a true freshmen. Towns and Okafor will take time to develop, I think the Lakers need a new identity shot in the arm. The kid is a natural born leader. He will contribute right away and would be my fave for ROY, especially playing for the Lakers. His athleticism isnt all that, but neither is Chris Paul. To me, he has the attitude of Chris Paul and the game of a young Brandon Roy. You are insane if you don't think he is a baller and worth the number 1 overall pick. This is your chance LA, please dont blow it.

I'm starting to like this kid but I'm not sure he's worth a top 4 pick, Muiday is the wildcard for me because I think the bigs will get drafted before him and Johnson as well. So it could be Muiday versus Russell which one do you pick, tough one.

Considering I wouldn't take Mudiay with a top 5 pick, and we're only going to get a top 5 pick, he's not someone I personally deliberate over.

If we don't get a big like Okafor or Towns he would be a nice consolation prize. He reminds me a bit of Jalen Rose.

no he can, he's a really great passer too. but he needs to get quicker. people jump on me for saying that, but - that's what freshman have to do, develop physically/athletically. Everyone knows Karl Towns has a long ways to go strength wise in his lower body, comparatively, it'll be much easier for Russell to get where he needs to be in the quicks department

It's not easy to get quick.

It is easy to get strength.

There are a few great training systems now a days. I've seen resistance training like Vertimax take a lot of prospects to the next level.
