The Final 10… The Nets are fighting to stay out of the lottery, the Lakers fighting to keep their lottery pick. The 107-99 Nets win worked out for both.

The Lakers gave up 40 points in the paint in the first half and trailed by 11 at halftime. They couldn’t recover from a 30-19 first quarter.

“They just got way too many easy points in the paint,” Scott said.

The Lakers pretty much played even with them the rest of the way. They trimmed the lead down to just one hoop in the fourth, but couldn’t get over the hump. A pretty familiar story.

“We don’t have the luxury of getting down 10-12 points and coming back,” Scott said.

He said the final 10 games of the season are the most important.

“If you play like a team instead of an individual, that’s going to sit pretty well with me going into the offseason,” he said.

Clarkson -- -- Lin said he couldn’t go today with the illness, so that led to some extra time for Clarkson and Brown. Perhaps one of the more impressive things about Clarkson’s game is his relative consistency. He’ll have as many dominant games as poor ones. The majority of time, it’s just very strong ball, making an impact. For a rookie, that’s absolutely huge. His game will evolve and get better, but he’s starting a very strong foundation. He led the Lakers in assists with 7, one of the highlights being a lob to Wes on the break. He hit his assortment of pull-up jumpers and had some finishes around the rim. Very well rounded game. He’ll get better defensively as he gets a little stronger and sees that side of things better. The tools are there. He started off on that end a little slow, like everybody else. “Defensively, too many points in the paint,” he said. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 7-14 shooting (1-3 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 7 assists, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He missed a wing jumper up against the shotclock. He sank a jumper off the high screen for the Lakers first score 3 minutes in. He attacked the paint aggressively and scored the lefty layup. He swished a 17-footer straight away after losing his man on a pick. He missed an 18-footer. He scored a layup on the break. He missed a baseline jumper. He scooped up a loose ball, curled into the lane and missed. He pushed up the break and drew FTs. He was picked trying to go behind his back on the dribble. He missed a prayer from three at the buzzer. He had 9 points, 3 assists and 3 boards at the half. Second Half: He swished a three on a swing pass to start the half. He missed a baseline jumper. He missed a three. He was strip-blocked in transition out of bounds. He lobbed to Wes on the break. He curled around a pick and scooped up a layup off the glass before the D could react. He hit Black for the dunk in early offense. Nice challenge at the rim to force a miss. He drew FTs on the break, he made both. He hit Sacre on the rim run for a jumphook. He was tied up trying to make a kickout out of a timeout. He inbounded the ball, attacked on the handoff and scored a layup (just too fast and athletic to keep up with).

Black -- -- Just want to start out with mentioning his sportsmanship. He wacked a Net player pretty good on a challenge, then tracked him down immediately to make sure he was all right. When you hear him speak, you know he carries himself well off court. On court, you sometimes see that expressed in moments like that. He’s a bit of a gentle giant. Although, not too giant when it comes to this sport. Brook Lopez finished with 30 and 11. “It’s hard when we are undersized as we are to play against a guy that good,” Scott said. It’s easy to forget Black is a rookie on that end of the court. He looked a little rookie-ish today. We do have size issues, for sure. Strength, speed and athleticism will be his advantages. He will need to get better at using those versus getting the game taken to him. “He’s a really good player, can’t take anything away from him,” Black said. Hill mentioned you’ve got to hit first. That’s what Black needed to do by using his strengths. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 4-8 shooting to go with 5 boards (2 offensive), 2 assists, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a -13. The Action: He took an outlet in transition, spun and choked the layup badly. He faked a handoff and missed a hook. He backed his man down and scored with his left. He put back in a missed Johnson drive. He was stripped on a drive. Second Half: He attacked across the lane and missed the jumphook. He dunked off the Clarkson feed. He hit a jumphook off the interior feed from Hill.

Kelly -- -- He played both PF and SF today and finished second on the team with 6 assist. He always moves the ball well. What is frustrating is how he’s not a knock down shooter like you want him to be. We ran a play for him late in the game out of a timeout and he had a wide open 15-footer and clanked it. Those are the ones that drive you a little crazy. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-5 shooting (0-2 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 6 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He attacked and was stripped. He slammed off the lob from Sacre out of a timeout (more please). He swished a wing jumper with his foot on the three line. Second Half: He attacked, up-faked and drew FTs on a jumper, he made both. He missed a corner three. He blocked Lopez in the paint. He missed a three. He faked the handoff and bricked the open 15-footer out of a timeout (you’ve got to hit those).

