This is a difficult time for football, the fans and for FIFA as an organisation. We understand the disappointment that many have expressed and I know that the events of today will impact the way in which many people view us.
As unfortunate as these events are, it should be clear that we welcome the actions and the investigations by the US and Swiss authorities and believe that it will help to reinforce measures that FIFA has already taken to root out any wrongdoing in football.
While there will be many who are frustrated with the pace of change, I would like to stress the actions that we have taken and will continue to take. In fact, today’s action by the Swiss Office of the Attorney General was set in motion when we submitted a dossier to the Swiss authorities late last year.
Let me be clear: such misconduct has no place in football and we will ensure that those who engage in it are put out of the game. Following the events of today, the independent Ethics Committee – which is in the midst of its own proceedings regarding the awarding of the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups - took swift action to provisionally ban those individuals named by the authorities from any football-related activities at the national and international level. These actions are on top of similar steps that FIFA has taken over the past year to exclude any members who violate our own Code of Ethics.
We will continue to work with the relevant authorities and we will work vigorously within FIFA in order to root out any misconduct, to regain your trust and ensure that football worldwide is free from wrongdoing. |

$110 million and all we get some some third rate soccer tournament.... |
3rd to who? o_o
Copa America is the oldest tournament in the world.. I can see putting the Euro Cup ahead of it.. but nothing else to put ahead of it.
And as far as talent goes, south America is plagued with it. |

Oldest doesn't mean more prestigious.
For example, the NCAA NIT tournament is older than the NCAA tournament, yet teams actually want to go to the NCAA Tournament because you are the best college basketball team for that year.
COPA America is more of a regional soccer tournament, while its older than the World Cup, I bet you these nations would rather win the World Cup just because of the competition against the 32 best teams in the world....and also the Confederations Cup while also a much newer tournament, IMO is a better tournament to test how good your soccer team is against the world stage in preparation for the World Cup. |

I'm going to have to disagree.
You can't compare the Copa America to a World Cup.
One is a federation tournament (CONMEBOL) vs the mother of all football tournaments, which is on a different entire global scale.
Copa America should comparable to the African Cup of Nations, Euro Cup, Gold Cup, etc. The 2016 Copa America is scheduled to be the biggest latin American tournament ever, and the first one held outside of south America.
The confed cup is a 8 team tournament a year before the world cup, and while it has grown in prestige it's still not at the level of a Copa America.
In terms of the 'scales', Copa America is only second to the Euro Cup, that's it.. no other similar tournament comes close to those two. |

lakersken80 I think you're using America as a bellwether. It's not a good choice.
Use a global audience. You'll find soccer is by far the more played sport. _________________ Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

I gave two examples soccer tournaments that are much more global than a regional soccer tournament. |

Yep. The Confederations Cup is important only to the countries like the USA, Mexico, etc. that want to make their mark. It's like the Olympics in that sense. When Mexico won the gold, it was a point of national pride, and rightly so. For the superpowers like Italy, Germany, and Argentina, these competitions are more of a nuisance. |

My bad. I was thinking viewing audience compared to American football.

might you be confusing the confed with the Olympics? Mexico won the confed in '99, but did win the Olympic gold in 2012, so i was just wonder if u were referring to the latter. |

Nobody really cares about Olympic soccer....I mean the women's competition is probably more prestigious because they don't really have a league and for them its a bigger deal because its one of the few international tournaments for them. But for the men I believe there is a limit on professionals, so most of the team is composed of amateurs. |

Yes, I was referring to the Olympics. My point is that the Confederations Cup is about at the same level as the Olympics in terms of international importance. Copa America is a bigger deal. |

james rodriguez
david luiz
alexis sanchez
arturo vidal
list goes on.. but those are all elite players in europe right now. |

All good.
Hopefully the Swizz and FBI can put up a good case against him with all the indicted officials.
I'd expect the WC2026 to make its way back to Latin America or to Oceania. |

I also heard both Syria and the North Pole may be in the running as well. The latter is interesting, as I've heard the plan is to hold the tournament in December, and Blatter has apparently enlisted Santa's elves to build all the stadiums, calling in to question whether or not there will be a Christmas that year. |
