Entertaining Loss… Most Lakers fans will take that at this point of the season.

The Lakers had 9 turnovers in the first quarter that led to 15 points, yet they were tied 30-30. Wayne Ellington scored 15 points to lead all scorers in the first half the Lakers trailed by just 4 at the half. Third quarter? No problem. The Lakers played even, didn’t commit a turnover. The game was within their reach heading into the fourth.

Behind some great fourth quarter play by Lin, the Lakers tied the game up with just a few minutes left to play. This is where you want to be on the road against top teams. Then, Lin and Boozer teamed up for back-to-back turnovers. The Lakers followed that with a shotclock violation out of a timeout, and the Warriors pulled out by 5. In total 4 turnovers in just 1:49 of action.

“You really have to be a lot stronger with the ball and a lot better with the execution. They were able to get into us,” Scott said.

Still, they battled. With Clarkson running the offense, they got the lead down to 3 with the ball and 10.5 left in the game. The Warriors would foul a couple of times rather than give up a three. The Lakers had it within a three to tie it…they just couldn’t get that shot off. That’s all you want on the road against the top teams – a shot at the end. The Lakers fell 108-105.

“Losing is losing. There are no moral victories,” Scott said.

Clarkson -- -- First off, I can’t overstate how important these minutes are for Clarkson. He got to run the show in the final minutes in a hostile environment with the game on the line. He was poised but aggressive. He orchestrated what he wanted and was always in control. He had a key drive a for a layup that he missed where he was about as ticked at the refs as he’s been all season. Asked about it afterward, he didn’t want to comment on it, clearly biting his tongue about the no-call. His teammates wanted him to find them on that, but I don’t have issue with that. Other guys in the league would have gotten the call. Great job by both our PGs tonight. Very impressed with the rookie tonight. “I just got to keep progressing, keep learning,” Clarkson said. Tough match up defensively against MVP candidate Steph Curry. Clarkson played his game and didn’t seem forced into anything he didn’t want. We held Curry in check for 19 points, a bunch of those came on intentional fouls in the final seconds. Curry certainly missed some shots you’d normally expect him to make tonight, but the Lakers battled. The bigs got praise from the guards to night for their help on the screen-rolls with Curry. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 7-13 shooting (1-2 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 3 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a +10. The Action: He his post entry pass was picked off. He scored a layup a few seconds later on a Warrior turnover for the Lakers first score. He sank a wing three in transition. He lost a dribble, dunk the other way. He threw a pass away (should have tried to finish), layup the other way. He had 3 turnovers in the first quarter. He missed a long three straight away. He somehow snagged a pass with his back to the passer that they tried to throw over his head, pushed it out and scored the layup. He missed an off-balance pull-up jumper worried about the defender (don’t take it if you are). He probed and found Black with low position for the easy score. He had 7 points on 3-5 shooting, 2 assists, 2 steals and 3 turnovers. Second Half: The defender sagged off, he attacked and hit the pull-up 17-footer to start he half. Curry took a bad angle expecting a screen, Clarkson attacked the rim and swished the short floater. He missed the FT jumper, followed it up, got his own board and scored the short one. He was blocked on the floater out of the timeout. He short-armed a floater next time down but got it back. He attacked with speed and hit Boozer in the lane for the score. He called for the screen, attacked and hit the elbow pull-up with a minute left to cut it to 3. He attacked in transition, missed the layup and was screaming for the foul (he was ticked about this one). Iso against Curry on the other end and he got a stop with 10.5 seconds left. He drew FTs on the perimeter with 6.3 seconds left down 3, he made both clutch ones.

Hill -- -- He led the Lakers with 5 assists tonight, not the guy you’d normally expect in this category, but good on him. He was in on one of the highlight plays tonight in transition when the ball went to Hill, who instantly went behind his back to Ellington for the three. Very nice. He also went for his 21st double-double of the season. He sank a corner three earlier in this game. Honestly, with the Warriors fouling to close the game, I wouldn’t have minded trying to surprise them with a three from Hill in the corner. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-14 shooting (1-1 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 12 boards, 5 assists, 3 steals, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He was stripped on a bounce pass, layup the other way. He missed a 17-footer up against the shotclock. He swished a corner three on a swing pass from Clarkson (more please). He hit Ellington for a layup, then went behind his back to him in transition for a three. He missed a corner jumper. He swished a Dirk step-back from about 12 feet out. He faced up, attacked down the lane and hit over his man. He deflected a pass but we couldn’t come up with it. Not close on a set shot from just above the FT line. He got tapped on a lefty jumphook against the shotclock. He was called for a charge off ball in transition. He drew FTs pushing the ball up court, he made both. He missed a wing jumper on iso. He had 9 points on 3-8 shooting and 8 boards. Second Half: His man left him and he sank the long baseline jumper. He attacked from the high post and lost it out of bounds. He rushed a short one and missed. He missed a long wing jumper. He attacked baseline, put on the brakes, spun and hit the jumphook. He had Klay on him and hit the jumphook in the lane to tie it up.

