2017 First Round Draft Choice. What is its status?

There is conflicting information around the web as to what and when the Lakers' owe the Magic now that our first from this year has been deferred. One site has us owing the protected choice in 2017, one in 2018. Other information has it becoming two 2nds because of the NBA rule that a team cannot trade Firsts in two consecutive years (and the terms of the original trade that if not transferred by 2017). Does anyone know for certain?

It becomes two seconds only if we have a top 3 pick in 2016. It is more likely that our 2016 goes to Philly and 2018 will go to Orlando

Theoretically (not gonna happen) if we have top 3 in 2016, then 2017 goes unprotected to Philly and so Orlando cannot get 2018

Don't know the answer... but i'll say this:

This coming year (2016 summer) is likely the last time the Lakers will be in the Lottery (if at all) for a very long time. So, the picks are all "Top 14" protected.

I wonder what happens if NBA gets rid of draft in next CBA before all these picks switch hands

Lakers owe philly the pick in 16 unless top 3. So if philly gets the pick, Orlando gets the 2018 first. If we get the top 3 pick, then philly gets 2017, top five protected iirc. If we get that pick, then Orlando gets the two seconds. Basically, LA would have to hit the lotto pick both of the next two years in order for Orlando to not get a first.

Here's how it works.

The Lakers owe a pick to Philly. It's now top-3 protected in 2016 and 2017, and unprotected in 2018.

The Lakers owe a pick to Orlando, which cannot be conveyed sooner than two years after the Philly pick is conveyed. In addition, it is protected 1-5 in 2018 and unprotected in 2019. In addition, if the Lakers' pick to Philly is not conveyed in 2016 or 2017 (meaning Philly gets it in 2018), then instead of a first round pick, the Lakers send Orlando second round picks in 2017 and 2018.

So here are the scenarios:

Scenario 1: Lakers pick is #4 or later in 2016. This pick goes to Philly, and Orlando is next in line starting in 2018. If the Lakers 2018 pick is #6 or later, then Orlando gets the 2018 pick. If the 2018 pick is #1-5, then the Lakers keep their 2018 pick and Orlando gets their 2019 pick.

Scenario 2: Lakers pick is #1-3 in 2016. Lakers keep their 2016 pick, and everyone waits for 2017. If the Lakers pick is #4 or later in 2017, then Philly gets the Lakers 2017 pick, and Orlando gets the Lakers 2019 pick.

Scenario 3: Lakers pick is #1-3 in both 2016 and 2017. Philly gets the Lakers' 2018 pick, and Orlando gets second round picks in 2017 and 2018.

Those first round picks go. Might as well pay the price for poor
decisions. Nothing to show for it.

But I sure hope the FO learnt a lesson from those mistakes.

Assets are important and not to be thrown away for a tomorrow that never came.
