We're talking background and/or mood music created for the film itself. This could include lyrical songs also made for radio as long as they were created for the film as a theme(s). The songs in Grease 1, for example.

Your opinion of some of the best and/or your faves.

------
Some of my faves:

American Beauty - Thomas Newman. This guy has done a load of music for films, including Shawshank and Scent of a Woman. None of his other works really stand out to me. The 3-4 different tunes he created made my heart cave in. Liked the separate tunes instead of going the route of making a single long track which is broken up into pieces for different parts of the film. You have no idea what I'm talking about, I'm sure, but don't worry. You will someday.

E.T. - John Williams. Movie score royalty. Jaws, Superman, Schindler, Home Alone. Composer in his own right.

Poltergeist - Jerry Goldsmith - Some people think this was also Williams. Interesting melodic start to the movie.

Shining - Wendy Carlos / Rachel Elkind. Opening operatic piece wasn't theirs, but it's very memorable. Maze scene probably the best example of their work.

Psycho - Bernard Herrmann - Hitchcock's favorite score. Practically a character in the film.

Predator 1/2 - Alan Silvestri - Recently saw a program about black holes that used a re-worked version of the theme. Another theme song that makes it hard to imagine the movie w/o it. Character in and of itself.

Anything John Willaims of course, just for sheer body of work.

But Thomas Newman's work is amazing.

That said I think Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross's work on Social Network was stellar and so different from what we are used to.

And, Henry Mancini's Pink Panther work really has a place in my personal favorites just because the chords became so iconic. There's really nothing outside of Jaws's "duh nuh duh nuh duh nuh" that is so immediately recognizable.

"Time" by Hans Zimmer (from Inception) is my favorite instrumental from a film.

"Hope" by Thomas Newman (from Shawshank Redemption) is also great.

My most favorite film music is the theme music of "3 Idiots".
The music and the film itself are great to me, it's worth watching such an awesome movie.

I'm starting to have a greater appreciation for Howard Shore and Michael Giacchino.

That funky chase scene music in Terminator 1 is along the lines of The Predator score. It sounds dated and porny, but that's the appeal. It should've been used to some extent in every Terminator sequel. I saw T1 while channel surfing the other day and I found out it has reached a 98% rottentomatoes score. There's no way in hell it was that appreciated when it was new. For such a low-budget 1984ish flick, the storyline has reached an odd level of validation as good science fiction as the sequels piled up and as Cameron became more noteworthy.