Black -- -- Not much going on in from Tarik in this one. He hit the boards and kept balls alive and scratched a few points. He had a rookie moment on D where he didn’t rotate and both Hill and Wes snapped at him for that one. Rare from him. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-3 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 1 assist and 2 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a +10. The Action: He drew FTs on the attack, he made both. Low position and Clarkson found him for the short jumphook. Second Half: He was blocked on a reverse. He was fouled battling on the offensive glass to regain possession. He attacked and airballed a lefty drive just trying to beat the shotclock. No help on D and he gave up an uncontested dunk.

Ellington -- -- “We knew we had to turn it up or we’d come in here and get embarrassed,” Ellington said. He was on fire in the first half, scoring 15 points on 6-8 shooting. “The ball was moving, I was getting open looks,” he said. Unfortunately, he scored just 2 points in the second half, shooting 0-5. He was certainly in the zone, though, early on. He was the only Laker guard not to have a turnover. “We turned the ball over too much,” he said afterward. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 6-13 shooting (3-6 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 steal and no fouls in 30 minutes. +3. The Action: He was blocked on a layup on our first attempt. He let a man fly by and hit a three. He swished a 20-footer on a step-back straight away. He hit a layup over a big in the paint when Hill found him cutting. He hit a sideline three off the behind-the-back pass from Hill in transition. He had 10 points in the first quarter. He sank a 21-footer from the wing off the quick high screen attack. He sank a step-back from the wing three in early offense. He got tapped on a 17-footer. He had 15 points on 6-8 shooting (3-3 from three). Second Half: He swiped a bad perimeter pass. He missed a wing jumper. He missed a 20-footer. He missed a wing three. He missed a wing three. He was fouled with 3.9 seconds left down 3, he made both.

Johnson -- -- He was pushing the ball up court with a few seconds left and the Lakers needing a three. That’s when the Lakers got their final turnover of the game. The ball was knocked off him and we never got a three off despite being down three for several final possessions. Good job by the Warriors in fouling and not giving up the three. Good job with that final timely reach against Wes. Good offensive game from Wes. He bailed out the offense at times with jumpers up against the shotclock. He credited the ball movement, as well, in this one for the key to the good start. “We’ve been talking about that a lot,” he said, mentioning they had 30 assists last time they played the Warriors. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 7-12 shooting (2-2 from three) to go with 5 boards, 4 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 39 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He swiped a pass in transition, it led to a Clarkson three. He scooped up a turnover and pushed it out for a layup. He swished a wing pull-up jumper. He missed a baseline chuck up against the shotclock. He missed a long chuck from just inside the three line (step back, please). He sank a pull-up from 10 feet out in early offense. He hit Brown in stride on the break for the slam. He sank a wing three on the weakside of the horns. He had 9 points on 4-6 shooting. Second Half: He missed a baseline jumper. He sank a three from the top of the arc. He missed a face-up wing jumper. He rushed a jumper with a little more time on the clock then he realized. Then on the other end, he gave up an And-1 three to Curry. He sank a baseline catch-and-shoot up against the shotclock. Horrible pass trying to find a teammate in the lane and it was easily swiped. He sank a long jumper to bail out the offense up against the shotclock. He was stripped with 1.5 seconds left at midcourt, ball game.

