Leading a team to the Finals in 5 years is pretty quick, especially when you came straight out of high school and do it at 23. I didn't say he shouldn't have improved his game. I'm saying it's not surprising that someone who was so dominant off physical stature didn't take the time to improve their game.

The lengths Houston fans go to protect their own is almost admirable. 5 years is quick success?

Name the players in the last 25 years to lead a team to the Finals in their first 5 years. The list won't be very long.

Even if he did accomplish that - not getting to the end being so close should have pushed him to be a better player. However it hasn't. Mind you I also think Dwight simply lacks the talent/brains to be a great scorer. It takes a lot of skill and considerable talent to be a great post player. There haven't been that many.

Ok, let's see:

1) Shaq did it in his 3rd year, swept by Houston.
2) Penny Hardaway did it in his 2nd year, had help from Shaq but he was one of the leaders.
3) Kobe Bryant did it in his 4th year, won NBA title, help from Shaq again.
4) Allen Iverson did it his 5th year, lost to Kobe and Shaq
5) Tim Duncan did it his 1st year, won NBA title
6) Tony Parker did it his 2nd year, won NBA title, help from Tim Duncan.
7) Dwayne Wade did it his 3rd year, won NBA title, help from Shaq again.
8) Lebron James did it his 4th year, lost to Spurs.
9) Kevin Durant did it his 5th year, lost to Mavs.
10) Russell Westbrook did it his 4th year, lost to Mavs

A total of 11 guys have done it in the last 25 years... Good company I suppose...

The bolded players did not lead those teams to the Finals in those seasons.

Westbook - 24/5/5
Penny - 20/7/4
Kobe - 23/6/5

Role players
Plus forget about beating the Blazers without Kobe. He outplayed Shaq in G7 by a mile.

5) Tim Duncan won a title in his 2nd year, not as a rookie.
9 and 10)They lost to the Miami Heat, not the Mavs.

Who said they were role players?

Pau Gasol was not a role player in 09/10. He did not lead LA to titles in those years.

Pau also did not lead the WCF series win with the Finals MVP neutralized like Shaq was by Sabonis and Sheed. G7: 25/11/7/4blk... led the Lakers in all those categories.

Ding's article isn't too flattering.

He's not a rock about whom no one ever has to worry. He needs the compassion other Rockets offered him Tuesday—and whatever guidance McHale can, too. Asked last week if he talks to Howard about keeping his composure, McHale sighed and said, "I have many times, yes."

"I don't think Dwight is going to change his game much," McHale said just before Game 1. "He's in his 10th or 11th year."

Which of the following would you have rather have:

1) $45M tied up for a choker, underachiever, good role player for next 4 years

2) 3 young studs in rookie contracts plus $30M in cap space

Hmm... I wonder how many statistical simulations Morey will run to figure that out. Both teams will win the same amount of rings this year.

He's doing dang good, even if not great great level now. More than I expected when he left which is progress defined. I don't think he has the superstar leader mentality ever but must give him credit for causing problems against good teams.

Still glad he's not our diva problem and I don't see any Laker news about him on or offcourt.

I wasn't sure about our cap space situation. $30M? Didn't know we had that much to spend this summer. Nice!

Did you see Dwight throw the ball back to Harden like it was a hot potato? Dude didn't even think let me try to take it to the rim or make a play.

Dwight Howard is 56-of-137 from the free-throw line this postseason.
Steph Curry is 57-of-134 from three-point territory this postseason.
