With Nash now retiring, Kobe Bryant is officially the only active player remaining from the 1996 NBA draft.

Man. What a class that draft was. And to now be the only one left standing...wonder what that is like for whatever it's worth?

J O'Neal ruled out playing this season, and he's not signed with any team.

It depends on how you look at it, I guess. I have a sense that when we look back on Kobe's career, we'll decide that he was done two years ago. He'll just be the last one to officially retire. I just hope Kobe doesn't go out like Derek Jeter -- constantly getting standing ovations and tributes as everyone tried to ignore the fact that he had become the worst player on the team.

???

Two completely different scenarios.

For me, a player is "done" when they can't do it anymore due to eroding skills/athleticism.

Kobe proved even this season he can still do it with the skills/athleticism he has left. He just can't stay healthy. I'd count that as something different. If Kobe is out there 100% healthy and getting owned by fools, then I'd say he's done

There's so many variables that go into a retirement decision. I fear that, for Kobe, it might end up being similar to Nash. Can't stay healthy or injury-free enough to stay on the court. The motivation to continue to take on that challenge of overcoming injury has got to be waning as well. Hope that Kobe can at least stay injury free next year.

I agree (except for the worst player on the team part). I have held out hope that Kobe could come back and be 75-80% of what he once was, but I have accepted that it will never happen.

Or he could come back next year and play well for his final season, and then retire. Or even be healthy enough to stay on with a lowered salary/role if the team looks very promising (tho' I doubt that personally). We are all speculating at this point.

Kobe already said he doesn't want people giving him a lot of props just because it might be his last season. He can't stop the public giving him ovations but he's said he doesn't want to do the whole retirement tour like Kareem did with opposing teams giving him gifts and tributes. Which is why he may not come out and say next year is his last even if that is what he intends, to prevent that.

You should take a look at the teams metrics with him on/off the court before you decide he's not getting owned. For the season, including all the games he has missed, the team is a +9/100 possessions with him off the court.

Did you also know that despite playing 35 games, he still leads the team in FGA?

He's also 2nd on the team in turnovers to Lin, despite Lin playing almost twice as many games.

What? He's been voted an all-star every season since The Achilles.

Well Kobe's been semi retired for 2 seasons. Or his full time gig unfortunately has been recovering and therapy. That 1996 class was awesome.

I agree. I still could remember that dazzling shot Samaki Walker made from near half court, at the buzzer, to beat the Kings in game 5 of the WCF.

Samaki Walker... wow.

Lebron James is athletically 75-80% of what he once was. Kobe is closer to 10%