Lin -- -- “We were able to come out and throw the first punch,” Lin said, mentioning how the team was in attack mode from the start. He was, for sure. He had a couple of blocks on D in the first half, one was another nice track down of his man and rejection off the backboard. He blocked shots, deflected passes, forced offensive fouls (a clear-out by Curry and a charge to save Boozer). “He was aggressive. He did a good job defensively,” Scott said, but also mentioned the two key turnovers. He got on both his PGs for their turnovers tonight (Lin finished with 5). Asked what turned it around in the third quarter when they had no turnovers, Lin said, “We got yelled at.” Classic. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 3-8 shooting (1-3 from three, 8-10 from the line) to go with 1 board, 4 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 5 turnovers and 4 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He lost the ball on what he thought was foul, hustled back on D and rejected his man off the backboard (so sweet). He hit Hill for the short jumper. He missed a good look at a wing three. He pulled back the dribble to lose his man and hit the 17-footer straight away. His pass was picked off, breakaway for the Warriors. He was block/stripped from behind on a layup. He missed a floater in the lane. He attacked and was tripped for FTs, he made one. His feed to Davis in the lane was picked off. He hit Brown on the break a few seconds later for an And-1. He had 3 points on 1-4 shooting, 3 assists, 2 blocks and 3 turnovers at the half. Second Half: He swished a wing three a few seconds after entering. He swished a long wing jumper off the handoff. He hounded Curry on the perimeter and drew a push-off foul by Curry after Lin poked the ball free, very nice. He missed a step-back wing jumper at the buzzer. Quick attack off a sideline inbounds and he drew FTs, he made both. He missed a three in early offense. He was hit at the FT line for FTs, he made one. Great job stepping in to take a charge on Boozer’s man (as Boozer was nailed to the floor). Quick attack from the wing and he drew FTs again, he made both. He stripped his man from behind. He shoveled a pass to Boozer on the break for the layup. He drew contact on Bogut on the perimeter to draw more FTs, he made both. Turnover trying to connect with Boozer in the lane and then another one on the perimeter on back-to-back possessions.

Boozer -- -- He didn’t score in the first half, going 0-5 with 2 turnovers. He also had early foul trouble and sat. Not a good first half. Second half, he did all his damage and nearly came away with a double-double as Scott let him finish. Six Lakers finished in double digits in this one. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 5-12 shooting to go with 9 boards (5 offensive), 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He lost the handle on a pass and didn’t know where it was as it bounced by his feet. He missed a layup, got it back and threw it away. He attacked, was blocked, got it back and missed the follow-up. He missed a runner down the middle of the lane. He missed an elbow jumper. Second Half: He scored a layup off the nice interior feed from Davis. He drained a baseline jumper. He missed a layup off a nice two-man sequence with Lin. He tipped in a missed a layup by Davis. He was blocked on a layup. He scored a layup on the break with Lin. He flipped in a short one off the drive and dish from Clarkson.

Davis -- -- “I’m not really big on the moral victories,” Davis said. “This is a game we should have won.” He probably could have finished this one. He was the defensive anchor out there with 3 blocks. Scott instead went with Hill down the stretch. Hill was solid for sure and sometimes Ed may be a little light, but the impact defensively was there. Between Hill, Boozer and Davis, the Lakers had 10 assists. Another sweet interior pass in this one from Ed (this one a no-looker around Bogut to Boozer for a layup). He’s really looked in this area the past few weeks. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-2 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 3 assists, 3 blocks, 2 turnovers and no fouls in 18 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He rejected a layup a few seconds after entering. He lost the ball, hustled back, forced a miss, then fouled the putback attempt to save an easy hoop. He blocked his man from behind on a drive to get a shotclock violation. He was stripped in the lane. He drew FTs on a little bit of a forced jumphook from about 8 feet out, he made both. Second Half: He no-looked an interior pass to Boozer for the layup. He swatted Lee at the rim. He attacked right and scored with his left across the lane. He missed a layup, just beating the shotclock, but Boozer tipped it in. He erased a layup by Klay and it led to a Boozer layup in transition.

Brown -- -- A bit of a quiet game, kind of like the preseason, making just a couple of shots. He had his family and friends out there. “I felt I did alright. Every game I’m just trying to show I can be a consistent player,” he said. He needs to let fly a little more. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-4 shooting (0-1 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 1 assist, 1 steal and 2 turnovers in 20 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He slammed on the breakaway when Wes hit him in stride. He stripped a man in transition to get a stop. He attacked and had the ball poked loose, turnover. He missed a wing three, a little forced. He attacked across the lane in transition and score an And-1, he made the FT. Second Half: He hit Boozer for the jumper. He missed a baseline floater off an inbounds.

Kelly -- -- He had his good game for the month in the last one. Kelly saw his shadow, shriveled up, he disappeared, went back into his shell…whatever you want to call it. He was MIA once again. He made just one hoop and was a non-factor once again. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-4 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 2 boards and 2 fouls in 13 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He was stripped and fouled to prevent a hoop. He missed a layup on a two-man sequence out of the corner. Second Half: He missed a three, getting hit with no call. He probed from the wing, used his length and score easily at the rim. He attacked baseline and missed a layup, tricky but should have had it.