Johnson -- -- Nice activity today. This is the Wes you want to see with regularity. If he could just identify with this guy, it would make a huge difference. It’s not like he was knocking down perimeter shots (in fact, he had a few chucks he shouldn’t have taken). It was more that he imposed his strengths on the game. He had a Marion-like rejection at the rim, popping up in an instant to recover and shotblock on his man. He had a couple dunks in the first half, one on a great hesitation handoff fake that showed a little hoop IQ and savvy. He had a couple more dunks in the second half, a putback jam and a lob dunk on the break. This is Wes at his best. Those are just activity plays, beating guys down the court, hustling at the rim. Unfortunately, these games are too few and far between. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 8-16 shooting (1-4 from three) to go with 5 boards, 3 assists, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 35 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: He moved in off the three line and swished the shorter baseline jumper. He missed a step-through from the elbow. He forced and missed an off-balance jumper from the top of the key. He missed a tip attempt. Up quick to recover and block a layup, very nice. He was blocked on a drive. Great hesitation fake on the handoff to turn the corner and slam when the D froze. He airballed a three on the next possession. He attacked baseline and slammed. He crossed over, attacked and missed. Second Half: He up-faked, moved in closer, ball-faked and hit the elbow jumper. He slammed back down a missed shot by Black. He missed a wing jumper. He threw down a lob dunk on the break. He was picked trying to force a drive on the baseline. He attacked baseline and reversed. Lost on D, he gave up a layup. Nice feed to Hill on the two-man sequence for an And-1 layup. He missed a chuck from the top of the key. He couldn’t finish a reverse and his man went by him on the other end for an easy score. He sank an open sideline three. He missed a chuck from three on the final possession.

Ellington -- -- He shelved Chunkington and returned to Ellington in the first half, getting his 8 points on just 4 shots. He still got his shots up, but they seemed a little more letting the game come to him. He had some poor moments, but certainly not the flavor of the previous games. His second half, he made just 2-8 shooting, but good to see the threes dropping at a high rate (3-4 today). The Stats: He scored 13 points on 5-12 shooting (3-4 from three) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 30 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: Horrible pass on the first possession, turnover. He threw another pass away on the two-man game with Kelly, neither was close. He swished a deep three straight away. He sank a long wing jumper. He attacked and missed a running bank at the buzzer. He sank a three off the handoff at the top of the key. He had 8 points on 3-4 shooting. Second Half: Not close on a 17-footer. He attacked and was rejected badly. He missed a corner three. He attacked, spun and hit the 16-footer. He missed a layup. He couldn’t’ finish a drive, but Hill cleaned it up. He sank a wing three.

Hill -- -- He said he wasn’t aware he was playing until last minute. He was battling in the paint more than usual early on (lately, he seems to have made more of an effort there). That resulted in the large rebound numbers, including the 5 offensive boards. That’s the energy that seems to disappear from time to time until he has games off to recharge. Later, he started working out on the perimeter. Scott seemed to want Hill to bring us home as we went to him again and again down the stretch. “It really gave us a chance,” he said of Hill’s game. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 10-17 shooting to go with 16 boards (5 offensive), 1 assist, 1 block, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He dunked off the feed from Brown as they worked the two-man game. He missed a putback attempt. He drew FTs working the post, he made one. He attacked across the lane and hit the short one. He scored a putback off Clarkson’s miss in the paint. He hit a jumphook across the lane on iso. He had 9 points on 4-6 shooting and 9 boards. Second Half: He sank a jumper from the top of the key. He missed a long wing jumper. He took the bounce pass from Wes on the two-man game and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He blocked a shot at the other end. He battled for Ellington’s miss and jammed it back in over the D. He missed a face-up jumper from the baseline. He missed a step-back jumper. He missed a face-up jumper. He bullied his man over and scored a layup to cut it to 3. He iso’d and missed a 20-footer. He missed an elbow jumper next time down. He tried to create for himself but found Black for the shorter shot instead. He sank a 21-footer on a swing pass to cut it to 4 with a minute left.

