We need assets!

If we trade Hill we need to get a 1st round pick or at least TWO second rounders.

Trade Hill and Johnson to Portland for Robinson, McCollum, and their 1st. Then flip McCollum to Detroit for Butler and a 2nd.

The Lakers stayed above the Salary Cap for many years and player salaries weren't a huge concern as long as the FO - ownership could tolerate the penalties applicable under the CBA in force at the particular point in time.

The Lakers will likely be cycling above and below the Salary Cap number for the next few seasons and even slightly overpaying players their worth such as Hill and Lin can impair other roster moves.

Getting players to outperform their pay can be huge for teams.

Jimmy Butler is making $2,008,748 this season and that enabled the Bulls to make other roster moves such as sign Pau Gasol.

Carrying Lin and Hill on the payroll next season at salaries in the $8 - 9 million @ year area could hinder the FO from making other roster moves.

If Pau wasn't worth a first round pick, then Hill isn't worth one either.

I get the intrigue. But no more IF HEALTHY players.

Haven't followed draftees this year. Are all the top 5 prospects better than Embiid?

Very different situations with very different contracts.

An overweight Embiid with back, knee, and attitude concerns? Heck yes they are

He was worth more, teams just thought they were doing us a favor taking him. We only got offered Emeka from Phoenix which was an absurd offer, not even a 2nd. And to some extent being the Lakers doesn't help when talking trades cause most teams just want to fleece us. I'm sure if Hill were on any other team we would have gotten a pick out of him already.

Hill for a 1st rd and expiring contract... Lakers could potentially has three 1st rd pick this year... I can't remember last time we have anything like that.
I'm starting to embrace this rebuild from the ground up movement

Not as different as you believe. Pau was an expiring contract and UFA, but then he was an impact player. Is Jordan Hill? No. While Hill might have an option for an additional season, the amount is probably close to his fair market value.

Most of all, teams know the Lakers would probably like to dump a player to get a better draft position, and that weakens the negotiating hand.

i don't think we need to get a first round pick in this year's draft for Hill. I'd be happy with getting a first next year or the year after. it's all about stockpiling assets of some form.

the reality is, we may come into camp next year with 4 rookies (including randle), and getting each one enough playing time will be very difficult.

we might as well spread out our cost controlled players over a handful of years.

gives us more flexibility moving forward

One has a very movable 9 mill contract with a team option next season if he proves his worth. The other had a ridiculous 19 mill contract. Do you know how hard is to match salaries on a 19 mill contract with all expiring? Plus, negotiations last year were also weakened cause teams thought we were penny pinching.

And Jordan Hill not an impact player? Come on, he isn't great but he's very solid. Our players get so much hate, this fanbase is ridiculously bad.

Based on how the Odom trade went for Dallas and the Bynum trade went for Philadelphia, some General Managers might have been reluctant to send much of value for Pau.

Maybe not in a vacuum. But this franchise literally cannot even think of gambling on a player like Embiid. We need to rebuild.

Oh I get it, pull out the hate card when your argument fails. That's pathetic.

Jordan Hill is not an impact player. Period. Pau Gasol was. Most impact players have large contracts. Impact players also get moved in this league. I hope neither of these facts are a revelation. In fact the Lakers nearly moved Pau twice but balked, not because of the contract size, but because they were insisting on a first round pick.

Jordan Hill, sadly, is one alcoholic binge away from trouble...he has nowhere near the stability/production that Pau had hence the lowered value.

I see your point. But we need some role players who can fill the team for the plan of getting a marquee free agent. Lin is expiring, would resign him for steve blake contract 4-5 mil per season, Hill has one year expiring that can net us a decent player in return.

Also, lakers don't have a history of really finding diamonds in the rough in the 2nd round. Last one I can remember is nick van exel and hopefully clarkson can turn into that diamond.

Kenny Carr, Brad Davis and I believe there was one more first rounder they drafted that year. Does anyone remember who that third first rounder was?

Oh yeah, it was Norm Nixon...he was the lowest draft pick of the three.