Scott -- -- The Lakers led 22-17 when the timeout came midway into the quarter. The pace was quick and the passing by both teams, either hit or miss… He brought in Lin for Clarkson and Boozer for Black… He brought in Brown for Ellington still up 3… They were tied 26-26 when the timeout came with 2:30 left… Davis in for Hill… The Lakers were tied 30-30 after the first quarter, despite a ridiculous 9 Laker turnovers that led to 15 points… He started a Davis, Boozer, Kelly, Brown, Lin lineup to start the second quarter… Three turnovers in the first minute of the second quarter… Boozer picked up three fouls and sat for Wes with 9:28 left, Lakers down by 5. Kelly sliding over to PF… The Lakers trailed by 5 when the timeout came after 4 minutes… He brought in the two Jordans for Lin and Davis with 7 minutes left, Lakers down 7… Black in at PF to return all the starters to the floor, Lakers down 9 with 3:40 left… The Lakers cut it to 2 about a minute and a half later… Ellington on fire… They tied it up on the 9-0 Laker run… The Lakers trailed 58-54 at the half… The Lakers had 14 turnovers… The Lakers were tied 67-67 when the timeout came midway through the quarter… Curry struggling… Down 4 he brought in Lin, Davis and Boozer for Clarkson, Hill and Black… Curry now hot and the Warriors go up by 8 quickly… Brown in for Ellington… The Lakers trailed 82-78 heading into the fourth. Same unit to start the fourth that started the second quarter… They cut it to 2, then gave up a couple of hoops to trail by 6 when the timeout came midway through the quarter… They tied it up with 4:30 left. Hill, Ellington and Wes in for Brown, Davis, and Kelly… A couple of turnovers by Lin trying to work with Boozer and the lead was pushed to 5 with 3:30 left when they called a timeout… He sat Lin for Clarkson out of that. Aside from the 2 turnovers great game by Lin. Shotclock violation for the Lakers out of that timeout… Down 3 with 10.5 left, we called timeout. Scott brought Lin back in for Boozer. Clarkson was fouled for FTs… Down 3 with 4.8 left. Timeout. Ellington fouled with 3.9 seconds. He made both. Lakers down 1 when they fouled with 3.4 left. No timeouts left… Team record for most consecutive games decided by 8 points or less (12 in a row)…

Thanks, DB! Good read as always!

Clarkson is still the lone bright spot of the season. Davis is nice, but Clarkson shines.
I wish the Lakers would have looked at more of the D-Leaguers like Brown. To find that other dimond out there...

Thanks DB.

Yes, the PGs had TOs but they played well. But they also caused TOs with steals and pestering defense. Curry had 7 TOs, looked human. I also looked at Westbrook's stats and he had 7 TOs in around 36 min. Rondo 4 in over 30 minutes. Point: sometimes top players turn the ball over. The perfect game rarely happens. Sometimes I wish Byron would be more supportive, both PGs did really good things out there on the floor.

First off thanks again for the great analysis DB.

Second....what was with those 2 free throws to start the 4th?
I understand the mistake by the scorekeeper but let's say Lin didn't force a turnover by Curry and Curry hits a 3. Would they have removed 3 points and made him shoot the foul shots??

That one was odd. Byron was complaining about it in the post game interview.

So after the Lin turnovers, the Lakers have an entire timeout to draw up something for this key offensive possession.

Out of the timeout they choose to isolate Hill on Bogut, who's only leader in the entire league in DRPM. Bogut denies Hill all the way out to the 3pt line and Clarkson tries to get Hill the ball for so long that that there's only 8 seconds on the shot clock when he reverses it to Wes.

Wes is not really in a position to anything good with the ball, and the ball goes through his hands anyway to Ellington for a shot clock violation.

Tank on!

Randle is going to demand the ball in a lot of these situations next year because he will be able to face up PF's on the perimeter.

s. He was a +10. The Action: He pulled up in transition and missed the 18-footer. Nice two-man game to set up Black for the throwdown. He couldn’t finish on a fumbled pass from Clarkson on the break. He missed a three. His pass was picked off in the paint. He attacked in transition a few seconds later and spun up and in an And-1 layup, he made the FT. He missed a wing three. He took an outlet and pushed it up for the quick score. He turned the corner, attacked and scored the layup.
