Interesting... I'd never guess that the 08-09 team was the greatest Laker team ever based on this formula. _________________ Whenever the Lakers benefit all of a sudden rules need to be changed and trades need to be blocked.

They played well together. Of course we'd all look to Kobe-Shaq and the Show Time Lakers as the best. |

When you have as many rings as the Lakers, you know it's a longass season.
Just looked up Spurs, has them at 60-16 when it was lockout 50-16 so may be other errors here in their data.
That team is supposedly their best, lost to OKC 2nd rd. Bull. Fun exercise but doesn't ring true at the high levels. Magic Lakers mid 80s or Shaq Kobe 2001 along with 72 were wmore dominant than Kobe Pau teams. And earlier Duncan teams probably more dominant than 2012 for Spurs. |

It isn't a ranking of the greatest teams, per se, but instead a display of when the ELO rating peaked. In the case of the Spurs, they peaked during the playoffs when their record reached 60-16 for the season. If you look at the graph, the ELO rating nosedives immediately afterward, because they lost.
In the case of the Lakers, you have to remember that ELO considers quality of competition. The West was historically weak in the '80s, but historically strong around '09. The West was dominant during the three peat era, but not like it was a few years later. I expect that this is the driving force behind the results.
It's an interesting conversation piece. It's good to be reminded that the '09 team really was something special, even if most of us wouldn't rank it as the best we ever had. |