Brown -- -- With Lin out, we had Brown running as PG for a stretch. In our system, that’s not very hard to do to get us into our common sets. Overall, he was more aggressive. Good game in that regard, but he couldn’t be efficient with it. He was active defensively with the 4 steals and 1 block. The block was especially nice as his man was clearly going at him, trying to impose himself on the rookie and Brown handled himself. These are valuable minutes for him, but there is quite a difference between he and Clarkson in being able to make their games translate at the next level. Clarkson has made the game slow down (as is repeated often), Brown still seems a bit out of his comfort zone where he was in college. It can take time. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-14 shooting (1-5 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 3 assists, 4 steals, 1 block, 2 turnovers and no fouls in 31 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He spotted Hill from and hit him for the dunk instead of taking the jumper. He attacked the paint and missed a forced attempt that looked blocked in the crowd. He missed a wing three. He missed a pull-up from the elbow. He jumped a Net player on help D to knock a ball loose, got the outlet and slammed. He was stripped on a drive. He scored a layup taking an outlet on the break. He drew FTs on another outlet shortly later, he made both. Strong jump-step and he powered in a layup on the drive (more please). He fumbled a push-out away. Second Half: He missed an open three straight away. He missed a runner, forcing it a bit in transition on the next possession. He sliced through the D and missed a layup. He swiped a ball, pushed it up but choked the layup. He popped out and swished a three to cut it to 5. He blocked a shot as his man attempted to impose his will. He missed a drive on the other end, taking contact with no call. He tied up a man on help D. He missed a wing three.

Sacre -- -- Quiet game after coming and making a nice lob pass to Kelly for a slam and then hitting a jumper. Seemed like he was off to a good start, then he kind of faded away. Horry mentioned afterward you have to do things to make guys like Lopez uncomfortable. That’s something Sacre seems to do with some consistency defensively. Probably his best skill (aside from cheering his teammates on). Just too little of everything else and he’s not good enough at even that to make a big impact. The zero rebounds in 20 minutes is par for the course. That drives me a little nuts. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-5 shooting to go with 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 turnover and no fouls in 20 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: Nice lob from the three line to Kelly off the backscreen for the dunk out of a timeout. He sank a baseline turnaround, working the left block. He airballed a face-up jumper. He missed a wing jumper. Second Half: He threw a pass away. Deep position and he hit a jumphook.

Scott -- -- No Lin in this game, so Scott moved Ellington into the starters… The Lakers had three turnovers in less than three minutes to start the game… The Lakers trailed 17-11 when the timeout came with 5:20 left. Lopez had 8 points early… Scott brought in Sacre for Black. Brown in for Clarkson… Hill in for Kelly, Lakers down 7… The Lakers trailed 30-19 after the first quarter… Clarkson in for Ellington to start the second quarter… Some transition scores for the Lakers. They cut the lead to 6 to force a timeout… Kelly back in at SF for Wes… Wes returned at SF and Kelly slid up to PF again… Brown out for Ellington to complete the starters again with 2 minutes left, Lakers down 7… The Lakers trailed 61-50 at the half. The Nets had 40 points in the paint… The coaches wanted a better job stopping dribble penetration and help on the boards… They trimmed the lead down to 4, Wes looking more active than usual… He sat Clarkson for Brown and Kelly for Hill, Lakers down 10… The Lakers trailed 85-74 heading into the fourth… He started the Sacre, Hill, Johnson, Ellington, Brown lineup this time, Clarkson still resting… Clarkson in, Kelly in, Wes out and Ellington out, Lakers down 8 with 9 to go… They cut it to 3, forcing a timeout with under 4 to go. They gave up a huge dunk out of that… A lot of offense run through Hill down the stretch…

Thanks DB.
Clarkson is impressing more and more as the games go on. Hope he works hard in the off-season and comes back even stronger next year.

It may seem strange to say this, but Black has some Al Jefferson in him. If he develops, that's the guy he should strive to become. That's his potential comp, IMO.
