Yeah its logical to think he will still be the coach so we could give a major free agent the opportunity to pick his coach. Next season will be a huge free agent class due to a lot of players this offseason signing one year deals and deals with opt outs and free agents this offseason not opting out.

However, next offseason there might not be a coach as good as Thibbs available...so it's definately possible imo.

Thibs with Mussina and Mike Malone.

The Lakers already gave up a solid assistant coach in Quin Snyder. They started overachieving late this season.

Snyder was more player development. Hence, his offensively underacheiving guards are playing well-above average defense and they start winning. It's not all Gobert if the backcourt can barely handle 35%.

Mussina is basically the offensive coordinator.

Thibs is defensive coordinator and disciplinarian.

Works for me. Just, someone draft well so there's crazy depth on the team.

Messina is not leaving the Spurs for a lateral move to be an assistant coach with the Lakers. He would only leave to become a head coach.

Byron certainly will not be the head coach when we are ready to contend again. In my mind, we need one of two types: those that are legitimate difference-makers as tacticians (a guy like Thibs, for example), or those that have the cache to get star players and free agents to want to play here. That could be a guy like Ollie or Calipari or Nash, just spitballing there. I almost prefer the second option, so long as you have qualified assistants that really know the x's and o's of the game. Similar to how Kerr has Alvin Gentry on his staff, or how Doc Rivers had Thibs on his staff with the Celtics, or how Larry Bird had Carlisle on his staff with the Pacers, etc.

I think so too. The Lakers pretty much went all in by hiring one of their own as coach. If it had been an outsider and a guy like Thibodeau became available maybe, but I don't see the team doing one of their own like that.

That said, that list is full of horrible choices then a couple good ones.

Steve Kerr was a smart man refusing the Knicks job to inherit a great Warriors team, now he's got people thinking he is an ideal coach for the modern style of basketball. That's neat.

Kerr actually had an gentlemen's agreement with PJ to coach the Knicks. When the GS came a calling Kerr asked PJ if he would mind if he accepted the GS offer. PJ basically told Kerr do what you want, the rest is history. What a Guy!

Alvin Gentry or Mark Madsen. Gentry cause he has rebuilt the Warriors offense this season with fantastic results. Madsen cause he was coached by Phil, seems a bright guy and knows our players very well, he can grow with Randle and Clarkson

This actually sounds like a really good idea. Nash has helped Clarkson already, he could help the whole team out. This might also help save Byron's career by boosting the offensive numbers thus leading to more victories. Everybody wins in this scenario imo.

Nash had said before that he don't want to coach but with Clarkson's success among other reasons he may feel that coaching could be something that he is destined for. This makes a ton of sense. This is a nice way for the Lakers to tell Byron "your offense sucks" without hurting the man's pride too much because he could be like "I gave Nash the opportunity to start his coaching career under me." The article mentions how much Byron loves Nash.

^ As a die hard Laker fan, this move alone would give me a lot of optimism about our hope for the future. Nash would be a great person to have in the organization and he seems to have a gift for developing players. Lakers could draft another PG too with one of their picks and we could end up with a Phoenix situation with too many good point guards, which is a good problem to have.

I think Jim should coach the team he has assembled, after all he knows how the pieces fit. If you GM a team, or are the vp of the team that makes personal decisions you should be able to coach the team, right. It seems that coaches get fired before GM's, and vp's in charge of personal decisions.
